This article aims to analyze the memories of incarcerated elderly people about family. This is an exploratory and analytical study, with a qualitative approach, carried out in three prison units in Bahia, with 31 incarcerated elderly people, through semi-structured interview. Most are male (30), between 60 to 65-years-old (21), married (12) and with three to four children (10). The results show that the 10 most evoked words were: family; sons; mom; father; women; life; cry; today; brothers; and longing. The study showed that the family constitution is maintained because the experiences that are symbolized in it have socially crystallized definitions as references. Anchored by social frames of memories that remain, since they remain alive in the groups and are permanently maintained. It was also found that the family plays an extremely important role in their lives and that the mother is the central point of this family.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for causing Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19), a heterogeneous clinical condition that manifests varying symptom severity according to the demographic profile of the studied population. While many studies have focused on the spread of COVID-19 in large urban centers in Brazil, few have evaluated medium or small cities in the Northeast region. The aims of this study were: (i) to identify risk factors for mortality from SARS-CoV-2 infection, (ii) to evaluate the gene expression patterns of key immune response pathways using nasopharyngeal swabs of COVID-19 patients, and (iii) to identify the circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants in the residents of a medium-sized city in Northeast Brazil. A total of 783 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 between May 2020 and August 2021 were included in this study. Clinical-epidemiological data from patients who died and those who survived were compared. Patients were also retrospectively divided into three groups based on disease severity: asymptomatic, mild, and moderate/severe. Samples were added to a qPCR array for analyses of 84 genes involved with immune response pathways and sequenced using the Oxford Nanopore MinION technology. Having pre-existing comorbidity; being male; having cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; and PCR cycle threshold (Ct) values under 22 were identified as risk factors for mortality. Analysis of the expression profiles of inflammatory pathway genes showed that the greater the infection severity, the greater the activation of inflammatory pathways, triggering the cytokine storm and downregulating anti-inflammatory pathways. Viral genome analysis revealed the circulation of multiple lineages, such as B.1, B.1.1.28, Alpha, and Gamma, suggesting that multiple introduction events had occurred over time. This study's findings help identify the specific strains and increase our understanding of the true state of local health. In addition, our data demonstrate that epidemiological and genomic surveillance together can help formulate public health strategies to guide governmental actions.

STEM education in Vietnam is prioritized, yet effective learning may be difficult for students attending transnational universities. The purpose of this study is to examine the self-regulated learning experiences of STEM undergraduate students attending a collaborative transnational university in Vietnam. Challenges included English language instruction and STEM-specific terminology. Despite barriers to their learning, students describe strategies for navigating their learning process. Strategies included extensive rereading of the material, using Google to look up new terms/ideas or to translate words, asking instructors for translation, and reviewing online resources. Implications for practice include instructors providing more detailed feedback and guidance and leveraging technology use for learning.

Background.Patient engagement efforts often rely on a participatory research approach, which means engaging patients and community members in all aspects of research. As research team members, they require familiarity with the principles of human subject protection, privacy, and institutional review boards (IRB). However, the time required for individual IRB training may be a barrier to engaging community members in participatory research. As more community members participated in research, the State Networks of Colorado Practices and Partners (SNOCAP) was faced with finding a balance between including community members as part of the research team and the significant time commitment and institutional requirements for human subjects research oversight.Objective.Design and implement a community training on human subject protection in research.Methods.The SNOCAP team worked with the leadership from the Colorado Multi-Institutional Review Board (COMIRB) to develop a training programme that included the ethical principles and guidelines for the protection of human subjects. Results. The final training programme was based on the core principles of the Belmont Report: respect for persons, beneficence and justice. Privacy was taught using the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) national guidelines.Conclusions.The members of the High Plains Research Network Community Advisory Council were fully engaged in developing the training programme, as well as in the training itself. They were committed to the principles and guidelines for protecting the rights and welfare of human subjects. Patients and community members have become a critical part of our research team. They understand the principles of human subjects protection and privacy and incorporate these principles into their research activities.

American college literature classes often have objectives and outcomes to address needed real-world skills, such as critical thinking, but the methods to teach and measure these skills has been considered outdated. Comic books, as a type of multimodal literature, are perceived to connect to real-world reading and writing better than traditional ‘text-only’ literature; furthermore, comic books are gaining educational merit as their use in the classroom has increased in the twenty-first century. Using a mixed-method embedded design, this study explored how comic books engage critical thinking in a group (N = 17) of American college literature students and how this critical thinking compared to critical thinking engagement in traditional (no images) literature. The study suggests that comic books engage student critical thinking at levels equal to or greater than traditional (no images) literature.

Abstract The small-scale spatial distribution of European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), larvae and damage in whorl stage corn, Zea mays L., was characterized using geostatistics. Spatial distribution of O. nubilalis larval feeding damage was studied at Clay Center, North Platte, and Concord, NE, during June–July 1992–1994, and spatial distribution of O. nubilalis larvae and damage was studied at Clay Center in June 1997. Semivariograms were calculated to model the change in spatial correlation with increasing distance between samples. Spatial distribution of larval damage during 1992–1994 was best described using a spherical model. Damage was spatially correlated among plants at distances up to 2.84 m apart. The spatial distribution of larvae in 1997 was best described using an exponential model for three of seven data sets, a spherical model for one of seven data sets and no model fit three of seven data sets. Larvae were spatially correlated among plants at distances up to 3.05 m apart. These data have implications for developing sampling plans for management of O. nubilialis, and for site-specific agriculture.

Nebraska's community college system will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 1998. From the “poor stepchild” of higher education, Nebraska's community colleges have grown up to be the fastest growing and a highly respected sector of Nebraska's postsecondary education system, serving every corner of the state. Applied technology (vocational and occupational) education is the primary focus of the system — over 86% of all students in the system are enrolled in applied technology education. Local governance and local funding are hallmarks of the system's success, and a newly re‐enforced funding partnership among the six community college areas, the State ofNebraska, and college constituents will assure the viability and financial stability of the system into the next century.

Soil sampling to the depth of plant root growth is an effective practice that may reduce fertilizer applications and the potential for leaching loss to groundwater. The objective of this study was to compare the utility of a power auger with traditional core sampling techniques for sampling soils for NO−3‐N. Since the practical use of NO−3‐N sampling is to help determine future fertilizer needs, the two methods were compared in production fields with known differentials in N applications. The sampling methods were compared on four soil types: Thurman fine sand (sandy, mixed, mesic Udorthentic Haplustolls), Boelus fine sand (sandy over loamy, mixed, mesic Udic Haplustolls), Hord‐Hobbs silt loam (fine‐silty, mixed, mesic Cumulic Haplustolls‐fine‐silty, mixed, nonacid, mesic Mollic Ustilfluvents) and a Crofton‐Nora silt loam (fine‐silty, mixed [calcareous], mesic Typic Ustorthents‐fine‐silty, mixed, mesic Udic Haplustolls). Average NO−3‐N concentrations measured in samples collected with the auger and core machines to a depth of 36 in. were equal over all locations. There was no difference between the average NO−3‐N incremental depth sample and the mixed sample for any site. Thus where depth of NO−3 is unimportant, the core samples would not have to be separated into depth increments to give a reliable estimate of soil NO−3‐N. At one site where samples collected with the auger were not consistent with the core sampler, auger samples overestimated the low NO−3‐N by 76% and underestimated the high NO−3‐N by 86%. Neither sampling method was consistently more precise in its estimate of NO−3‐N as measured by experimental variation (F‐test of total sum of squares). Both sampling methods were able to detect differences in NO−3‐N levels in the low and medium NO−3‐N levels found in the fields tested.

Abstract Foliar applications of registered and nonregistered insecticides for first-generation ECB control were applied 24 Jun to dryland corn plots in Dixon County, Nebr. Granular insecticides were applied with a specially modified Hahn Hi-boy. Liquid insecticides were applied in 16 gal water/acre at 3 mph and 30 psi with a specially modified backpack sprayer. Each single-row plot was 100 ft (40-inch spacing). ECB-infested plants were marked for later evaluation. Experimental design was a randomized complete block with 4 replicates. In late July, 10 plants/replicate were dissected from tassel to ground, examined, and the number of corn borer cavities recorded.

Projections of employment opportunities for graduates in traditional educational specialties indicate limited growth, while a demand for community counselors is expected to grow more rapidly. In order to provide training applicable for counseling students anticipating employment in a community setting, there is need for a planned, systematic approach to program development. This article proposes a three‐phase model for change that considers departmental resources, student characteristics and agency needs.
