This technical paper presents a case study for both industry and academic areas concerning the application of engineering solutions and smart technologies in a complex project aimed to upgrade power flexibility and to achieve total asset integration between a Refinery Plant and a Combined Cycle Power Plant. With the purpose of sharing peculiar factors related to "revamping" project modality, it has been adopted, in this paper, a descriptive approach overlaying the same project management structure actually implemented during the works. At the same time, the most innovative solutions and challenging aspects have been evidenced for all project wbs consisting of: the electrical interconnection between the different High Voltage Substations and Electrical National Grid, the contextual integration of control automation systems and the combustion system upgrade of Gas Turbine including related modifications to balance of plant. In the conclusions main benefits and advantages achieved by the project have been highlighted in a comprehensive overview.

At the 4th Ovarian Cancer Consensus Conference of the Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup (GCIG) held in Vancouver, Canada, in June 2010, representatives of 23 cooperative research groups studying gynecologic cancers gathered to establish international consensus on issues critical to the conduct of large randomized trials. The process focused on 13 predetermined questions. Group A, 1 of the 3 discussion groups, addressed the first 5 questions, examining first-line therapies in newly diagnosed ovarian cancer patients. A1: What are the appropriate end points for different trials (maintenance, upfront chemotherapy trials including molecular drugs)? A2: Are there any subgroups defined by tumor biology who need specific treatment options/trials? A3: Is the 2004 GCIG-recommended standard comparator arm still valid? A4: What is the role of modifying dose, schedule, and delivery of chemotherapy? A5: What role does surgery play today?

The terms somatosensory, tactual and haptic can be considered to be synonymous even though their precise definitions vary slightly. The most common of these terms is haptic, which has its origin in the Greek, meaning lay hold of. The haptic system comprises two subsystems, the tactile and the kinesthetic. The tactile involves the sense of touch and the kinesthetic sense results from limb movement. The tactile sensors are located in the layers of the skin and therefore are frequently referred to as cutaneous sensors, while the kinesthetic sensors are located in the joint capsules as well as the muscles and tendons. While much less is known about the characteristics of these sensors and how they contribute to the total percept of motion, than the vestibular system. They can somewhat be described in engineering terms. The kinesthetic sensors, the muscle spindles and the Golgi tendon organs, provide the required feedback for the adaptive control behavior of the neuromuscular systems of the limbs. This control behavior interacts with the aircraft, or any vehicle, control system and has consequences for the control feel systems in both vehicles and simulators of those vehicles. Also considered is the effect of acceleration on the kinesthetic sensors for example in uncoordinated or high G flight. This paper presents a review of the state of knowledge as well as an engineering characterization of these systems. Mathematical models are included which indicate response of individual components to various inputs. Illustrations and data from the execution of these component models, integrated with more complex models of the human operator, such as the Hess model are also presented. Nomenclature

In this issue of the Policy Review Section, Sue Kidd and Ashok Kumar of the Department of Civic Design, University of Liverpool, examine the speed of plan production in the pre–1986 and post–1986 planning systems in the English metropolitan counties. Abolition of the metropolitan county councils and their associated structure plan process in 1986 was followed by the establishment of a unitary plan-making system in the metropolitan areas, with the new unitary local planning authorities charged with responsibility for producing district-wide unitary development plans combining strategic and local planning concerns. It is a particularly appropriate moment to examine unitary development plan progress in the light of the current review of the structure of local government in the shire counties, which may ultimately lead to a largely unitary local government system and, in turn, the widespread application of the UDP system. In the second contribution to the Policy Review Section, Jamie Peck of the School of Geography, University of Manchester, presents a short polemic on the role of economic forecasting in regional and local economic development. He argues that use of conventional economic forecasting methods over the past decade has reinforced the view that there is “no alternative” to prevailing orthodoxy in economic development practice.
