Breast cancer (BC) affects women's physical and psychological well-being. Expressive writing (EW) interventions show promise for BC symptoms but have inconclusive impacts on quality of life (QOL). This review evaluated the effect of EW interventions in patients with BC on QOL, intrusive thoughts, benefit finding, post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, anxiety, and depression. Seven English and two Chinese databases were searched for articles published through August 2023. Two researchers reviewed studies, extracted data, and evaluated risk of bias. The review included 24 studies (22 in meta-analysis). EW significantly improved QOL, benefit finding, intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and depression but had no effect on post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. Subgroup analysis showed that longer-term follow-up, as well as certain types of EW intervention, had better effects. EW had better effects for BC survivors than patients receiving chemotherapy. EW interventions positively affect QOL in patients with BC. This study provides evidence for using EW interventions in patients with BC.

Introduction: Intraocular lens (IOL) mislabeling is an exceptionally rare yet consequential manufacturing error. In this case, it was identified as the cause of a significant postoperative myopic shift. The diagnostic approach, integrating anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and ex vivo lens analysis, proved essential in reconciling the discrepancy between predicted and observed refractive outcomes. Patient and Clinical Findings: A 57-year-old highly myopic patient with a history of retinal detachment in the right eye underwent uneventful cataract surgery with the implantation of a +6.00 diopters (D) enhanced monofocal IOL (TECNIS Eyhance) in the right eye. Postoperatively, the patient exhibited an unexpected refraction of −13.00 D. Diagnosis, Intervention, and Outcomes: Surgical records confirmed correct IOL selection and implantation. AS-OCT imaging revealed a steeper optic profile than that expected for a low-diopter lens. Optical modeling estimated the lens power to be +18.43 D. The lens was explanted, and ex vivo lensometry confirmed its true power to be +21.00 D. Implantation of a correctly labeled +6.00 D IOL restored the intended refractive target, achieving a corrected distance visual acuity of logMAR 0.0. Conclusions: Although this case involved an extreme refractive surprise, IOL mislabeling should be considered in any unexpected postoperative refractive outcome, particularly when clinical findings and surgical records do not align. Advanced imaging and optical analyses may be key to confirming the diagnosis.

Split-pond systems (SPS) such as those used for catfish are being considered for raising baitfish. When using these systems for baitfish such as golden shiners Notemigonus crysoleucas, an important factor to be considered is how well the species can tolerate crowding, as the design mandates fish be confined to a smaller portion of the pond. Another aspect of the SPS design is the water flow between the two units for at least 10–14 h each day. SPS can be successfully implemented for other species if factors such as crowding, and water flow do not affect growth. Two laboratory studies were conducted each using 12, 40-L tank flow-through system to observe the growth and physiological performance of golden shiners held for 28 days at three crowding densities: 600; 1,200, and 2,400 fish/m3, keeping water flow at 1 cm/s (Experiment 1) and using three flow rates: 1, 2, and 4 cm/s at similar densities (600 fish/m3) (Experiment 2). At the end of the experiments, fish were subject to acute 1-min confinement stress and whole-body cortisol was measured at 30 min intervals for up to 2 h to monitor the secretion pattern and recovery. Results from experiments showed no difference in the final weight, length, feed conversion, and survival among treatment groups; survival rates were lower in the flow study because of columnaris Flavobacterium covae infections. Baseline cortisol was also not different among the treatments. Cortisol increased 30 min after the acute stress and returned to near baseline in 2 h in the crowding study suggesting acclimation to the chronic stressor. However, in the flow study, cortisol remained elevated even after 2 h, and hence a compromised pathophysiological response. Crowding and water flow do not impair feed intake, growth, or survival in golden shiners, and in these aspects may be a suitable species for SPS.

Abstract Using population estimates that were made regularly between 2001 and 2013, the state of recovery of arapaima populations and their IUCN conservation status were assessed after they were almost extirpated from the upper Essequibo basin, Guyana. Recovery rates were compared across multiple areas with different degrees of access by fishers to evaluate effectiveness of conservation efforts. Population estimates were also used to investigate the influence of environmental factors on arapaima abundance in lakes with different morphometries, vegetation, and water types and to determine the relationship between the numbers of spawning individuals and subsequent recruits (at about age 2 years). The most recent census conducted in November–December of 2013 indicated a 5.6‐fold increase in overall abundance compared with 2001, with 4,591 individuals, of which 1,932 were juveniles (1.0–1.5 m total length) and 2,659 adults. Assessment of conservation status following IUCN criteria indicated that arapaima populations in the upper Essequibo basin in 2001 would have been considered borderline Critically Endangered, but in 2013 after conservation interventions, status would be categorized as Near Threatened. Arapaima in the Essequibo basin appear to favour larger but shallow lakes with low conductivity, clear water, and abundant aquatic macrophytes. Stock–recruitment relationships suggest that the entire upper Essequibo basin population may still be growing and that there is approximately a 1:1 juvenile to adult ratio. This ratio of juveniles to adults across all areas suggests a paucity of young fishes to sustain overall population growth, which might reflect widespread illegal removals of young fishes in the basin. Comparisons of arapaima densities in the upper Essequibo basin with those at four localities across the Amazon Basin, suggest that with enhanced conservation efforts in the Essequibo, populations could potentially increase two‐fold or more.

Finite-element calculations of electromagnetic eigenvalues are known to converge to the exact solutions in the limit of vanishing element sizes. In an extension of previous work (Mehl 2009 Metrologia 46 554–9) the eigenfrequencies of the TM1n and TE1n (n = 1, 2, ··· 6) modes of triaxial ellipsoids were calculated as a function of mesh size. Higher-accuracy eigenvalues were obtained through a limiting process as the mesh size was reduced; the extrapolation was based on the theoretical convergence rate. The difference between the finite-element eigenfrequencies and the eigenfrequencies predicted by shape perturbation theory is found to be proportional to the cube of the fractional deformation parameter ϵ for all investigated modes. For ellipsoids with axes proportional to 1 : 1.0005 : 1.0010, the cubic term represents a fractional perturbation of the average TM16 eigenvalue k2 by −0.16 × 10 − 6 and the average TE16 eigenvalue by −0.22 × 10 − 6. This work adds support to the correctness of the analytic second-order formula derived in the previous work, and also demonstrates the usefulness of finite-element methods for investigating the quasi-spherical resonators (QSRs) used in measurements of the Boltzmann constant. In principle, the method can be extended to QSRs whose shape differs from triaxial ellipsoids.
