Design and Development of International Mathematics Assessments for Teachers and Pupils
Developing assessments of knowledge for international and comparative studies is a challenging task. There are differences across countries regarding when and with what emphasis content topics are covered; even a subject matter area as well defined as mathematics shows substantial variation in timing, coverage, and emphasis of mathematical content, thus deciding what should be included on an assessment is not straightforward. In this chapter, we describe the frameworks for the development of the FIRSTMATH assessments for beginning teachers and their pupils and the challenges in developing versions of various instruments that demonstrate evidence of validity and reliability across multiple national and linguistic contexts

ABSTRACTOffering academic programs that meet community need has long been a core mission of community colleges. However, determining which job skills and credentials are needed for employment in the community is challenging. In order to facilitate a holistic and community-based perspective, our 2-year community college developed a structured curricular planning model to guide programmatic decision-making based on regional economic and labor-market data. These procedures cumulatively inform comprehensive curricular planning related to program offerings and describe the relationship of this process to integrated planning. This model can assist other community colleges with designing processes to refine programing mix.

Apparent Distortions in Photography and the Geometry of Visual Space
In this paper I contrast the geometric structure of phenomenal visual space with that of photographic images. I argue that topologically both are two-dimensional and that both involve central projections of scenes being depicted. However, I also argue that the metric structures of the spaces differ inasmuch as two types of “apparent distortions”—marginal distortion in wide-angle photography and close-up distortions—which occur in photography do not occur in the corresponding visual experiences. In particular, I argue that the absence of marginal distortions in vision is evidence for a holistic metric of visual space that is spherical, and that the absence of close-up distortions shows that the local metric structure possesses a dynamic variable curvature which is dependent upon the distance away of objects being viewed at a given time.

The jail-involved population-people with a history of arrest in the previous year-has high rates of illness, which leads to high costs for society. A significant percentage of jail-involved people are estimated to become newly eligible for coverage through the Affordable Care Act's expansion of Medicaid, including coverage of substance abuse treatment and mental health care. In this article we explore the need to break down the current policy silos between health care and criminal justice, to benefit both sectors and reduce unnecessary costs resulting from lack of coordination. To draw attention to the hidden costs of the current system, we review three case studies, from Washington State, Los Angeles County in California, and New York City. Each case study addresses different aspects of care needed by or provided to the jail-involved population, including mental health and substance abuse, emergency care, and coordination of care transitions. Ultimately, bending the cost curve for health care and criminal justice will require greater integration of the two systems.
Read moreFatigue Behavior of Dissimilar 5754/7075 and 7075/5754 Spot Friction Welds in Lap-Shear Specimens
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Fatigue behavior of spot friction welds or friction stir spot welds in lap-shear specimens of dissimilar aluminum 5754-O and 7075-T6 sheets is investigated based on experimental observations and two fatigue life estimation models. Optical micrographs of the 5754/7075 and 7075/5754 welds after failure under cyclic loading conditions are examined to understand the failure mechanisms of the welds. The micrographs show that the 5754/7075 welds mainly fail from the kinked fatigue crack through the lower sheet thickness. Also, the micrographs show that the 7075/5754 welds mainly fail from the kinked fatigue crack through the lower sheet thickness and from the fracture surface through the upper sheet thickness. A kinked fatigue crack growth model based on the stress intensity factor solutions for finite kinked cracks and a structural stress model based on the closed-form structural stress solutions are adopted to estimate the fatigue lives of the 5754/7075 and 7075/5754 welds in lap-shear specimens. The fatigue life estimations based on the kinked fatigue crack growth model and the structural stress model agree well with the experimental results.</div></div>
Read moreUltrasonic Spot Welding of AZ31B to Galvanized Mild Steel
Ultrasonic spot welds were made between sheets of 0.8-mm-thick hot-dip-galvanized mild steel and 1.6-mm-thick AZ31B-H24. Lap-shear strengths of 3.0-4.2 kN were achieved with weld times of 0.3-1.2 s. Failure to achieve strong bonding of joints where the Zn coating was removed from the steel surface indicate that Zn is essential to the bonding mechanism. Microstructure characterization and microchemical analysis indicated temperatures at the AZ31-steel interfaces reached at least 344 C in less than 0.3 s. The elevated temperature conditions promoted annealing of the AZ31-H24 metal and chemical reactions between it and the Zn coating.
