The creation of a product design almost always involves competing visions within the team. Business, engineering, and design all have views on what makes for a successful product. News flash: The user should be the winner in that battle. If you are a consumer, you want this human factors engineer to be on the design team.

To date, there has been little empirical evidence to support the broader use of value-based insurance design, which lowers copayments for services with high value relative to their costs. To address this lack of data, we evaluated the impact of the value-based insurance program of a US corporation, Pitney Bowes. The program eliminated copayments for cholesterol-lowering statins and reduced them for clopidogrel, a blood clot inhibitor. We found that the policy was associated with an immediate 2.8percent increase in adherence to statins relative to controls, which was maintained for the subsequent year. For clopidogrel, the policy was associated with an immediate stabilizing of the adherence rate and a four-percentage-point difference between intervention and control subjects a year later. Our study thus provides an empirical basis for the use of this approach to improve the quality of health care.

There is significant frustration among business leaders and CIOs concerning the success of their systems in the field. There is an equal frustration among HCI professionals at the marginalized role that usability often plays in systems development efforts. These frustrations are, to a large extent, two sides of the same coin. This panel will consider how CIOs manage the apparently competing challenges of faster/better/cheaper systems and the time and money required for developing highly usable systems. They will discuss the strategies and techniques that they use to integrate usability into systems design and development.

The implementation of the concept of work sharing has proven to be mutually beneficial to both mailers and posts. A successful work sharing partnership requires quantitative benefit-cost analysis models that indicate that it is economically effective for both parties to participate. This paper discusses the opportunity for information-rich mail to provide efficiencies in work sharing and reducing transaction costs associated with certain types of mailings.

Abstract An increasingly important corporate goal has been the development of a process for product architecture which will allow businesses to provide compatible and complimentary products to customers, while increasing the efficiency of the product development cycle and reducing operational and component costs. This paper addresses a process and an automated mechanism for achievement of these goals.

Abstract Object oriented methodologies have traditionally been applied to software analysis and design and have been successfully implemented in languages such as C++. This paper addresses the approach, benefits and lessons learned in the application of an object oriented methodology to a highly complex, commercial‐based product development. Utilization of the methodology was effective in providing an environment for capturing all system requirements and performing an orderly analysis. This effort has led to the concept of “Reusable Requirements”.

Abstract Experimental results are presented, on a round-robin basis, to study the effect of vibrational frequency on the dynamic shear moduli of two metals, Inconel 600 and Incoloy 907. Four separate laboratories, each using a different experimental technique, obtained results over the nominal frequency range of 7 kHz to 10 MHz. A brief discussion and comparison of the four techniques, both resonant and pulse, are included. No significant differences were observed for each alloy's modulus over this frequency range.
