Effects of Active vs Passive Cool-Down on Ultra-Early Post-Exercise Haemodynamics in Healthy Young Men: A Preliminary Study
Objectives: This study investigated ultra-early effects of active cool-down (AC) and passive cool-down (PC) on post-exercise haemodynamics and cardiorespiratory responses in healthy young men, to inform strategies to reduce exercise-induced syncope. Methods: Seven healthy, non-athletic male students performed an incremental cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPX) on a cycle ergometer, followed immediately by either AC (pedalling at 20 W) or PC (sitting without pedalling). Respiratory gas exchange was recorded breath-by-breath and averaged every 3 seconds. Heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (VO₂), carbon dioxide output (VCO₂), and ventilation (VE) were measured at peak exercise and at 0, 3, and 6 seconds after the start of the cool-down. For descriptive purposes, responses up to 15 seconds were also plotted. Results: HR decreased significantly more during the first 3 seconds of recovery in PC than in AC (p = 0.03, d = 0.62). No significant differences in HR changes were observed between 3 and 6 seconds after cool-down initiation (p = 0.47). VO₂, VCO₂, and VE did not differ significantly between AC and PC at any of the measured time points (all p > 0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that PC immediately after exercise induces a more abrupt early decline in HR than AC, potentially delaying ultra-early haemodynamic stabilisation during a time window in which exercise-induced syncope may occur. Incorporating light active recovery may help support safer haemodynamic recovery following exercise. Given the small sample size, these results should be confirmed in larger studies. We have newly developed a four-antenna array type antenna-coupled electrode electro-optic phase modulator for the 80 GHz band to be used as an electric field sensor. The receiving antenna arrays of the EO sensor are fabricated on a z-cut LiNbO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf> film on a base substrate of SiO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> glass. The EO sensor can measure the electric field in the 80 GHz frequency band in both the frequency and time domains. In this paper, we show the receiving pattern of the EO sensor around 80 GHz. We demonstrate the possibility of measuring the vector radiation pattern of a standard gain horn antenna in the time domain and the frequency domain.

Read moreThe impact of exercise and psychotherapy on psychosocial outcomes for patients with chronic pain.
This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the characteristics of patients with chronic pain and differences in their responses to different treatment approaches. A retrospective review was performed regarding patients with chronic pain who visited an interdisciplinary pain treatment centre between January 1, 2018, and March 31, 2023. The patients were categorised into four groups based on the treatment received: a conventional therapy group treated by medical doctors, an exercise therapy group received additional exercise therapy, a psychotherapy group received additional psychotherapy, and an interdisciplinary treatment group received additional exercise therapy and psychotherapy. Responses to pain-related and psychosocial questionnaire results were compared between baseline and six months post-treatment. Of the 1,967 initial participants, 239 patients met the eligibility criteria and their data were included in the analysis. In the Conventional therapy group, the indicators showed improvement in pain symptoms, excluding the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Depression (HADS-D) scores. In the Exercise therapy group, significant improvements in PSEQ (from 28.15 to 33.34, p < 0.001) and HADS-D (from 7.17 to 6.35, p = 0.035) scores were documented. HADS-Anxiety scores decreased in the Psychotherapy group from 10.36 to 7.91 (p = 0.028). The Interdisciplinary treatment group showed a significant reduction in pain catastrophizing scale scores (from 35.15 to 26.31, p = 0.038). This study indicated that exercise therapy, psychotherapy, and interdisciplinary approaches might contribute to improvements in psychosocial outcomes amongst patients with chronic pain. Although the effects of exercise therapy were more consistent, psychotherapy and interdisciplinary treatment demonstrated potential benefits.

In this study, we developed a robot capable of flexibly adjusting its drilling posture through a roll rotation mechanism. As the aging of sewer pipes becomes an increasingly serious issue, the demand for technologies that enable efficient and precise repair work is growing. Conventional drilling robots require manual towing, placing a significant burden on workers. To address this issue, we developed a robot capable of active movement within pipes, stabilizing its posture during drilling by receiving reaction forces at the center of its body. This allows the robot to maintain a perpendicular posture relative to the drilling position. Experimental results confirmed that the robot can achieve both forward/reverse movement and roll rotation simultaneously.
Read moreDecay of seismic noise at shallow boreholes: Observations from Groningen.
Long-term seismic monitoring arrays are often deployed to shallow boreholes to reduce the seismic noise. We investigate noise level decay in shallow boreholes. A large number of publicly available data with such deployment is available at the seismic monitoring array near the town of Groningen, which allows also characterization of the seismic noise decay in shallow boreholes in urban environments. We study noise distribution at 4 sites from this array. Each site includes 5 receivers deployed in shallow vertical boreholes with 50 meters intervals between the surface and 200 m depth. We show there is no difference between noise levels during the summer and winter at the borehole instruments. However, we observe diurnal variation at all depth levels. We also show there are higher noise levels throughout weekdays and lower during weekends and state holidays. These changes are not only observed at the surface but also at the deepest receivers. This implies that the dominant source of this noise is anthropogenic and it penetrates to depths of 200 meters even at frequencies exceeding 5 Hz. This observation is contradicting the common assumption that the seismic noise consists of the surface waves.

In this study, we attempted to fabricate a microneedle device with a through-type transverse hole and a luer connector using only injection molding, aiming to lower the cost and improve the hermetic reliability of the microneedle compared to previous studies. In addition, a prototype of simpler puncture applicator was fabricated and evaluated. As a result, fabricated microneedles had very sharp tips and cleanly shaped transverse holes. Furthermore, the applicator was able to reliably puncture and inject the drug into the skin tissue. It was also confirmed that the microneedles were strong enough at this time.
