Understanding where blue carbon habitats occur and how they are affected by human activity contributes to effective management of natural carbon sinks. Here, we compiled geographical data for Sweden to map the distribution of coastal vegetated blue carbon (BC) habitats. The mapping effort focused on well-recognised (salt marshes and seagrass meadows) and emergent BC habitats (other rooted submerged macrophytes and forested wetlands). We also estimated the exposure to anthropogenic pressures on coastal BC habitats based on their proximity to land-based human activities, and subsequently, the portion of these BC habitats that were located within protected areas. The total area of BC habitats was estimated to around 1850 km2, corresponding to ca. 35% of the Swedish coast. Seagrass meadows and other rooted submerged macrophytes were dominating, covering about 1500 km2. Around 22% of the mapped BC habitats were expected to be exposed to high pressures from land-based human activities due to their location, while BC habitats within protected areas were often less exposed. This nationwide assessment of coastal vegetated BC habitats accentuates the need for strengthening conservation prioritisation to maximise the carbon storage potential of BC habitats.

This article investigates how officer esprit de corps was formed in the emerging interwar Finnish armed forces. The Finnish officer corps emerged during a devastating civil war from two competing groups: older Russian-educated and younger and more radical German-trained jaeger officers. Their relationship turned into a serious conflict during the 1920s. Mesolevel institutional cohesion has been sparsely examined in past scholarship, where corps esprit has usually been taken for granted. This article introduces the concept of intramilitary relations and presents seven sociological factors that can affect officer esprit de corps: ideology, identity, patronage, military experience, generation, class, and professional institutions. As intramilitary relations are closely linked to broader civil–military relations, the article also sheds light on to date largely underexplored Finnish civil–military relations. The Finnish case shows that while military institutions are crucial for esprit in the long run, without consensus, institutions can be used as instruments for power struggles and weaken cohesion.

BackgroundHaving a chronic disease such as multiple sclerosis (MS) may pose challenges for affected individuals in their work life. Given its progressive nature and wide range of symptoms, living with MS requires ongoing adaptation. In addition to work accommodations and support, individuals may develop their own strategies to manage their condition at work.ObjectivesTo explore experiences of people with MS (PwMS) in managing MS in the workplace, focusing on strategies they employ to facilitate their work lives and challenges they navigate.MethodsSemi-structured individual interviews were held with 16 working PwMS in Sweden. Interviews were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis.ResultsThree main themes were identified that highlight strategies for managing MS. The theme “Adapting to MS”, included statements on how self-reflection led to strategies more aligned with health needs and understanding the best practices and pitfalls of managing a chronic disease. “Taking responsibility in the workplace” described the participants’ commitment to protect their health at work, and efforts made to create an environment more conducive to MS, and last, “Approaching sustainability” included reports on making sustainable choices in relation to work life.ConclusionThis study provides insights into the experiences of those living and working with MS. The results demonstrate the active agency in managing their condition. PwMS employed various strategies; concentrating on adapting to MS mentally and practically, taking an active stance for their health, and making choices based not only on their current health status but also on potential future circumstances.

Amid the intensifying intertwining of criminal justice and migration control in the Nordic region (Aas, 2014), this article seeks to reanimate abolitionist conversations from within. Framed as a curated dialogue, we reflect on our relationships to abolition as activists, academics, writers, facilitators, and implicated subjects (Rothberg, 2019). Guided by the spirit of the djobbeur (Glissant, 1997), we come into coalition to deepen our understanding of abolition as an analytical framework and an organizing strategy. Our conversations move iteratively through three interlinked themes: Nordic exceptionalism, carceral feminism, and penal humanism, as we examine how justice is imagined and practiced in the Nordic context and beyond. Tapping into the possibilities of the otherwise, we explore alternatives to the punitive logics of the modern/colonial world, grounded in a vision of decolonial abolitionism. We conclude by emphasizing the importance of situating the Nordic within global entanglements; challenging exceptionalist narratives and affirming abolition as a continuous struggle grounded in connection and interdependence.

Crime scene examiners (CSEs) play a crucial yet understudied role in law enforcement, frequently exposed to traumatic material under demanding organizational conditions. While the psychological health of frontline police has been extensively investigated, little is known about the mental wellbeing of those working in forensic and crime scene units. This scoping review systematically maps the existing international literature on CSEs' mental health to identify key themes, knowledge gaps, and implications for practice. Following Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines, seven databases were searched, yielding 24 studies published between 2005 and 2025. The findings reveal that CSEs experience a distinct constellation of occupational stressors, including cumulative trauma exposure, organizational strain, and professional invisibility. Five overarching themes emerged: (1) occupational exposure to trauma and post-traumatic stress; (2) stress, anxiety, and related psychological outcomes; (3) lack of institutional and organizational support; (4) low forensic awareness and diminished role recognition; and (5) protective factors such as resilience, peer support, and humor. Despite recurrent exposure to death, violence, and emotionally charged scenes, many CSEs demonstrate adaptive coping and resilience, though often without formal support structures. The review highlights systemic deficiencies in leadership, debriefing, and psychological monitoring, which exacerbate mental health risks and may impair decision-making quality. Addressing the invisibility of forensic policing through trauma-informed leadership, structured mental health interventions, and enhanced forensic awareness is critical both for workforce sustainability and the reliability of justice processes.

Current knowledge of long-term mercury (Hg) deposition is predominantly based on studies from the Northern Hemisphere, leading to a geographical bias in the comprehension of the global Hg cycle. Aiming to contribute to fill this knowledge gap, our study presents a high-resolution Hg record of a seagrass Posidonia australis sedimentary archive encompassing the last 3300years in the Waychinicup estuary (Western Australia, WA). This setting is an ideal site for studying the natural Hg cycle, as it is located in the southwest of the state, outside the prevailing wind patterns that transport emissions from major Hg sources. Our results show that Hg concentrations fluctuated from ∼1300BCE to 100CE with a shift in the paleorecord around 350BCE, which could potentially be associated with an intensified El Niño Southern Oscillation period. From around 100 until ∼1880CE, the Hg concentration remained relatively constant (∼2μgkg-1) with an increase up to 8μgkg-1 from 1880CE until present. Although Hg accumulation doubled since European settlement in WA (from 2.4 to 4.8μgm-2yr-1), such an increase can be explained by enhanced organic carbon accumulation, rather than changes in external Hg fluxes. Therefore, our study showcases the importance of considering biogeochemical processes when reconstructing long-term Hg accumulation based on sedimentary archives. Furthermore, the results demonstrate the key role of seagrass meadows as natural paleoarchives of environmental contamination, providing valuable insights into human impacts on coastal areas and to establish pre-anthropogenic baseline metal concentrations.

This article explores a widening participation programme for adolescents, aged 12‐16, living in territorially stigmatised communities. The study focuses on a programme component in which university student ambassadors offer homework support. Drawing on Noddings’ ethics of care, Biesta’s concept of subjectification, and Bourdieu’s theory of social reproduction, the study examines how such programmes can foster motivation, self-efficacy, and well-being beyond simply increasing interest in higher education, while identifying challenges in sustaining motivation for continued studies. Based on field observations, interviews and focus groups, the analysis highlights that caring relationships, role models and locally anchored practices can play a central role in creating supportive spaces where students feel seen, safe and encouraged to engage academically. The findings also indicate that for encounters to develop into meaningful connections, both time and sustained engagement are essential. Student ambassadors play a crucial role in fostering trust-based interactions and opportunities for identification, which can strengthen aspirations and empower students. However, the study identifies two critical limitations: voluntary participation primarily engages already motivated students, while structural inequalities significantly constrain the programme’s transformative capacity. In conclusion, widening programmes can expand students’ horizons and support holistic development but their impact depends on the interplay of relational qualities, local anchoring and broader structural conditions, and the time needed for such relations to grow. The article concludes with recommendations for enhancing future programmes through culturally responsive practices, stronger community partnerships, and strategies to engage less motivated students.
