his article aims to analyze the structure and evolution of the Late Ottoman media landscape through an examination of suicide news reports in the late nineteenth century. During this period, newspapers, a new Western media tool, were rapidly adopted by both state authorities seeking to inform the public and Ottoman intellectuals aiming to educate the masses. Investigating how suicide was represented provides a unique lens to understand emerging journalistic norms and narrative strategies. This study investigates nineteenth century Ottoman Turkish newspapers using the Wikilala and Müteferriqa databases. Through a query for the keyword 'intihar' (suicide), 124 news reports were identified and analyzed. These texts were drawn from 11 different newspapers published from mid to late nineteenth century. The analysis demonstrates that question of what these representations reveal about the Ottoman press during the late nineteenth century. The findings of the study seek not only to establish how the media constructed the discourse around suicide but also to shed light on the role and development of journalism as an institution in the late Ottoman Empire, serving as a case study for media history. The study shows that the late Ottoman press constructed suicide through two main discursive modes: foreign cases served as a safe arena for critique and sensationalism, while domestic cases were reported as concise factual notices with minimal interpretation. Although explicit discriminatory language is absent, the framing of motives reflects gendered and social norms, attributing men’s suicides to economic or moral strain and women’s to honor or emotional distress.

Uluslararası Kızılhaç Komitesi, Osmanlı Hilâl-i Ahmer Cemiyeti ve Milletler Cemiyeti yetkililerinin yoğun uğraşları sonucunda Haziran 1922’de esir Türkler İstanbul’a dönebilmişlerdir.

The pathways to violence in women—especially in non-Western contexts—remain underexplored. This study examines the relationship between emotion regulation difficulties, criminal thinking, and aggression among 114 incarcerated Turkish women convicted of violent offenses (i.e., assault, murder/manslaughter, bodily harm, etc.). The mean age of the sample is 35.67 (SD = 9.66). Half of the sample (50 %, N = 58) has a maximum educational level of primary school qualification, and 30 % are unemployed. Drawing on the General Aggression Model and criminal thinking framework, the participants were administered the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), the Buss–Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ), and the Criminal Thinking Scale (CTS). Results revealed significant positive associations between emotion regulation difficulties and all subtypes of aggression, yielding correlation coefficients ranging from 0.25 to 0.62. Furthermore, while offenders scored lower than university students on emotion dysregulation and aggression, they scored higher compared to age-matched community samples—highlighting the importance of contextual comparison. Mediation analysis demonstrated that criminal thinking partially mediated the relationship between emotion regulation difficulties and aggression, suggesting that cognitive distortions amplify the effect of affective dysregulation on violent behaviour. These findings underscore the interplay between affective dysregulation and cognitive distortions in female violence and suggest that gender-responsive, trauma-informed interventions must integrate cognitive restructuring alongside emotional regulation skills to effectively reduce female violent offending. The current study advances our understanding of female violence by integrating emotional, cognitive, and sociocultural perspectives within a non-Western context. • Criminal thinking partially mediates the link between emotion regulation and aggression in Turkish female violent offenders. • Offenders scored higher on aggression than age-matched community women but lower than university students. • Emotion regulation difficulties and criminal thinking together explain over half of aggression variance. • Study emphasizes the need for gender-responsive, trauma-informed cognitive-behavioural interventions. • Findings address a critical gap by focusing on female violent offenders in a non-Western context.

This research, which aims to examine perceptions of xenophobia among citizens of the Republic of Turkey in the context of increasing immigration over the past fifteen years, focuses on the young female population residing in Ankara. In this regard, face-to-face interviews were conducted with women aged 18-35 in Ankara using semi-structured questions and the collected data was analysed thematically by using the MAXQDA 24 software. Findings indicate that the young women residing in Ankara exhibit a significant degree of xenophobia attitudes. The underelying reasons for this xenophobia attitudes are expressed through rational justifications. It argues that cohabitation under current conditions depends on the effective integration of migrants within the framework of social cohesion. It is understood that xenophobia would significantly diminish if integration and cultural adaptation were successfully achieved. Therefore, the most striking aspect of the participants' views is not the presence of foreigners, but rather the perceived inability of foreigners to integrate into Turkish society.

Hot air balloons play a significant role in tourism in Türkiye. Despite offering a unique experience, they are also associated with a relatively high risk of accidents. According to the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (2024), hot air balloon accidents account for 36% of aviation incidents, highlighting the need for closer examination of these occurrences. Since human factors constitute the dominant contributory element in aviation accidents, it is crucial to analyze hot air balloon incidents from this perspective. This study examines two serious hot air balloon accidents in Türkiye that occurred between 2021 and 2024, focusing on the human factors involved. Using a mixed methodology, including the 5 Whys Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS), the research investigates systemic issues. Data were collected from official accident reports published by the Transport Safety Investigation Center under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Türkiye. The analysis reveals significant patterns in decision-making errors, insufficient meteorological assessments, inadequate training, and organizational shortcomings. The findings show that both accidents were driven by systemic failures rather than pilot error alone. These included issues with organizational processes, supervisory oversight, and safety culture. The study emphasizes the need for improved meteorological systems, better training for adverse weather conditions, and enhanced safety management practices that stress the importance of a proactive safety culture and stronger operational planning to address human factors and reduce risks in hot air balloon operations.

This chapter explores the distinction between subcultures and Internet aesthetics through the lens of authenticity, resistance, and cultural meaning-making. While subcultures emerged as collective, oppositional formations grounded in shared experiences and ideological critique, Internet aesthetics function within platform-driven, hyper-visual environments shaped by algorithmic visibility and aesthetic allure. The chapter argues that Internet aesthetics lack the symbolic depth and disruptive potential of subcultures, resulting in depoliticized youth. Youth identities are increasingly curated through aestheticized, consumable fragments of popular culture, favoring exhibition over resistance, sameness over difference. The logic of likes and algorithmic affirmation replaces political engagement, transforming digital spaces into loops of self-confirmation. Ultimately, the chapter contends that Internet aesthetics reflect a broader cultural shift toward passive identity performance within digital panopticons.

This chapter introduces techno-politics as a conceptual lens through which technology is understood not merely as a tool (techne) but as a world-creating force (poiesis). Drawing from thinkers such as Schmitt, Winner, Jasanoff, Latour, and Ellul, it shows how digital infrastructures restructure sovereignty, blur public-private boundaries, and generate new political orders. The rise of Big Tech as quasi-sovereign actors and the emergence of hybrid governance regimes illustrate how power now flows through code, platforms, and algorithms. Moving beyond regulation, the chapter proposes a poietic approach that treats technology as an ontological force, calling for governance models attuned to its generative capacities and civic responsibilities. By treating technology as an ontological force, the chapter advocates for security governance that addresses both generative potentials and emergent risks.

Bu çalışma, Fransa’nın kamu güvenliği politikalarını strateji belgeleri ve yasalar temelinde analiz ederek, güvenlik anlayışında öne çıkan temel eğilimleri ve kurumsal yönelimleri ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmanın genelinde tümevarımsal tematik analiz yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Yürütülen araştırma kapsamında, radikalleşme, terör, göç, siber tehditler ve kamu düzeni gibi güncel güvenlik başlıklarına odaklanan toplamda 7 ulusal strateji belgesi ve yasalar incelenmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında elde edilen 22 kod, içerik benzerlikleri ve politika belgelerinde tekrar eden yönelimler doğrultusunda 5 ana tema altında gruplandırılmıştır. Söz konusu temaları “Toplum Temelli Güvenlik ve Radikalleşme ile Mücadele”, “Kolluk Güçlerinin Modernizasyonu ve Kamu Düzeni”, “Dijital Güvenlik ve Siber Tehditlerle Mücadele”, “Göç Yönetimi ve Toplumsal Entegrasyon” ile “Kriz Yönetimi ve Ulusal Güvenlik Politikaları” şeklinde sıralamak mümkündür. Analiz bulguları, Fransa’nın kamu güvenliği anlayışının tarihsel olarak güçlü merkeziyetçi yönetim geleneğine dayandığını ve bireysel hak ve özgürlükler ile kamu düzeni arasındaki dengenin genellikle güvenlik lehine kurulduğunu göstermektedir. Güvenlik politikalarında yerel yönetimlerin ve sivil toplum kuruluşlarının süreçlere dâhil edilmesine rağmen karar alma yetkisinin büyük ölçüde merkezî hükûmette kaldığı görülmektedir. Çalışmanın literatüre katkısı, Fransa’nın kamu güvenliği politikalarını strateji belgeleri üzerinden tematik analizle inceleyerek, literatürdeki kavramsal ve tarihsel yaklaşımların ötesinde belge temelli, sistematik ve nesnel bir analiz modeli sunması olmuştur. Bu çerçevede çalışma, Fransa’nın kamu güvenliği stratejilerinde tarihsel süreklilik ile çağdaş tehdit algılarının birlikte şekillendirdiği karma bir güvenlik mimarisi ortaya koyduğunu göstermektedir.
