Systems Mapping, Social Innovation and Social-Ecological Transformations Across Scales
This paper clarifies the meaning and role of systems mapping in supporting social innovators as they confront complex societal challenges. While recognized for its capacity to visually represent intricate relationships between interconnected elements, systems mapping remains underutilized in management and organization theory and practice. Moreover, ambiguity in the definitions and uses of systems mapping endures also in other scientific fields – such as ecological economics, innovation studies, and sustainability science. Hence, this paper redefines and highlights the multiple roles of systems mapping in strategizing for social innovation. We distinguish between the meanings of systems mapping as tool, event, and process, and between its roles for making sense of complex issues, for deliberating where and how to address them, and for strategizing novel partnerships that address them. From the literature on participatory social innovation processes and the nexus with visual approaches of representing systems, we therefore shed light on the affordances and limitations of systems mapping in fostering multiple pathways of social-ecological transformation across scales.
Read moreMobile working vs. labour mobility: a conceptual exploration of substitution and urban change
ABSTRACT This paper discusses the impact of remote work on labour mobility and urban development. We argue whether remote work can replace high-skilled migration especially if job opportunities drive migration decisions. Given the characteristics of jobs that are suitable for remote working, along with different cost and types of migration we conclude that remote work is a good substitute for physical migration of high-skilled workers. The analysis highlights that this substitution leads to a relative increase in low-skill migration in urban areas, potentially affect-ing economic and social structures as well as land-use not only in urban areas but also in sub-urban areas. The study emphasizes the need for urban policies to adapt to these changes by promoting inclusive economic development plans and enhancing urban amenities to support a diverse and skilled workforce.
Read moreKnowledge Graphs for Intelligent Multi-Channel Marketing: A Semantic Framework for Retail and Tourism
The rapid growth of digital channels and evolving consumer expectations challenge tourism businesses to deliver personalized, multi-platform marketing experiences. This paper introduces a knowledge graph-driven framework that integrates semantic technologies, linked data, and AI to automate and optimize tourism marketing and service discovery. Unlike prior approaches, the framework enables dynamic composition of personalized travel packages by aggregating heterogeneous datasets from hotels, events, and attractions while maintaining provenance, quality, and interoperability. Leveraging schema.org extensions, semantic validation tools, and AI-enhanced recommendation engines, the system supports real-time, context-aware content delivery across web, mobile, and social media platforms. Pilot deployments in Austrian tourism regions demonstrate measurable improvements in user engagement, click-through rates, and operational efficiency. The study further identifies persistent challenges such as data heterogeneity, annotation quality, and service-level integration, providing actionable insights and a roadmap for scaling AI-assisted, knowledge graph-powered marketing in tourism and other multi-channel service industries.
Read moreExploring Confirmation Bias in Priming Effects: How Design Elements in Product Packaging Shape Brand Perception and Drive Purchase Decisions
This study investigates how belief-consistent packaging design influences consumer behavior through the psychological mechanisms of priming and confirmation bias. Drawing on dual- process theories of cognition, the research develops and empirically tests a structural model linking packaging congruence, priming strength, confirmation bias, brand trust, and purchase intention. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining thematic analysis of semi- structured interviews with a survey of 312 consumers. Quantitative findings from regression and mediation analyses reveal that confirmation bias significantly mediates the relationship between packaging congruence and purchase intention, while brand trust moderates the strength of this effect. The results underscore the role of packaging not merely as a visual identifier, but as a cognitive tool that activates intuitive belief-confirming responses. The proposed model advances current understanding by integrating visual and semantic priming with belief-confirmation processes, offering both theoretical refinement and actionable insights for brand managers. Implications are discussed for designing packaging that resonates with consumer values, enhances trust, and drives purchase behavior.
Read morePatient Perspectives on Immediate Zirconia Implant Therapy: Results from a Long-term Multicenter European Study.
This multicenter study investigated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) following immediate placement of zirconia dental implants. Fifty-four patients from Austria, Spain, and Germany received 272 implants and completed the PROM questionnaires before implantation (T0) and at the time of definitive prosthetic restoration (T1). Patient experiences were assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS) across the following 5 domains: functional limitations, psychological discomfort, physical pain, physical and social disability, and handicap. The follow-up duration was 8.1 ± 1.5 years, with a 100% implant survival rate. Overall patient satisfaction rate improved from 77.88% at T0 to 94.99% at T1 (P < .0001). Significant correlations were observed between higher VAS scores at T0 and clinical variables, such as implant diameter, number of implants placed, use of augmentation procedures, and loading timing. Qualitative differences between the participating countries were also noted, with Spanish patients reporting the most significant reduction in VAS scores from T0 to T1. This study highlights the importance of integrating PROMs in implant dentistry to address the efficacy-effectiveness gap and support a value-based care model. The results demonstrated high long-term patient satisfaction and acceptance of immediately placed zirconia implants in diverse clinical settings.

Ethnographer at Home, Social Reformer, Feminist ? Amely Bölte's Philanthropic Journalism and Ethnographic Gaze
