National Indigenous Organization of Colombia

Abstract Indigenous knowledge is increasingly recognized as vital for sustainable forest management, environmental protection, and biodiversity conservation. However, it is often marginalized or dismissed by Western science and only valued when it aligns with dominant paradigms, while alternative views are reduced to cultural beliefs. We challenge this exclusion by exploring Indigenous understandings of fire and forests in Colombia, which are based on the worldviews of the Arhuaco, Pijao, Embera Chamí, Tikuna, and Uitoto Peoples. Through Indigenous-led research and collaborative dialogue, we demonstrate that fire is not just a physical or ecological event but a sacred and transformative force. Indigenous researchers state that, beyond its physical form, fire symbolizes origin, spirit, and deity. It acts as a source of healing, purification, and transformation. Its role in rituals and ceremonies facilitates communication, knowledge sharing, and the balance of Indigenous territories. Fire is deeply connected with various natural elements, representing the ongoing flow of spiritual energy. Likewise, forests are regarded as sacred, life-giving beings that support and teach, forming the core of cultural and ethnic identity. Unlike dominant fire and forest management practices, which are often driven by profit and a human–nature dualism, Indigenous fire stewardship offers holistic frameworks that integrate ecological, cultural, and spiritual elements. We believe that Indigenous knowledge should be acknowledged as a valid form of science, with its oral traditions and stories providing vital insights into traditional ecological knowledge. We aim to decolonize fire governance by promoting a plural and intercultural understanding of fire and forest stewardship. Genuine collaboration that includes Indigenous perspectives is not only a matter of justice but also essential for transforming management practices into more resilient and inclusive approaches.

Abstract BackgroundColombia is currently the world’s main recipient country for Venezuelan migrants, and women represent a high proportion of them. This article presents the first report of a cohort of Venezuelan migrant women entering Colombia through Cúcuta and its metropolitan area (the main land entry point to this country). The study aimed to describe the health status and access to healthcare services among Venezuelan migrant women in Colombia with irregular migration status, and to analyze changes in those conditions at a one-month follow-up.MethodsA longitudinal cohort study of Venezuelan migrant women, 18 to 45 years, who entered Colombia with an irregular migration status, was carried out in 2021. Study participants were recruited in temporary shelters, transit points, and migrant settlements in Cúcuta and the metropolitan area. At baseline, we administered a structured questionnaire including sociodemographic characteristics, migration history, health history, access to health services, sexual and reproductive health, practice of early detection of cervical cancer and breast cancer, food insecurity, and depressive symptoms. The women were again contacted by phone one month later, between March and July 2021, and a second questionnaire was applied.ResultsA total of 2,298 women were included in the baseline measurement and 56.4% could be contacted again at the one-month follow-up. A significant increase was found in the percentage of women who had a health problem during the past month (from 23.1% to 31.4%; p<0.01); as well as in the share who reported moderate, severe, or extreme difficulty working or performing daily chores (from 5.5% to 11.0%; p= 0.03) and who rated their health as fair (from 13.0% to 31.2%; p<0.01). Meanwhile, the percentage of women with depressive symptoms decreased from 80.5% to 71.2% (p<0.01).ConclusionThis report is a starting point for the longitudinal follow-up of the cohort, which will allow us to better understand how the health status of Venezuelan women changes during the migration flow in Colombia.

Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is a fast, low cost, portable, and sensitive technique that separates ions in a drift tube under the influence of an electric field according to their size and shape. IMS represents a non-invasive and reliable instrumental alternative for the diagnosis of different diseases through the analysis of volatile metabolites in biological samples. IMS has applications in medicine in the study of volatile compounds for the non-invasive diagnose of bronchial carcinoma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other diseases analysing breath, urine, blood, faeces, and other biological samples. This technique has been used to study complex mixtures such as proteomes, metabolomes, complete organisms like bacteria and viruses, monitor anaesthetic agents, determine drugs, pharmaceuticals, and volatile compounds in human body fluids, and others. Pharmaceutical applications include analysis of over-the-counter-drugs, quality assessment, and cleaning verification. Medical practice needs non-invasive, robust, secure, fast, real-time, and low-cost methods with high sensitivity and compact size instruments to diagnose different diseases and IMS is the diagnostic tool that meets all these requirements of the Medicine of the future.

This paper describes the development and implementation of a prototype that monitors the availability of space in a sheltered parking lot, establishing quality of service (QoS) parameters. Consequently, radiofrequency modules were used to transmit the information acquired through a network of adapted sensors. The samples taken from the status (available, occupied) are displayed, as well as the data acquired and sent to a web server where they are stored and displayed in a mobile application and the end user can check the status of the parking space, as well as its parking fee, location and structure. Each sensor has an accuracy of 3 mm ranging between 3 cm and 4 m, while the radio frequency transmission has a power accuracy of 4 dB to insure adequate performance.
