As the cost of pure terrestrial coverage will be likely unbearable with increasing capacity needs for rural, remote, and even urban areas, satellite communications are envisaged to play a significant role in the 5G ecosystem in providing ubiquitous coverage, broadcast/multicast services, and an in-herent robustness for emergency/disaster recovery. In this perspective both Geosynchronous Orbit and Low Earth Orbit constellations have been considered for development and early stage deployment. When looking at the satellite payload, an appealing solution exploits semi-transparent transponders that rely on Digital Transparent Processors (DTP). These kinds of transponders may provide adequate flexibility with respect to evolving standards and adaptation with respect to time varying traffic patterns. Within a years-long track of research carried out by the authors, the present paper aims at extending the modelling approach already proposed for accurate and cost-effective design of DTP by also incorporating dynamic power consumption of hardware architectures. The novel design flow, that spans from link level analysis to the detailed definition of hardware architectures of all sub-systems in the DTP chain, is then presented and validated for some significant setups. Numerical results are then provided and compared with those obtained from a VHDL implementation related to a Xilinx FPGA platform, showing a very promising agreement (in the range of 3–29 percent) for all the blocks composing the DTP chain. This proves the consistence and the relevance of the proposed design approach. In particular, in the perspective of efficient design of payloads for large constellations of small satellites, the proposed approach is ready to enable definition and handling of ambitious optimization frameworks.

Review of ACS, of existing transport protocols, application protocols, railway applications The adaptable communication system has been designed to operate in accordance with the bearer independence principle. This is achieved using communication technologies that can be accessed at IP protocol level. In this deliverable we provide a review of the most important transport and application protocols on IP for ACS communications.

The Edge Cloud Computing (ECC) paradigm is rapidly imposing itself in telecommunications networks since when services such as 4K/8K video streaming, 360 degrees augmented/virtual reality, and autonomous driving started appearing on the horizon. This paper provides some case studies on performance improvement and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) saving which can be achieved with ECC. It discusses the basic rationale for the ECC being the solution to improve KPIs in ultra-broad-band networks, and then it provides examples of performance and cost evaluation based on simulations.

This paper demonstrates the use of SBAS, supported by a limited number of local-area reference receivers, as the primary source of corrections and integrity verification for the use of GNSS to replace fixed transponders in the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The recent RHINOS project has demonstrated how a trackside network of local-area differential GNSS (LADGNSS) reference receivers can provide corrections and integrity information in areas with no SBAS coverage. However, in locations where SBAS is available and provides good coverage, it can provide corrections and integrity of similar quality when supported by a much smaller network of local reference stations, making the overall ERTMS installation more cost-effective. This SBAS-based implementation is described and compared to the existing LADGNSS-based implementation developed in RHINOS.

This paper deals with the adoption of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) applications for the evolution of ERTMS (European Railway Traffic Management System) system. We have studied a solution to monitor the train integrity and to accurately locate the position where the last coach of the train is stopped when a failure causes the split of the train into two sections. Train integrity is mandatory for the introduction of the “moving block” functionality foreseen by ETCS (European Train Control System) Level 3 that will bring major long-term benefits in terms of maintenance and operational capacity. The novelty of our approach lies in the exploitation of the multi-constellation capability to fast detect the train split with the shortest distance between the departed train sections compatible with the highest safety conditions set by the ETCS standard. The results are presented in a parametric form by varying the number of constellations and the probability of false detection and missed detection.

Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the first fully IPbased 3GPP standard for wireless transmission system. Due to innovative features it is able to offer very high throughput (e.g. 100 Mbps in downlink) to end user. For this reason Mobile Network Operators (MNO) need to adopt efficient end-to-end QoS approach in order to improve service quality perceived by end user. This should be adopted especially in case of delay sensitive services carried out over LTE networks, like VoIP over LTE (VoLTE). Transmission conditions and network impairments are key negative factors that can affect service delivery and network management activities. This research paper analyzes the influence of link utilization and network congestion on end-to-end basis VoLTE performance. Different scenarios are simulated using OPNET Modeler software tool in a good way. Finally comparison among them is provided.

Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the capability to connect, communicate and remotely manage a large number of networked, automated devices via the Internet. IoT is becoming as part of daily life and aims to extend pervasive communication and networking anytime, anywhere with any device. In this context security requirements and architectures must be properly formulated, implemented in order to enforce the security policies during their life-cycle. This paper provides a survey and analysis of security in the area of IoT introducing an approach addressed to overcome the conventional security solutions and deploy a federated architecture for dynamic prevention, detection, diagnosis, isolation, and countermeasures against cyber attacks. Based on the analysis of the most common web services, the paper defines the security needs proposing a federated model to design an architecture for secure exchange of services in IoT paradigm.

This paper proposes a local augmentation and integrity monitoring network for railway and shows the obtained performances in terms of accuracy positioning in case of satellite faults. The simulations results show that the system can detect and discard the faulty satellite, still maintaining the accuracy on positioning acceptable. The work is inserted in the scenario of introduction and application of space technologies based on the ERTMS (European Railways Train Management System) architecture. It foresees to include the EGNOS-Galileo infrastructures in the train control system, with the aim at improving performance, enhancing safety and reducing the investments on the railways circuitry and its maintenance.

The permanent monitoring of structural behavior of monuments is a crucial target in the framework of cultural heritage preservation. The paper deals with the monitoring and static risk assessment using the technique of dynamic parameter measurement in a broad Wireless Sensors Network (WSN) system. The historical buildings exposed to the traffic vibration, which can induce stresses inside the material, as well as small seismic actions, are vulnerable. Then a permanent monitoring of the micro-shocks/vibrations is suggested to be applied to the most vulnerable monuments. The use of a WSN requires to provide a robust infrastructure to support the data collecting and decision making before, during, and after a crisis event. When a crisis occurs, through the use of such information collection methods an appropriate plan is dynamically instantiated with the specific details of the crisis.
