Abstract I examine the algorithmic storm of digital media wherein the transmission of folklore is disrupted by technology designed for engagement. I consider what happens when the vehicle for folkloric transmission is no longer human-centered but technology- and profit-centered. Finally, I argue there is a great need to expand folklore education to both ensure the growth of the field and to help people navigate the algorithmic storms in which they find themselves.

Avida-ED is a digital evolution software program that allows students to ask questions and test hypotheses related to evolutionary concepts. Our working group explored how to incorporate Avida-ED into undergraduate biology courses.

In order to avoid patient abuse, under normal situations before performing a medical intervention on a patient, a physician must obtain informed consent from that patient, where to give genuine informed consent a patient must be competent, understand her condition, her options and their expected risks and benefits, and must expressly consent to one of those options. However, many patients refrain from the option that their physician believes to be best, and many physicians worry that their patients make irrational healthcare decisions, hindering their ability to provide efficient healthcare for their patients. Some philosophers have proposed a solution to this problem: they advocate that physicians nudge their patients to steer them towards their physician's preferred option. A nudge is any influence designed to predictably alter a person's behavior without limiting their options or giving them reasons to act. Proponents of nudging contend that nudges are consistent with obtaining informed consent. Here I argue that nudging is incompatible with genuine informed consent, as it violates a physician's obligation to tell their patients the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth during adequate disclosure.

The attainment of a formal education is a strong positive social determinant associated with an elevated quality of health.It increases the accessibility to various support systems enabling individuals to proactively engage in preventive health care.A total of 48 human anatomy & physiology students at Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) filled out a public health assessment survey entitled "Healthiest Nation 2030" inquiring if they believed whether negative social determinants demonstrated a relationship to the level of student academic attainment and the quality of health.Data revealed that the majority of the surveyed WCCCD students did believe that negative social determinants adversely affected the level of educational attainment as well as the health status of a community.Their beliefs were compatible with data of previous studies pertaining to this public health matter of concern.

Christopher Loss’s Between Citizens and the State: The Politics of American Higher Education in the 20th Century, winner of the 2013 American Educational Research Association Outstanding Book Award, traces the development of higher education and its eventual arrival at the current business model. In this book, Loss (Vanderbilt University), who has written vigorously about higher education in regards to public policy, convincingly portrays the state and higher education’s “marriage” (and eventual split) over the course of a little more than a century and begins with the educational implications of World War I and the concept in loco parentis. (p. 22). In loco parentis was a commonplace ideology in early 20th higher education because it positioned professors as parents and students as their children; a position that has shaped higher education until World War II. Though this ideology was abandoned, universities and colleges alike still implement orientations and other functions that place the university in the role of the parent. Orientations have been minimized to often only one day affairs, instead of the week long processes that they use to be, and are run by faculty and staff . Likewise, many classes have been implemented to help students adjust to their new environment and way of living

Communication flexibility has long been recognized as an essential component of communication competence. This article reports the development of a communication flexibility scale and corresponding validity and reliability information. The Communication Flexibility Scale demonstrated acceptable levels of reliability; communication flexibility was positively related to social desirability and communication adaptability, yet was not related to rhetorical sensitivity. Discussion focused on future scale research and conceptual definitions of the constructs.
