Metrology is the science of measurement and is key to the proper inspection of electric motors. These inspections include the mechanical measurement of the end bell and shaft journal bearing fits, shaft extension, frame, brackets, seals, etc. This paper will explore why collecting accurate measurements is important, and how that affects motor performance and long-term motor reliability. This paper will also review the selection of proper measuring equipment with respect to electric motors. Best practices and guidance for accurate and precise measurement are highlighted in the paper.

In this work, we present detailed high-voltage reliability qualification results for the industry's first 1250Vrated lateral GaN HEMT with significant transient overvoltage capability making it ideal for high-reliability industrial applications. Based on the PowiGaN™ technology platform of Power Integrations, the 1250V GaN cascode device shows stable off-state leakage beyond 2000V with a typical breakdown voltage of 2300 V. Results from high voltage off-state reliability stresses HTRB and H3TRB along with hard-switching DHTOL stress are discussed in detail, illustrating for the first time that lateral GaN HEMTs can be a realistic wide band-gap solution at this voltage level. Additionally, we have also demonstrated high-efficiency power supply operation at high-input voltages using a 1250V flyback switcher IC, confirming its readiness for real-world use.

Utilization of plasma gasification in waste to energy (WTE) is one of the novel applications of a technology that was introduced several decades ago. In this application, plasma arc gasifies the carbon-based part of waste materials such as municipal solid waste, sludge, agricultural waste, etc., and generates a synthetic gas which can be used to produce energy through reciprocating engine generators, gas turbines, and boilers. The noncarbon-based part of the waste materials form a vitrified glass and reusable metal. The goal of this study is to describe the basics of this technology, review the challenges and opportunities for implementation of plasma gas technology in WTE applications in the U.S., and provide a road map to eliminate current roadblocks for developing such projects.

The reliability of a mission critical facility such as a data center infrastructure is strongly influenced by decisions made during the design, modifications and upgrades of the electrical and mechanical systems. Deficiencies in design, affect all aspects of data center maintenance and operation and are increasingly more expensive to correct. Consequently, proper and failure-free design concept, has a crucial impact throughout the life of the data center. It is essential that suitable design processes being followed to minimize the possibility of operation failure and allow the design deficiencies being detected before the facility goes to live operation. One of the most important design decisions in any data center is the level of redundancy for its infrastructure systems. It is customary that "external redundancy", such as 2N systems, being treated as a superior type of redundancy, however, this may not be true for all systems, and there are cases that embedded redundancy provides greater reliability over redundancy at system level. The objective of this paper is reviewing those cases starting with mathematical proof along with detailed overview and two case studies.

We examined the potential vulnerabilities of pilots flying a mixed fleet of two different aircraft types. A “worst case” scenario was evaluated in which a pilot, flying one type exclusively, would need to fly the different type, after 6 months without any recurrency training on the latter. These circumstances invite negative transfer of habits in the “old” aircraft, to performance in the “new” aircraft”. Documents of both aircraft were evaluated to establish those aspects of design and procedures differences that invite such negative transfer; a list of 36 such “vulnerabilities” were identified. Then 40 active commercial airline pilots from a US carrier participated in an evaluation of such negative transfer between two different types within the fleet. The sample was divided into 2 groups each of which normally flew one of the types and not the other. After training on the “new” type, each pilot returned to either 3 or 6 months of flying exclusively with their “old” type, and then returned for simulator evaluations on the “new” type that were targeted to reveal the 36 vulnerabilities. Even with power-sensitive statistical analyses, only slight evidence for negative transfer was found. Those areas where such transfer did emerge were targeted for recommendations of either procedural harmonization or minor design changes.

The first integrated circuit to economically combine a 700 V, 3 Omega , high-speed power MOSFET switch with a full-function current programmed pulse width modulation control circuit is introduced. 60 W 220 VAC input and 30 W universal input flyback power supply designs are described.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>
