Evidence of Completion of Milestone 3: Experimental Testbed
A Lifetime Extended Energy Management Strategy for Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles via Self-Learning Fuzzy Reinforcement Learning
Modeling difficulty, time-varying model, and uncertain external inputs are the main challenges for energy management of fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles. In the paper, a fuzzy reinforcement learning-based energy management strategy for fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles is proposed to reduce fuel consumption, maintain the batteries' long-term operation, and extend the lifetime of the fuel cells system. Fuzzy Q-learning is a model-free reinforcement learning that can learn itself by interacting with the environment, so there is no need for modeling the fuel cells system. In addition, frequent startup of the fuel cells will reduce the remaining useful life of the fuel cells system. The proposed method suppresses frequent fuel cells startup by considering the penalty for the times of fuel cell startups in the reward of reinforcement learning. Moreover, applying fuzzy logic to approximate the value function in Q-Learning can solve continuous state and action space problems. Finally, a python-based training and testing platform verify the effectiveness and self-learning improvement of the proposed method under conditions of initial state change, model change and driving condition change.
Read moreA synthesis and review of exacerbated inequities from the February 2021 winter storm (Uri) in Texas and the risks moving forward
A severe winter storm in February 2021 impacted multiple infrastructure systems in Texas, leaving over 13 million people without electricity and/or water, potentially $100 billion in economic damages, and almost 250 lives lost. While the entire state was impacted by temperatures up to 10 °C colder than expected for this time of year, as well as levels of snow and ice accumulation not observed in decades, the responses and outcomes from communities were inconsistent and exacerbated prevailing social and infrastructure inequities that are still impacting those communities. In this contribution, we synthesize a subset of multiple documented inequities stemming from the interdependence of the water, housing, transportation, and communication sectors with the energy sector, and present a summary of actions to address the interdependency of infrastructure system inequities.

When the fertilizer urea (CO(NH2)2) is applied in the soil there are amounts of nitrogen (N) contained in this fertilizer that are released into the atmosphere by ammonia (NH3) volatilization, which results in production consequences. The objective of this study was to determine the sensitization of the volatilization of N present in NH3 and the dynamics of the biochemistry of urea hydrolysis caused by the urease enzyme under different temperatures, fertilizer concentrations and soil types. The relevance of this academic work lies in the fact that knowing this process helps in understanding the damage brought to the plantation by N volatilization due to relevant losses of NH3 led by such hydrolysis. This volatilization is more intense in hot and humid environmental conditions which leads to some loss of efficiency of the CO(NH2)2 applied as well as N assimilation by the soil which generates higher planting costs. A laboratory study was conducted to point out the losses of N in NH3 and the urease activity in two tropical soil textures: Franco argiloso arenosa and Franco arenoso (Latosols). The samples were incubated at four temperatures: 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C. At each of these temperatures, tests were performed with different amounts of CO(NH2)2 powder incorporated to the soil volume: 0; 2.5 and 5.0 mg/g. Depending on the analysis performed, the time of incubation of the samples was six or ten days. During the incubation period, enzyme activity, ammonium (NH4) determination, pH, and NH3 volatilization were measured. The values found show that higher doses of CO(NH2)2 present higher results in both types of soils analyzed. The urease activity was higher at 25 °C. Between 30 °C and 35°C there was a greater availability of NH4 together with the greatest losses by volatilization in a short period of time. The pH, on the other hand, showed a constant alteration during the temperature variation and the presence of the fertilizer, with the pH at 35 °C becoming slightly outstanding only in the Franco arenoso texture soil. The maximum peak of NH3 volatilization preceded the enzymatic upper point, which is explained by the interaction of this gas with the soil constituents reacting with the acidic environment and with the soil microbiota, boosting the urease activity and the NH4 concentration, leaving the portion of the fertilizer lost in the form of NH3.

The goal of the project was to develop data to be used for modeling the dynamic characteristics of smart inverters. The inverters were tested in both a lab setting, and a subset was deployed in residential homes for longer term data collection during real-world use. LABORATORY TESTING Develop Test ProtocolPecan Street developed and wrote the protocol to test inverter functions. The protocol provided an overview and methodology for testing the combined output of California Rule 21 compliant residential string smart inverters. The intent of the testing was to provide researchers with the information required to model the response of the inverters to grid events or agreed control calls.Ranked in order of priority, the test protocol covered: (1) Volt/VAR compensation, (2) Volt/Watt compensation, (3) Grid Fault Recover Ramp Rate, (4) Normal Operation Ramp Rate, (5) Fixed VAR, (6) Voltage Ride Through, and (7) Frequency Ride Through. This included the solar irradiance simulation parameters as well as the smart inverter functions. The testing was completed using multiple measurement instruments including a Power Standards Laboratory PMU, National Instruments (NI) Compact Rio chassis and eGauge dataloggers. The document and testing were limited to residential smart inverters based on Fronius and SMA due to their relatively comprehensive set of programmable functions either through MODBUS interface or the front panel controls of the units. Please find the approved test plan and equipment list in Appendix A. Set Up Test EnvironmentFour inverters were installed at the Pecan Street Lab for testing with Chroma Solar simulators: two Fronius Smart inverters (one Primo, one Galvo) and two SMA smart inverters (6.0kW and 7.0kW).The installation required updating the electrical service for our renewable connection, which was performed by Pecan Street's master electrician.Additionally, the inverters were configured so they could be connected to our existing solar arrays or the solar simulators. Two rotary split three-phase converters were installed to power the Chroma solar simulators. The simulators were installed and used to produce simulated solar curves ranging from cloudy to full sun days for the inverters.

About 20 Å of hafnium were deposited on silicon substrates using the electron beam evaporation technique. Two types of samples were investigated. In one type, the substrate was kept at the ambient temperature. After the deposition, the substrate temperature was increased to 100, 200, and 300∘C. In the other type, the substrate temperature was held fixed at some value during the deposition. For this type, the substrate temperatures used were 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 550, and 600∘C. The samples were characterized in situ by the technique of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. No trace of elemental hafnium is observed in the deposited overlayer. Also, there is no evidence of any chemical reactivity between the overlayer and the silicon substrate over the temperature range used. The hafnium overlayer shows a mixture of the dioxide and the suboxide. The ratio of the suboxide to dioxide is observed to be more in the first type of samples. The spectral data indicate that hafnium has a strong affinity for oxygen. The overlayer gets completely oxidized to form HfO2 at substrate temperature around 300∘C for the first type of samples and at substrate temperature greater than 550∘C for the second type.
