Opsoclonus Myoclonus Ataxia Syndrome in the Setting of COVID-19 Infection.
A middle-aged man presented with imbalance and involuntary jerky movements of the body 3 weeks after initial recovery from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lung infection, diagnosed by positive high-resolution CT thorax (COVID Reporting and Data System 5) and reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) from nasal swab.He had opsoclonus, cortical myoclonus, and symmetric cerebellar ataxia of speech, limbs, trunk, and gait on examination 1 (video 1).His MRI brain with contrast, CSF examination, HIV, Venereal Disease Research Laboratory, autoimmune, and paraneoplastic panel (including anti-GAD, antinuclear antibodies, antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies, anti-Hu, anti-Yo, anti-Ri, anti-amphiphysin, anti-PNAM2-Ma2/Ta antibodies), metabolic functions (hemogram, hematocrit, glucose, thyroid, renal, hepatic functions, electrolytes, serum and urine osmolality), and repeat nasal COVID-19 RT-PCR were normal. He recovered after treatment consisting of IV methylprednisolone (1 g/d), sodium valproate (20 mg/kg/d), clonazepam (2 mg/d), and levetiracetam (2 g/d) in 1 week (video 2).Our case adds to the increasing list of novel neurologic manifestations occurring in the setting of 3
Read moreA life satisfaction approach to valuing the impact of health behaviours on subjective well-being
BackgroundIncreasingly, decision-makers are interested in understanding the returns on investments in programs and policies that promote health and prevent chronic diseases. While the costs of these programs are more easily quantified, many of the outcomes they aspire to achieve are intangible and lack obvious market values. The subjective well-being (SWB) method was developed to value a wide range of non-market goods, including health outcomes directly in monetary terms. This paper presents an application of the SWB approach to estimate the monetary value of health-promoting behaviours as the intermediate outcomes of health promotion and chronic disease prevention programs and policies.MethodsLife satisfaction (LS) was used as a proxy of individuals’ SWB. Based on the combined Canadian Community Health Survey 2009–10 data, we modeled LS as a function of income and healthy behaviours, controlling for the socio-demographic factors associated with LS at the individual level using ordinary least squares regression. Equivalent effects of income and healthy behaviours on LS derived from the models allowed us to estimate the trade-off between income and healthy behaviours.ResultsWe found that income and healthy behaviours were positively associated with LS. The values of increased physical activity, an additional daily serving of fruits/vegetables, and not smoking are respectively $631, $115 and $563 per week. These represent the amounts of additional weekly income required to maintain an individual at their level of LS in the absence of each of these behaviours.ConclusionsThe SWB method holds promise as a method to monetize the value of a range of non-market goods, including healthy behaviours for which market values do not exist. The SWB method can be applied efficiently and cost-effectively using readily available survey data.

There is, in the field of international trade law, growing debate over the impact of private sustainable standards (PSS) on trade. The poles of the new regulatory frameworks for international trade are increasingly concentrated outside multilateral fora such as the World Trade Organization. The inaction of state actors in global spheres in the face of immediate market and consumer demands has given rise to sustainability standards issued by private entities. PSS are de facto mandatory standards and have positive and negative effects on trade a fact that is observed in the production and trade of Brazilian ethanol to the world. There are, nonetheless, no clear international fora for resolving litigation and trade barriers that may arise from the proliferation of these standards into the world. The work is divided into four parts. The first will discuss, in the international arena, whether there is definition and classification of private standards, and the ways in which the standards can be applied as unnecessary barriers to trade. The second part clarifies the relevance of ethanol for Brazilian exports and defines the selection of parameters for the empirical legal analysis of nongovernmental entities that issue PSS that focus on the product in question. The third part addresses in a transversal way the data obtained by analysis of the standards. The fourth and final part focuses on the normative treatment of private standards within the WTO, assessing whether the direct and indirect State responsibility over the effects of the PSS is possible through the interpretation of the SPS, TBT and GATT Agreements, in line with the jurisprudence of the Dispute Settlement Body.

How regulators can calibrate policies to mitigate exposures ? ».

Foliar and postharvest applications of phosphite (Phi)-based fungicides are used to control the oomycete Phytophthora infestans which is responsible for the occurrence of late blight in potatoes. Optimisation of the usage of Phi-based fungicides for disease control during the growing season and in subsequent storage can lead to improved potato production and processing quality. In order to assess the efficiency of Phi translocation to tubers, following foliar and postharvest treatments of potato crops with the Phi-based fungicides, the amount of Phi in tubers was determined by a high-performance ion chromatography method. The quantity of Phi found in tubers increased with the total amount of Phi-based fungicides applied during the growing season. Foliar applications of Phi resulted in an uneven distribution of Phi in the three tuber regions analysed, with high concentrations being identified in the tuber cortex (32.5–166.4 µg g−1 fresh tissue) and medulla regions followed by the skin area. Postharvest treatment of tubers led to a different distribution of Phi, with the highest concentrations of Phi found in the skin (411.0–876.6 µg g−1 fresh tissue) followed by the cortex and medulla regions. As foliar treatments are essential to protect the aerial parts of the plants during the growth season, the best disease management practices of tubers should include the postharvest treatment in addition to foliar applications. The use of both types of treatments ensures that concentrations of Phi in excess of 100 µg g−1 fresh tissue are present in tuber skin and cortex areas; such concentrations are needed to suppress the growth of P. infestans on tubers during storage.
