Aging is a natural and inevitable biological process characterized by gradual structural, functional, and molecular changes in the human body, with the skin being one of the most visibly affected organs. Anti-aging refers to a broad range of strategies, practices, and interventions aimed at preventing, delaying, or reducing the signs of aging while promoting overall health and quality of life. Skin aging occurs due to the combined effects of intrinsic factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, cellular senescence, telomere shortening, and metabolic decline, along with extrinsic factors including ultraviolet radiation, pollution, smoking, unhealthy diet, and chronic stress. These factors lead to oxidative stress, inflammation, collagen and elastin degradation, impaired cellular repair, and reduced skin hydration. Modern anti-aging approaches integrate dermatology, cosmetology, lifestyle modifications, and medical interventions. Topical anti-aging agents such as retinoids, antioxidants, peptides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and sunscreens play a crucial role in improving collagen synthesis, neutralizing free radicals, enhancing skin hydration, and preventing photoaging. The effectiveness of these agents depends on their physicochemical properties, including solubility, stability, molecular weight, and skin penetration. Lifestyle changes such as balanced nutrition, regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, and sun protection are essential for healthy aging. Medical and cosmetic procedures, including Botox, dermal fillers, laser therapy, and chemical peels, further help manage visible aging signs. Overall, anti-aging strategies aim to promote healthy aging, preserve skin function, and enhance overall well-being rather than simply reversing the aging process.
