Masking the Inner Ocean: Proposing the Use of Mask in Igal Dance for the Next Phase of the Interipe Model
This paper proposes the integration of mask work within the next phase of the Inclusive Treatment Experimental Ritual Performance (In TERiPe) model - a culturally grounded therapeutic framework rooted in the Bajau-Sama Igal dance tradition. While the first two In TERiPe pilot workshops (2023–2025) with forty-one People with Different Abilities (PwDA) successfully explored the healing dimensions of Igal-dramatherapy without the use of masks, new insights from practice-based research suggest that masking can deepen emotional accessibility and symbolic transformation in participants. The proposed phase, supported by the Ministry of Education Malaysia grant (2025–2026), aims to develop and test mask-integrated movement sequences through smaller pilot rehearsals and at the International Mask Festival (IMF) 2025, leading up to a major inclusive workshop scheduled within nine months from August 2025. Drawing from theories of ritual performance, dramatherapy, and Southeast Asian aesthetics, this article articulates the cultural rationale, psychophysical potential, and humanistic implications of introducing masks into Igal-based therapy. It positions mask work as a bridge between tradition and innovation, body and psyche, personal emotion and communal empathy — proposing a new, inclusive grammar for Malaysian performing-arts-based therapy.
Read moreThe UK Tobacco Industry Interference Index 2023: A methodological approach
The UK Tobacco Industry Interference Index (UKTI) is part of the Global Tobacco Industry Interference Index (GTI). Based on a survey methodology developed by the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA), and published by the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC), the GTI is a global survey on how governments respond to tobacco industry interference and to what extent they protect their public health policies from the commercial and vested interests of the tobacco industry, as required under the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). Since the first GTI in 2019, the UKTI has been compiled by the Tobacco Control Research Group (TCRG) at the University of Bath. The latest UKTI, the fourth in the series, was published in November 2023. Monitoring, investigating and reporting on industry interference is complex, with large volumes of publicly available information found in multiple locations and formats. These include government sources such as lobbying registers, Hansard reports and registers of interests; tobacco industry sources such as company reports, websites and press releases; and external media including the industry and retail press. TCRG has implemented some innovative methods using a wide range of tools and resources, including open-source intelligence techniques (OSINT) and freedom of information requests (FOIs). These methods are outlined and critically assessed in this article. In doing so, we hope that lessons learned in the UK may be relevant to monitoring of tobacco industry interference elsewhere.
Read moreCombating Digital Defamation: Regulations, Challenges and Protecting Reputation
Indonesia regulates digital defamation through the ITE Law; however, the existing framework remains inadequate because it fails to achieve a balanced integration of reputation protection, freedom of expression, legal coherence, institutional coordination, and public awareness. This research aims to analyze regulatory inadequacies on digital defamation, identify weaknesses in the existing framework, and propose a justice-based reconstruction for Indonesia’s legal system. Employing a constructivist paradigm, this study adopts a socio-legal research approach with a descriptive type of analysis. Data were derived from secondary sources, including primary, secondary, and tertiary legal materials, collected through library research and analyzed qualitatively. The research demonstrates that Indonesia’s regulation of digital defamation remains unjust because it fails to adequately protect citizens’ right to express opinions without surveillance, restriction, or silencing. Substantively, lawmakers must critically reconsider Article 45 paragraph (4) of the ITE Law to ensure fair and consistent enforcement. Structurally, law enforcement institutions must strengthen coordination between the police, prosecutors, and judiciary to address weak institutional synergy. Culturally, policymakers and stakeholders must expand public dissemination of the ITE Law to improve legal understanding across society. Based on these findings, the study concludes that reconstructing the regulation of digital defamation requires embedding justice-oriented values into both legal norms and enforcement mechanisms, particularly through reforming Article 27A and Article 45 paragraph (5) of the ITE Law.
Read moreNon-intrusive load classification for energy management of electrical appliances using convolutional long-short term memory
Non-intrusive load classification (NILC) is a crucial technique in energy management, helping to reduce unnecessary energy consumption and support the development of smart buildings. However, accurately classifying devices with similar characteristics and handling the complexity of electrical signals remain significant challenges. This research presents a deep learning-based NILC designed to efficiently extract key features from energy data. The convolutional LSTM combines a residual block (RB) and squeeze-and-excitation (SE) layers within a convolutional neural network (CNN) to enhance feature extraction while minimizing information loss. It consists of three main convolutional blocks, each incorporating SE layers to improve feature attention, along with long-short-term memory (LSTM) to capture sequential dependencies, leading to improved classification accuracy. The proposed model is trained on datasets containing 2, 3, and 4-electrical appliance operation scenarios, with feature data transformed into kurtograms to enhance signal characteristics. The training results achieved peak accuracy scores of 98.08%, 99.96%, and 99.75% and precision scores of 99.96%, 95.65%, and 97.10% for the respective scenarios. These results highlight the effectiveness of NILM in optimizing household energy usage, marking a significant step toward developing advanced technologies that reduce energy costs, promote sustainable energy consumption, and enhance energy management in future smart homes.
