A guide has been developed, highlighting various sustainability criteria of solvents used in the paints and coatings industry.

This paper outlines the requirements of Directive 98/8/EC — the Biocidal Products Directive — and the effect that implementation of the Directive is likely to have on the market for, and development of, biocides.

It is generally recognised that a major cause of the decline in demand for wood windows is their relatively high maintenance demands. This has prompted considerable effort in the coatings and joinery industries aimed at developing coating systems that provide maintenance intervals beyond the four to five years traditionally regarded as normal. This requirement was first recognised in the UK in the late 1960s in relation to the industrialised building of schools and hospitals. Collaboration at that time between a coating manufacturer and a local authority consortium led to the first significant UK application of water-borne acrylic technology in the painting of soft-wood joinery. During the intervening 30 years experience has accumulated to show that the paint system used is capable of a remarkable order of performance. Examples exist of paint that has retained its integrity and protective capabilities for over 28 years of exposure without any maintenance. This paper will review the development of the industrialised finishing process, and available information on the performance of the joinery and its paint system obtained from field experience and testing. The contributions to the long-term performance of the coated joinery from component design and construction, paint formulation, and paint film thickness will be considered.

The story of World Surface Coatings Abstracts (WSCA) from its inception in 1928 as ‘Review of Current Literature relating to the Paint, Colour, Varnish and Allied Industries’ to the present day is described. Changes in production methods over the years are highlighted, with major changes having occurred since computerisation in 1976. Developments in relation to indexes, on-line, CD-ROM, and other formats are described. Coverage of the journal, which ranges from raw materials, through coatings types and properties, to health and safety regulations, business information etc, is also indicated, and examples are provided of topics appearing in the earlier years.

Abstract An instrument to undertake grazing incident EXAFS has been developed. This is discussed along with some applications of its use on industrially important systems.

One of the most valued properties of a paint is durability. A car is expected to retain the showroom finish for as long as possible and the time and expense involved in the exterior painting of houses is such that most people prefer not to have to repeat the exercise for a good many years.

The conditions pertaining to refractory structures are examined for the purposes of specifying engineering data. A comparison between service conditions and those that are prescribed in National Standards — traditionally used for measuring engineering data — shows clear differences. The influence of these differences are studied in simulative experiments on two of the most important properties, thermal expansion and modulus of elasticity. A theoretical model for cylindrical structures, modified to take account of conditions that exist in service, is briefly delineated. This model is employed to illustrate the significance of data derived by simulative and traditional procedures. Several examples are given of how changes in structural design affect the stresses in refractory linings and retaining steelwork. A rig designed to verify the validity of the measured engineering data and the theoretical model is described. Areas where further research and development should be directed are highlighted.
