ABSTRACT Researcher-filmmakers Catherine Gough-Brady, Kim Munro, Christine Rogers and Cassandra Tytler explore the embodied spaces and connections between the creator and the audience. Using their own practice in installation, theatre and filmmaking, they interrogate who these spectators might be. They use three ‘provocations’ as a way of discussing the audience: How do we engage the audience in the work? What methods do we use to engage the audience before and after the work? And, what is the place of critical filmmaking both in academia and in wider society? There is a plurality of voices in the responses, in the experiences, and the works shared. Yet, a central theme emerges in these diverse voices of a screen-based creative practitioner’s desire for the audience to be an active community rather than a passive spectator.

Objective Negative affective states are known risk factors for suicidal ideation (SI). However, most research to date has used cross-sectional or longitudinal designs with long follow-up periods to understand these relationships. Thus, the current study aimed to understand how specific negative affective states may act as acute risk factors for same day SI and predict next day SI. Methods Daily diary cards from 83 adults (4,648 observations; M age = 29.5; 67% female; 61% White) seeking treatment at an 8-week dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) intensive outpatient program were analyzed. Sadness, anger, anxiety, guilt, and shame were independently evaluated to understand their association with same day SI intensity and examine how they predicted next day SI intensity. Results Multilevel regression revealed at the within person level that increases in all five affective states was associated with same day SI. However, only increased sadness and guilt, and decreased anxiety, predicted next day SI, covarying for same day SI. Conclusion Sadness and guilt may be salient acute risk factors for next day SI. Clinicians who implement treatments that use daily diary cards, such as DBT, may want to attend to these specific affective states when monitoring client diary cards and during suicide risk assessment.

ABSTRACT In this paper, we situate the current politics of Brazil – particularly its elements of exclusion, division, and hate – within the trajectory of developments in the country during the 20th and 21st centuries. We suggest that many of the current struggles must be understood in the context not only of both modern developments but of the very multi-faceted discourse around modernity. While focusing on Brazil, we discuss some the implications of the Brazilian case for other democracies.

Is the erasure of memories truly possible? What existed prior to this erasure, and what remains afterward? In this paper, I will explore the concept of erasure within the art of second-generation, Holocaust survivor artists and its implications in psychoanalysis, particularly examining its connection to the phenomenon of dissociation among these individuals. I will distinguish between two types of pathological dissociation through second-generation, Holocaust survivor artists: one in which a link between different states of consciousness is preserved, allowing individuals to experience phantom pain, and another type where symptoms are less accessible for processing and analytical work. In the latter case, these symptoms are primarily sensorial and primal, which calls for a specific set of clinical recommendations. Additionally, the paper will outline strategies for clinical responses to trauma experienced by second-generation Holocaust survivors.

ABSTRACT Psychoanalytic therapy has been considered ineffective for Asian Americans and clinicians in the field recommend family therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as the preferred modality of treatment. I explore factors within psychoanalysis that contribute to its negative perception as a treatment option for Asian Americans; (1) gross misattunements caused by an inappropriate use of psychoanalytic theories that claim universal application and (2) psychoanalysis’s disregard of sociocultural factors as playing an important role in individuals’ psychological make-up. When these impediments are addressed, psychoanalysis has a lot to offer Asian Americans; its regard for the sanctity of individuals’ subjectivity can be a god-send to Asians whose individuality is eclipsed in collectivistic culture. Furthermore, psychoanalytic theories offer rich potential for understanding many aspects of the Asian and Asian American experiences, including trauma associated with immigration, anti-Asian racism, and racialization in the American context. Using a case example, I demonstrate psychoanalysis’s rich potential to accommodate the full complexity of the Asian American experience.

The European Late Iron Age (ca. 5th-1st centuries BCE) is characterized by significant economic, social, and cultural transformations, including the development and intensification of cultural and economic networks. These features make the last centuries BCE relevant for the study of human territorial mobility and its demographic and social correlates. In this study, we investigate the frequency and nature of human mobility during the Late Iron Age in one of the central regions of the La Tène cultural sphere, the area that is now Switzerland. We further address the cultural factors that may have influenced the mobility patterns. Therefore, we analyze strontium (87Sr/86Sr), oxygen (δ18O) and sulfur (δ34S) isotopic ratios from dental enamel and bone collagen in a human skeletal dataset (N87Sr/86Sr = 101; N δ18O = 90; N δ34S = 121) representing various Swiss contexts dating to the last five centuries BCE. These isotopic data are contextualized using faunal and vegetation baselines and further explored for any demographic and funerary patterns. Results reveal spatial heterogeneity in the frequency of nonlocal individuals, suggesting that both long- and short-distance residential changes were influenced by regional political and economic differences across contexts. The absence of a correlation between geographic origin and sex suggests that specific residential rules may not have been prevalent in these communities. The lack of an association between isotopic variability and funerary treatment suggests that geographic origin held limited social significance compared to sex, socioeconomic status, and community membership. These findings enhance our understanding of the demographic and cultural processes in this geochronological region highlighting the complexities and challenges of estimating past mobility patterns and geographic origin using isotopic data.

In November 1779, the Irish militias known as the Volunteers rallied in Dublin demanding a free trade for Ireland. Unsurprisingly, this agenda met with opposition from manufacturing interests in Britain. Prime minister William Pitt tried to solve the dispute through commercial reforms that incorporated Ireland into a coherent imperial trade policy. But this proved unacceptable to Irish politicians and agitators, who regarded free trade as a step toward more – not less – political autonomy. The paper investigates the economic and political meanings associated with free trade during the late 18th century and how they related to the literature on political economy.
