Iridium contributes to “maritime safety”
Iridium is well known as the only mobile voice and data satellite communications network that spans the entire globe, including the poles. Iridium enables connections between people, organizations and assets to and from anywhere, in real time. Together with its ecosystem of partner companies, Iridium delivers an innovative and rich portfolio of reliable solutions for markets that require truly global communications.

Abstract Plasma or ion assistance in physical vapor deposition (PVD) processes is making possible the creation of coating materials and structures which are unachievable by other deposition techniques. This chapter discusses some basic plasma principles and then outlines some aspects of the influence of plasma bombardment on coating morphology. As Jehn has pointed out, a number of film nucleation and growth models have been published. The chapter considers only those models that rely on empirical observations to describe the nature of film growth morphology under different conditions. Then, the main evaporative and sputtering processes are discussed followed by a description of some hybrid techniques. The simplest sputtering plasma is that of dc diode glow discharge and the chapter provides the model in which the basics of the sputtering processes are discussed.

The increasing use of agile methods to develop UI-intensive systems has led to a need to find ways of integrating usability into agile teams reconciling the convergence and divergent points between the two areas. Agile usability researchers at Virginia Tech have partnered with Meridium, Inc. to develop and implement an integrated approach known as extreme scenario based design (XSBD). Based on an analysis of core values and principles of both areas, and work from other agile usability researchers we identified four requirements that need to be met for an integrated approach to work effectively. We report on the results of using XSBD to develop a product at Meridium, summarizing how it addresses those requirements and draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the approach making connections back to core principles of agile usability.

Status of the IRIDIUM System: Moving Rapidly Towards Global Wireless Service in 1998
The IRIDIUM system is a satellite-based, wireless personal communications network that is designed to permit any type of telephone transmission-voice, data, fax, or paging-to reach its destination anywhere on Earth. Consisting of 66 interconnected satellites orbiting 780 km above the Earth, the IRIDIUM system will facilitate communication for business professionals, travelers, residents of rural or undeveloped areas, disaster relief teams, and others. As the launch date of the first IRIDIUM satellite approaches, the many various elements of the program remain on, or ahead of, schedule to deliver global wireless personal communications in 1998.
