Despite an increase in migrant entrepreneurship research in recent years, the current literature predominantly emphasizes the influence of structural changes, often overlooking the agency of migrant entrepreneurs in overcoming marginalization. Drawing on identity work theory, this paper explores the findings gathered from interviews with migrant entrepreneurs in Australia to address this knowledge gap. The findings offer an alternative perspective on how migrant entrepreneurs navigate different types of identity work to overcome structural, relational and sociocultural marginalization. They engage in identity construction by affirming their personal identity and connecting with their social identity. Migrant entrepreneurs then mobilize their identities by signaling their professional and entrepreneurial identities and personifying their entrepreneurial role. Finally, migrant entrepreneurs also recategorize their identities by adopting identity fluidity and embracing hybrid identities. These insights have significant implications for research into the agency of migrant entrepreneurs and for identifying ways to overcome their marginalization.

While error reporting benefits organizations, it can expose employees to personal risks. As such, existing studies mainly reveal that employees report errors based on their benefits/costs analyses. Unfortunately, limited attention has been paid to how leaders can encourage error reporting from a moral perspective. Based on affective events theory, this study investigates how and when supervisors’ self-sacrificing behavior promotes employees’ error reporting. Using a two-stage questionnaire survey (Study 1, N = 213) and a scenario-based experiment (Study 2, N = 282), we find that it through moral elevation rather than leader-member exchange relationships with supervisors (a social exchange perspective) and identification with supervisors (a social identity perspective) that supervisors’ self-sacrificing behavior enables employees’ error reporting. Moreover, we find that employees with higher moral identity are more likely to be influenced by supervisors’ self-sacrificial behavior. These findings advance extant error reporting literature and hold important implications for practitioners to encourage error reporting.

Building on the remarkable success of the first edition, which explored the intersection of sustainability and innovation, this second symposium shifts focus to examine the critical role of politics and ideology in shaping sustainable innovation. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, this session will investigate pivotal research questions, such as how political ideologies influence organizational strategies, how regulatory environments create barriers or opportunities for innovation, and how stakeholder diversity and alignment impact the integration of sustainability and innovation. The symposium aims to advance theoretical and empirical understanding of the dynamic interplay between politics, ideology, and sustainable innovation through these inquiries. Distinguished academics will debate cutting-edge research, offering novel insights into addressing grand challenges like climate change, inequality, and resource scarcity, and defining a future research agenda to bridge key gaps in the field.

Foreignness is a critical concept in international business, often seen as either a liability or an asset, or a combination of both. Recent research views foreignness as an organizational identity that firms can strategically manage. This study conceptualizes foreignness as a subsidiary identity that shapes firm agency and strategic direction. Drawing on a multiple case study of sixteen foreign multinational enterprise (MNE) subsidiaries in Cameroon, we develop a taxonomy identifying four distinct foreignness identity categories: Emersed-local, Balanced, Pseudo-local, and Foreign. These categories reflect variations in values and stakeholder management approaches. Firms emphasize foreignness or localness based on their values and responses to local stakeholder expectations. Foreign subsidiaries prioritize foreignness, while Emersed-local subsidiaries emphasize their local identity. The other two groups integrate aspects of both foreignness and localness. This study advances the identity-based perspective in international business by redefining foreignness as a subsidiary identity and exploring its influence on non-market strategies in challenging institutional contexts.

This study examines the impact of the quantity (number of digital tools) and quality (sophistication of technologies) of digital technologies on the extent of equity fundraising in firms, emphasizing the role of organizational learning and market knowledge in this relationship. Drawing on the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities frameworks, we explore how adoption of a higher number of digital technologies and of the highest quality shapes firms' resource mobilization strategies. While younger firms are known as more agile and innovative, mature firms benefit to a greater extent from the adoption of quantity and quality of digital technologies for fundraising, raising questions regarding the role of accumulated market experience and organizational learning for resource mobilization. Using micro-level data from Pitchbook Canada comprised of 5,607 Canadian companies during 2010-2023 we demonstrate that more mature firms, in particular 11 years since the establishment and older, are more able to increase equity fundraising, given their focus on an increased number of digital tools adoption of highly advanced technologies. The study contributes to entrepreneurship finance and digital transformation literature by differentiating between technology adoption strategies, the role of firm maturity for fundraising and the ability of firms to raise external equity financing with technologies.

Organizational socialization is a critical process for employee and organizational effectiveness. However, recent macro shocks, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the remote revolution, and the Great Resignation 1.0 and 2.0, have been challenging core micro-foundational aspects of organizational socialization. In light of these recent macro shocks, it is important to explore the micro-foundational responses newcomers, leaders, groups, and organizations can adopt to sustain the effectiveness of organizational socialization going forward. In this symposium, we assemble four papers that examine how best to socialize newcomers within workplaces facing external macro shocks ranging from the aftermath of COVID-19 and the remote revolution, to the global competition for talent and the myriad of its informational and psychological side-effects for newcomers, insiders, and organizations. Despite existing studies’ endeavor to address the uncertainty of emerging multi-national enterprises (EMNEs), the trade policy on international operations has been underexplored. Thus, this study aims to identify the impact of trade policy uncertainty (TPU) on EMNEs’ internationalization and explore factors that mitigate TPU. Building on existing studies, we argue that the internationalization of Chinese EMNEs may face various geopolitical tensions. Amid diverse uncertainties, navigating TPU should be handled as the strategic priority. To examine those hypotheses, the three-way interaction effect between a firm’s internal (i.e., digitalization), external resource (i.e., low supply concentration), and HPF. As a result of the fixed effect model of panel analysis, we find that digitalization alleviates the negative impact of TPU on firm internationalization, while supplier concentration intensifies this relationship. When high HPF is present, both the positive effect of digitalization and the negative effect of supplier concentration are further positively moderated. This study contributes to existing literature by identifying the impact of TPU among the uncertainties affecting EMNEs’ internationalization and identifying the various firm resources that mitigate it. This study suggests that EMNEs should invest in digitalization and supplier management to overcome TPU, with the effect being enhanced in situations of overperformance.

Our study analyses how individual countries differ in their effectiveness of creating knowledge inflows from immigrant inventors. Building on literature on national level absorptive capacity, we extend existing research’s emphasis on technological opportu- nities, i.e., how countries technologically differ in recognizing and creating additional benefits from immigrant inventors’ knowledge, by what we coin “cultural opportuni- ties,” i.e., how countries culturally differ in recognizing and creating such additional benefits. We propose three facets through which cultural opportunities affect a nation’s ability to recognize and subsequently realize additional value from immigrant inventors’ knowledge: (1) Cultural recognition: Countries find it easier to recognize opportunities for additional knowledge inflows from immigrant inventors when their awareness for them is high. (2) Cultural complacency: Conversely, countries with an exalted sense of accomplishment and an overly positive take on immigrant inventors risk becoming complacent and create less knowledge inflows from them. (3) Cultural compatibility: Countries can generate more knowledge inflows from an immigrant inventor if she orig- inates from a country that is culturally close, i.e., has a similar perspective on social norms and institutions. To empirically test our concept of cultural opportunities, we draw on cross-country patent citation dyads, as well as media sentiment and immigra- tion data from 31 countries over a period of 21 years.

While the existing literature pays most attention to incumbents and new entrants in technology evolution, the burgeoning ecosystem literature sheds light on a broader array of players and stakeholders—complementors, competitors (including incumbents and entrants), suppliers, customers, and government agents. These studies reveal a delicate and intricate network of connections between firms and these different stakeholders, suggesting that the dynamics of technology and industry evolution are far more complex than previously understood. The purpose of this symposium is to enrich the investigation of technology and industry evolution by integrating an ecosystem perspective into the line of studies. The three papers presented in this symposium aim to capitalize on this opportunity, offering fresh insights from this perspective to the Strategic Management (STR) and Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) audience, by expanding our understanding of these complex interdependencies and their role in the evolution of industries and technologies.
