Access to athletic trainers (ATs) in high schools is crucial for student-athlete (SA) safety. Although most high schools in the United States have access to athletic training services (ATS), no authors have longitudinally compared ATS trends between public (PUB) and private (PVT) school sectors. To compare ATS trends between PUB and PVT schools from the 2018-2019 through 2022-2023 academic years. Longitudinal cross-sectional study. Online survey. High school responses to the Athletic Training Locations and Services survey from all 50 US states and the District of Columbia were queried from the 2018-2019 to 2022-2023 academic years. Average numbers of SAs (SAs), sports (Sports), full-time ATs (FtATs), part-time ATs (PtATs), and the sum of full-time and part-time ATs (ATs), along with the average weekly contracted hours (CHrs) and actual hours (AHrs) per school, and ratios of SAs : ATs, Sports : ATs, CHrs : SAs, CHrs : Sports, AHrs : SAs, and AHrs : Sports were examined to track ATS trends over 5 years and compare PUB vs PVT schools. Public schools had higher SAs and Sports vs PVT schools (both P < .001). Private schools had higher ATs, CHrs, and AHrs than PUB schools (all P < .050). Ratios of SAs : ATs and Sports : ATs were higher in PUB schools, whereas CHrs : SAs, AHrs : SAs, CHrs : Sports, and AHrs : Sports were higher in PVT schools (all P < .050). From 2018-2019 to 2022-2023, PUB schools increased Sports and Sports : ATs; PVT schools increased SAs, Sports, ATs, and SAs : ATs (all P < .050). Over the years, PUB schools decreased CHrs : Sports and AHrs : Sports; PVT decreased CHrs : SAs, AHrs : SAs, CHrs : Sports, and AHrs : Sports. FtATs increased in both sectors, whereas PtATs decreased in only PVT schools. Overall, ATS were more extensively provided in PVT schools, based on ATs and ATS hours. Both sectors increased FtATs, which is encouraging. However, as SAs and Sports increased, ATS provided per SA and sport declined.

Emergency personnel, including firefighters, play a crucial role in providing emergency care in diverse and challenging environments. With over 1,058,700 active firefighters in the United States, occupational safety assessment is vital due to high injury rates, especially from overexertion. By analyzing muscle activity and video feedback, this study aimed to improve first responders' occupational health and safety during lifting and transferring of patients. This study focused on 37 first responders from the City of Fairfield Fire Department, Ohio. Participants underwent video-assisted feedback sessions aimed at improving body mechanics during sit-to-stand transfers. Surface electromyography measured erector spinae (ES) and gluteus maximus (GM) muscle activation preintervention and post-intervention. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference in ES or GM muscle activation levels post-intervention. However, participants showed improved bilateral muscle activation symmetry, potentially reducing strain during lifting tasks. Video feedback emphasized neutral spine positioning, proximity to patients, and proper hand placement, aligning with ergonomic principles. While statistical significance in muscle activation levels was not achieved, improved symmetry suggests potential benefits in injury prevention. Video feedback, coupled with expert guidance, enhances awareness of ergonomic techniques among first responders, promoting safer work practices.

This paper examines the fixed and growth mindset theories using students from a U.S. university's economics courses. We utilized two groups for this study: one group served as the control and received no growth mindset interventions. In contrast, the other group was subjected to growth mindset interventions. We did not find a significant difference in success rates between the two groups. This finding is inconsistent with previous studies that primarily involved K-12 students as participants. Our results suggest that as individuals gradually enter adulthood, they are more likely to hold fixed mindsets rather than growth mindsets.

Abstract The focus of job satisfaction literature remains on the subordinate even though supervisors are responsible for evaluating employee performance, determining employee pay, raises, promotions, growth opportunities, etc., all of which impact employees’ subsequent performance that contributes (or not) to organizational success. Using a psychological contracts lens, we develop and test theoretical arguments predicting supervisors’ response to contributions is not uniformly positive depending on the type and amount of contribution involved. Across two studies, we ask supervisors to evaluate subordinates’ delivered contributions relative to promised contributions. Our results challenge the assumption that supervisors always desire larger amounts of work from their subordinates; excess contributions were associated with lower supervisors’ satisfaction with subordinates for some types of contributions. The results imply that subordinates’ contributions of work to supervisors may influence supervisors’ satisfaction with subordinates perhaps affecting their performance reviews and career opportunities.

Breast conserving surgery is an excellent option in the treatment of breast cancer. To achieve a good result with this modality, a surgeon needs to identify and excise the tumor with adequate margins. The radiofrequency identification (RFID) technique is a wireless localization technique used for intraoperative breast lesion identification. We assessed the efficacy and outcomes of the RFID technique in breast cancer patients at our institution. This is a single institution, retrospective study (BSMH 22-02X-MWH) of 73 patients. We analyzed the medical records of women with biopsy-proven breast cancer from June 2020 to August 2022; participants received surgical care at Mercy Health West Hospital. Data collected included demographics, clinicopathological characteristics, and surgical procedure. The primary objective was to determine the safety and efficacy of RFID. The secondary objective was to assess the impact of obesity and breast density on the RFID outcomes. A total of 73 female patients met the eligibility criteria with stage I (59%) and grade 1 (51%) breast cancer with mean age of at diagnosis of 66.8 years and mean body mass index of 31.4 kg/m2. Patients had invasive ductal carcinoma (61%), hormonal positive (56%), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (68%) disease. All RFID tags were placed under image guidance with 100% accuracy of placement with no evidence of migration or procedure revision. Ninety percent of patients had free surgical margins and only seven patients needed margin re-excision with successful removal of the lesion and the tag. RFID localization technique is a safe, effective and reliable procedure that results in favorable patient outcomes and quality of life.
