Bi-stable Composite Slit Tubes
The paper investigates a new deployable structure of tubular shape that can be rolled up, like a tape measure, and is stable in both the extended and rolled-up configurations. This behaviour is due to a particular type of composite construction, using an anti-symmetric laminate. A simple analytical framework that explains and predicts this behaviour is developed, assuming the deformation of the tube to be uniform. The bi-stability of many tubes that have been made and tested is correctly predicted.
