Condition‐Dependent Female Aggression and Its Effects on Mating Success and Sexual Cannibalism in Jumping Spiders
ABSTRACTPre‐copulatory sexual cannibalism is an extreme form of aggression toward potential mates. In this study, we examined condition‐dependent female aggression and its effects on mating success and frequency of pre‐copulatory sexual cannibalism in the jumping spider Phidippus audax Hentz 1845. We examined two of the leading hypotheses of why sexual cannibalism may occur, (1) female mate choice and (2) adaptive female foraging. We separated 137 adult virgin female P. audax into three feeding treatments: (1) well‐fed spiders, (2) 14‐day food deprived, and (3) 28‐day food deprived. We recorded weight loss (14‐ and 28‐day treatments) and survival rates. We conducted mating trials to measure the proportion of non‐aggressive and aggressive male and female behaviors, male mating success, and pre‐copulatory sexual cannibalism. Females deprived of food had higher weight loss and lower survival rates than well‐fed females. In addition, food deprived female spiders exhibited higher proportions of aggressive behaviors and pre‐copulatory sexual cannibalism, and lower mating success compared to well‐fed spiders. We found that as male size increased females were less likely to cannibalize males, but we found no effect of male body condition on whether a male mated with or was cannibalized by a female. Our results are consistent with the adaptive foraging hypothesis and corroborates prior research on pre‐copulatory sexual cannibalism.

ABSTRACT Recent copyright infringement litigation has revealed ambiguity in the scope of legal protection for musical works. Courts have especially struggled to distinguish between unprotectable, foundational musical ideas and copyrightable expressions of them. This article advocates for increased application of the legal doctrine of scènes à faire—which permits the exclusion of indispensable ideas when proving infringement—to contextualize more acutely similarities identified in a lawsuit according to evolving creative practices and repertories that are essential to genre communities. In so doing, this article furthers methodological discourse in forensic musicology to promote future case outcomes attuned to musical genre practices.

Abstract Here we describe the metagenome composition, community functional annotation, and diversity of prokaryotic microbial species derived from calcareous stromatolite formations discovered in the dry stream bed of the open-canopy, ephemeral San Felipe Creek in the Anza Borrego Desert. In this environment, resident microbes must be able to adapt to the harsh conditions of extreme heat, high UV light, desiccation and fluctuating solubilization/precipitation and hydration/evaporation. Metagenomic analysis revealed a community capable of carrying out complete nitrogen fixation and assimilatory nitrate reduction, forming biofilms and quorum sensing, and potentially forming thick-walled akinetes as desiccation-resistant stages. Nitrogen cycling is likely to play a fundamental role in mediating both the structure of the stromatolite microbial community and the mineral precipitation/dissolution. The viruses present in the stromatolites, particularlyNodulariaandMycobacteriumphages are also likely to impact community population dynamics and activity. Stromatolite community members possess different morphological and physiological strategies to cope with desiccation stress.Metagenomic signatures were found for scytonemin, carotenoids, synthesis of potential microsporine-like amino acids; genes involved in microalgal desiccation tolerance, including those encoding aquaporins, chaperones, antioxidants; and enzymes responsible for the synthesis of trehalose, sucrose, and polyamines. The stromatolite ecosystem provides a diverse array of microniches where different functional guilds can develop complex metabolite exchange with the substrate supporting their life in extreme conditions. Metagenome analyses revealed several genes that might enable a specialized and unique group of endolithic cyanobacteria includingChroococcidiopsis, Hyella, Myxosarcina, andPleurocapsato derive metals and important nutrients from rocks, being potentially destructive for the calcareous formations. Our study revealed environmental adaptations of freshwater microbial communities in desert stream stromatolites which may provide valuable insights into Precambrian paleoenvironments, which are little known.

Clinical judgment has been identified as a key component of clinical practice. We sought to measure the elements of clinical judgment in new nurse graduates to identify future educational interventions. Lasater's clinical judgment rubric was adapted and distributed to nurse preceptors at two significant health care systems in central Illinois. One hundred and six surveys were returned and one hundred and five of those were included in the study. New nurse graduates were found to be the lowest ranking in ability to identify significant data and calm, confident responses. The findings can guide nurse educators to create innovative, targeted educational interventions to improve students' ability to identify important pieces of data and respond to challenging situations in a self-assured manner. Identifying and addressing the gaps to improve students' clinical judgment may facilitate NCLEX success and entry to practice.

Sacred Ground: Higher Education and the Importance of Place
Abstract: The growing emphasis on cyberspace as a primary locus for the teaching and learning efforts of modern colleges and universities belies larger issues of connection, meaning making, and community necessary to human growth and well-being. College and university campuses can be critical loci of such functions if they are understood as sacred places devoted to ideals of growth, development, community, communication, and especially of freedom of inquiry, expression, and conscience. Though the current pandemic has reinforced reliance on online methods of instruction and interaction, the critical longer term needs of individuals and society at large are served by a renewal of the commitment to college and university campuses as places dedicated to the essential ideals of respectful polity, comity, and mutuality.
