National Archives

The article presents an overview of the funds of the National Archives of the Republic of Karelia, containing documents on the history of the Kola (since 1899 – Aleksandrovsky) district of the Arkhangelsk province in the late 18th – early 20th centuries. Due to the specifics of the administrative-territorial division and management of the Kola district, documents are contained in many funds of the National Archives of the Republic of Karelia. The review examines the most interesting and significant documents from the archive funds, which are of interest to researchers of the Kola North.

The genus Anastoechus plays a crucial role in ecosystems, functioning both as a pollinator and as a natural enemy, with its larvae parasitizing grasshopper egg masses and adults visiting flowers. Despite its ecological significance, research on Anastoechus remains limited. In this study, we present a chromosomal-level genome assembly of Anastoechus asiaticus, utilizing BGI sequencing, PacBio sequencing and High-throughput chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C) technology. This represents the first genomic data for the genus Anastoechus, with a final genome size of 512.14 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 82.71 Mb. Genome annotation identified 12,751 protein-coding genes, of which functional annotations are available for 11,305. Additionally, non-coding RNA annotation revealed 1,753 tRNAs, 56 miRNAs, 79 rRNAs, and 49 snRNAs. Repetitive elements account for 290.64 Mb, constituting 56.75% of the genome. This high-quality genome provides valuable data for future studies on population genetics, ecological adaptation, and the evolution of Bombyliidae and other related insect groups.

ABSTRACT Professional library and archives associations recognize the value of cultural competency skills in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA). This study analyzes a sample of nearly 500 archival job postings to gauge the degree to which job postings demonstrate the employers’ awareness of and commitment to cultural competency in their recruiting practices. The central finding is that only 7 percent of job ads in the sample included knowledge, skills, or abilities relating to cultural competency among the requirements for working in an archives-related position. Thus, the study strongly suggests that the value the archives profession places on cultural competency is rarely reflected in the qualifications candidates who wish to work in archives are expected to have. This problem is most evident in job ads for technical services positions, in the South and Midwest sections of the country, and in nonacademic employment sectors. The authors provide recommendations for hiring practices that further a hiring institution's commitment to DEIA through the adoption of cultural competency as a framework for recruitment and interviewing.

Distinguishing between records worthy of permanent preservation and those without further value is a significant challenge, especially when it comes to the vast amounts of digital records created by public bodies. This paper outlines The National Archives’ ongoing exploration of and experimentation with the application of technology to the appraisal and selection of digital records. It sets out three perspectives from which this activity may be viewed - namely knowledge and information management practice, research and development of software tools and appraisal theory and practice – before detailing the direction being taken for the next phase of experimentation.

Between city and cemetery: Until the end of the 18th century, cemeteries were a natural part of Kraków, where the life of the inhabitants took place, both in terms of religious ceremonies in temples and everyday urban life. The Austrian authorities, modernizing the city’s functioning, banned burials in city cemeteries, and a general cemetery was established in 1803 near the village of Rakowice. In 2020, at 22E Rakowicka Street, i.e., between the city and the cemetery, a new modern building of the National Archives in Kraków was built, with the archives stored there bringing former Kraków inhabitants out of the darkness of oblivion, including: the traveller Anzelm Teodor Dzwonkowski (1764–1850) and his family.

Carnot Compression is a startup company developing an innovative technology for air and gas compression. This technology is inherently oil-free and isothermal due to the use of water to simultaneously compress and cool the gas throughout the process. Isothermal gas compression eliminates the need to cool the compressed gas so it may lead to significant energy savings. The development of Carnot’s isothermal compressor is limited by the lack of insight into the flow and detailed behavior of the fluids (water and air/gas) inside the air end. Previous and current attempts at Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations by Carnot have been unable to provide the level of accuracy required to use simulations for technology development. In this Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) project, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) used the CFD package Star-CCM+ to successfully develop a CFD simulation, providing the much-needed insight required to speed up the development. The work is intended to enable Carnot Compression to unlock its technology potential to a level sufficient for commercialization of the intended first product. The work will also prepare Carnot to scale the technology to much larger and more energy intensive applications, positioning it to broaden the product applications. Successful development of the technology has the potential to result in 20% or more efficiency gains for compression processes, or about $3 billion in annual energy savings potential for the U.S. alone.
