We have long known that the organ was a key element in the solemnization of late medieval liturgy. Evidence for the existence of church organs and professional organists in the fourteenth century is omnipresent throughout Europe. 1 Church customaries, ordinals, and references in different kinds of historical documents give us a rough sense of the liturgical uses of the organ, namely the chant-organ alternatim practice at Mass and Vespers and the performance of keyboard arrangements of vocal compositions such as motets and secular songs.
