Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a remarkably multifaceted biomacromolecule, playing a role in regulating myriad biological processes such as wound healing, tissue regeneration, anti-inflammation, and immunomodulation. Crosslinked high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid hydrogels achieve higher molar concentrations, display slower degradation, and allow optimal tissue product diffusion, while harnessing the synergistic contribution of different-molecular-weight hyaluronans. A recent innovation in the world of hyaluronic acid synthesis is represented by NAHYCO® Hybrid Technology, a thermal process leading to hybrid cooperative hyaluronic acid complexes (HCC). This review summarizes the current literature on the in vitro studies and in vivo applications of HCC, from facial and body rejuvenation to future perspectives in skin wound healing, dermatology, and genitourinary pathologies.

Western countries are currently facing the public health challenge of a rapidly aging population and the associated challenge of providing long-term care services to meet its needs with a reduced working age population. As people age, they will increasingly require both health and social care services to maintain their quality of life and these will need to be integrated to provide cost-effective long-term care. The World Health Organization recommended in 2020 that all countries should have integrated long-term care strategies to better support their older populations. Japan, with the most rapidly ageing society in the world, started to address this challenge in the 1990s. In 2017, it introduced a national policy for integrated long-term health and social care services at a local geographical level for older people. England has recently embarked on its first plan aiming for the integration of services for older people. In this article, we compare these approaches to the integration of long-term care systems, including the strengths of each. The paper also considers the effects of historical, cultural and organizational factors and the emerging role of technology. Finally, we identify critical lessons that can inform strategy development in other countries, and highlight the need to provide more international comparisons.

This article reviews a Court of Protection case involving a woman, Ms X, with two severe medical conditions: anorexia nervosa and end-stage liver cirrhosis due to alcohol dependence. Each of these conditions alone warranted end-of-life care planning. When combined, they provided a far more unique and complex presentation because of the way they were intertwined. Ms X's life was in imminent danger. The Court implemented methodically the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. Ms X was assessed as lacking capacity to make decisions in relation to treatment for her anorexia. However, she retained capacity to make decisions regarding treatment for her liver disease and the continued harmful use of alcohol. The Court ruled that it was not in Ms X's best interests to be subject to further compulsory treatment for her anorexia, even though this may have prolonged her life. It was also in her best interests and lawful not to provide nutrition and hydration with which she did not comply.

In order to promote developmental outcomes with children and young people and to nurture their positive health and well-being in foster care, social workers and case managers are required to direct professional attention toward both the child or young person and her/his daily living environment(s)—at home, at school, and in the local neighborhoods in which they live. When viewed from an ecological perspective, foster care environments are represented conceptually as a nested cluster of settings ranging from immediate life spaces and networks of relationships in a foster home, at school, and in a neighborhood, to organizational contexts holding a statutory duty of care for children and young people assigned looked after status, along with national policies and statutes which frame foster-care environments. This article explores how social-work roles and tasks with children and young people in foster care change as Social Workers transition from case management roles within state, provincial, or local authority departments to become Supervising Social Workers, or Team Managers of Foster Carers, or Directors of foster care services.

I read with interest Christopher Buswell’s article ‘Home at last’ (July 2000). How we would all like to work in homes owned and run by a charity which can ‘top up’ payments from social services for those extras that we in the private sector would love to be able to offer our residents.

Abstract Wooldridgeite, ideally Na2(P2O7)2(H2O)10, orthorhombic, a = 11.938(1), b = 32.854(2), c = 11.017(1) Å , V = 4321.2(8) Å3, a:b:c = 0.3634:1:0.3353, space group Fdd2, Z = 8, is a new mineral from Judkins Quarry, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England. Associated minerals are calcite, chalcopyrite, bornite and baryte. It occurs as equant crystals forming rhombic dipyramids; no twinning was observed. It is transparent blue-green with a very pale-blue streak, a vitreous lustre, and does not fluoresce under long- or short-wave ultraviolet light. Wooldridgeite has a Mohs hardness of 2–3, is brittle with an irregular fracture, and has no cleavage. The calculated density is 2.279 g/cm3. In transmitted light, wooldridgeite is colourless, non-pleochroic, and shows no dispersion. It is biaxial negative with α = 1.508(1), β = 1.511(1), γ = 1.517(1), 2V(meas.) = 76.2(5), 2V(calc.) = 71(10)8, X = b, Y = c, Z = a. The strongest five reflections in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are [d(Å), (I), (hkl)]: 8.23(30)(040), 6.52(100)(131), 4.05(40)(260), 3.255(40)(262); 2.924(40)(371). Electron-microprobe analysis of wooldridgeite gave P2O5 39.37, CuO 20.24, MgO 0.24, CaO 7.73, Na2O 8.33, K2O 0.17, H2O(calc.) 24.72, sum 100.80 wt.%; the corresponding unit formula (based on 24 anions) is (Na1.96K0.03)Ca1.00(Cu1.85Mg0.04)P4.04O14(H2O)10 where the H2O groups were assigned from knowledge of the crystal structure; the infrared absorption spectrum also indicates the presence of H2O in the structure. The mineral is named for James Wooldridge (1923–1995), a fervent amateur mineral collector who discovered this mineral.
