Suffering and Spirituality in Myanmar Today: Hope amid the National Crisis
Abstract Myanmar’s citizens have been devastated by the military coup on February 1, 2021, and by the ensuing violence, destruction, and chaos. As the people are struggling to cope with the horror and suffering, Christian faith and spirituality are playing significant roles for Myanmar Christians, albeit in different ways, depending on their personal spiritual preference (temperament) and theological perspective. This article explores the four major psycho-spiritual orientations (temperaments) using a paradigm developed by Dr. Corrine Ware: head spirituality (Type 1), heart spirituality (Type 2), mystical spirituality (Type 3), and social action spirituality (Type 4). In a separate section, ‘Hope amid Suffering’, I discuss how varying theological perspectives are producing at least three different kinds of hope (in terms of content and timing): hope for deliverance now; hope for deliverance later; and hope now and later. In short, Christian faith and spirituality are functioning as indispensable sources of hope amid great suffering.

Read moreEFFECT OF HEAT TREATMENT, PACKAGING MATERIAL AND STORAGE DURATION ON DORMANCY OF SESAME SEEDS (SESAMUM INDICUM L.) UNDER AMBIENT CONDITION.
Breaking seed dormancy helps to increase uniformity in germination and shorten the time required for seeds to germinate. The effect of dry-heat treatment on seed germination depended on dry-heat intensity and duration of exposure. The germination and germination index of sesame seeds without temperature treatment was the lowest value and followed by 60˚C heat treatment, and the highest germination was obtained from 50˚C treatment. The difference was also observed in packaging materials showing the higher germination percentage, earlier germination and more vigorous seedlings was obtained in woven polypropylene bag under temperature treated and untreated conditions. Moreover, the combination effect of temperature treatments, packaging materials and storage durations on germination percentage, germination index, seedling vigour index I and II were significant. Therefore, the heat treatment and type of packaging material during storage plays a vital role in the dormancy release of sesame. Among the heat treatments, 60˚C for 10 minute and 50˚C for 20 minute showed the better results than control (untreated). And 50˚C treatment had higher percentage germination, earlier germination and more vigorous seedlings than 60˚C treatment.
Read moreTranslating Research Into Practice: Case Study Of A Community-Based Dementia Caregiver Intervention
One of the most devastating impacts of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias is the toll on caregivers. Evidence from randomized clinical trials has demonstrated the effectiveness of providing psychosocial interventions for caregivers to lessen their burden. However, the implementation of such interventions in community settings has proved challenging. This case study describes outcomes of the implementation of an evidence-based intervention in a multisite program in Minnesota. Consistent with the original randomized clinical trial of the intervention, assessments of this program showed decreased depression and distress among caregivers. Participating in a greater number of caregiver counseling sessions was also associated with longer time to nursing home placement for the person with dementia. Some of the challenges in the community setting included having caregivers complete the full six counseling sessions and acquiring complete outcome data. Given the challenges faced in the community setting, web-based training for providers may be a cost-effective way to realize the maximum benefits of the intervention for vulnerable adults with dementia and their families.
