Digital therapeutics (DTx) for hypertension are among the most promising treatment options, demonstrating proven antihypertensive effects. This study investigates the determinants of the home blood pressure (BP) lowering effect of DTx, using prospectively collected daily data. The B-INDEX study (Behavioral Modification Index) is a multicenter intervention study in patients with hypertension, involving a 6-month DTx period, followed by an additional 6 months without it. Home BP, body weight and composition, physical activity, and sleep patterns were monitored daily using digital devices. This first report on B-INDEX analyzed data collected during a 6-month DTx treatment period. A total of 198 patients with hypertension (mean age, 54.9±10.6 years; 57.1% male; mean body mass index, 26.7±5.3 kg/m2; 57.6% taking antihypertensives) were included in the analysis. A marked reduction in BP was observed in the first 4 weeks (morning home BP, -6.2/-2.6 mm Hg). Mixed model analysis demonstrated that baseline home BP, older age, self-efficacy score, reduction in self-reported salt intake, and mild initial weight loss (-0.5 kg at week 4) were significant determinants of home BP reduction at 6 months. Older age, salt reduction, and initial weight loss were predictive factors for effective BP reduction through DTx, independent of baseline BP values. We propose that the first 4 weeks are the key period for hypertension treatment with DTx. URL: https://www.umin.ac.jp/ctr/; Unique identifier: UMIN000050479.

Machine learning methods in recent years have focused on multimodal input and cross-modal tasks, and they are used as approaches to problems in various domains. Associating comic texts and characters using these approaches is informative for commercial activities such as speech synthesis and automatic translation of texts. In this study, we address the task of associating a text with a speaker in comics. It is challenging to correspond between them because these are not self-evidently attached, and few studies have attempted. These previous studies have less considered the continuity of comics such as narrative flow or contextual information. We assume that considering the continuity of comics is effective for speaker estimation. This paper proposes algorithms for estimating the reading order of frames or texts, and it also proposes methods for estimating speakers based on these orders. As a result, our proposed method improves accuracy compared to previous methods. Consideration of the frame order is an effective clue to the comic speaker estimation.

Using the coincidental timing of a national survey conducted in Japan before and after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011, this study reports a rare natural experiment that explored how the experience of a nuclear disaster influenced technology adoption in middle-aged and older adults. We conducted path analyses assessing how technology or nontechnology adoption intention and behavior changed before and after the nuclear disaster and whether age could moderate the potential change over and above other relevant factors. Our models supported that Japanese middle-aged to older adults reported fewer technology adoption behaviors after experiencing of the earthquake. However, the negative impact of the earthquake was not more pronounced in older adults. Our results suggest that researchers need to pay more attention to the issue of how loss of trust and/or perceived risk affect technology adoption interacting with other relevant factors, particularly, age-related factors and abilities.

Data transmission via audio link on AM radio system is shown to be achievable by using Acoustic OFDM. We employ Acoustic OFDM to embed data onto audio contents that are then broadcast as AM radio signals. We tuned the parameters, and performed experiments. Text data as URL can be delivered to mobile phone through existing MF AM radio system and radios.
