Space, the final frontier… In the context of homeland security and emergency management, space technology, capabilities, applications, systems, services, and innovations represent the cutting edge of technological development and achievement for the homeland security enterprise. Homeland Security Space is examined from the lens of (1) Capabilities, Applications, Policy and Defense Implications, (2) Climate Change, Space Security, and Emergency Management, (3) Commercial Space, and (4) Military Satellites and Historical Defense Perspectives for Homeland Security. A holistic view of homeland security space is presented, with discussion on present, near future and future capabilities, applications, opportunities, challenges, and issues. Examining the concept of Homeland Security Space requires attention to space technology capabilities, programs, policies, applications, and their impacts in the homeland security enterprise. Climate change, for example, relies heavily upon space security to understand the implications on human safety and the role emergency management plays in using space technology in its mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. The developing technology in space satellite imagery and the emerging capabilities provide opportunities for new uses across the homeland security and emergency management enterprises. As this information is presented, it is important to demonstrate the evolution of space technology from a historical perspective while understanding the role the nation’s defense plays in securing the homeland security enterprise as a whole.

Abstract This chapter describes a long‐term successful transfer partnership between Pikes Peak Community College (PPCC) and the University of Colorado‐Colorado Springs (UCCS). The Best Choices program provides clearly defined pathways for students planning on transferring from PPCC to UCCS, including overall transfer plans that extend from start to finish.

This article discusses the development, implementation, and evaluation of a tiered internship program for undergraduate students in geospatial science and technology (TIMSGeoTech). The internship program assists education programs in providing skill development that is relevant and useful, and it aligns graduates and their skills with industry needs, through internship experiences. The unique internship tiers clarify the United States Department of Labor’s requirements on geospatial technician competencies and preparation. The vibrant internship process and its thorough evaluation improve the relevance of coursework to today’s geospatial applications and competencies, student academic performance, student retention and graduation rates, and employer’s satisfaction.
