Angle-Dependent Mutual Coupling in Antenna Arrays by Electromagnetic Modelling of Sub-Volumes
The mutual coupling in antenna arrays for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radar is calculated using the far-field of specified sub-volumes in the antenna array structure. The far-field calculations are based on full wave simulations in CST Microwave studio using the transient solver. In this way the far-field radiation can be simulated from specified parts of the antenna structure. Based on these simulations, 3-dimensional mutual coupling coefficients can be estimated, and are in turn compared to an existing method estimating the mutual coupling matrix, which is not angle-dependent.
Read moreAssessing the Potential of Virtual Reality for Improving ESA’s Space Operations
Virtual reality (VR) provides an immersive virtual environment to users. VR users can enter and interact with VR environments in a natural way similar to interacting with the real world. VR offers promising features that could have the capability to improve present and future space operations in various areas. For exploiting the benefits offered by VR, the efficient integration of VR with operations data systems is crucial. In this paper, results of a study on the potential of improving ESA’s operations with the help of VR are presented. Results include conceptual use case and technology analyses as well as practical results from the implementation of a proof-of-concept (PoC) prototype.

Read moreA recursive kinematic random forest and alpha beta filter classifier for 2D radar tracks
In this work, we show that by using a recursive random forest together with an alpha beta filter classifier, it is possible to classify radar tracks from the tracks’ kinematic data. The kinematic data is from a 2D scanning radar without Doppler or height information. We use random forest as this classifier implicitly handles the uncertainty in the position measurements. As stationary targets can have an apparently high speed because of the measurement uncertainty, we use an alpha beta filter classifier to classify stationary targets from moving targets. We show an overall classification rate from simulated data at 82.6 % and from real-world data at 79.7 %. Additional to the confusion matrix, we also show recordings of real-world data.

Introduction: Balneotherapy has been defined recently as the use of natural mineral waters for medical purposes such as prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. This study aims to present and discuss the benefits of balneotherapy in the pathology of the otorhinolaryngology field. Materials and Methods: We performed a systematic review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and using the 5S model of evidence based on information services, described by Haynes. Moreover, we consulted relevant websites of several medical hydrology associations. Results: Nowadays, we have evidence for application of balneotherapy in diseases of ear, nose and throat. The most consistent findings consider the therapeutic role of sulfurous and salty waters on rhinitis and sinusitis in children and adults. Moreover, balneotherapy could also be used after functional endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis. Other notable role is the improvement of audiometric parameters in children with otitis media with effusion. Conclusions: The balneotherapy has proven scientific evidence and could be an excellent guideline therapeutic option. However, more randomized and controlled studies are needed.
Read moreThe building block approach to airborne pod structures
The certification and testing of new airborne structures is a costly undertaking. This paper presents which measures can be taken to limit the cost and certification required in order to improve the capabilities of the current airborne as-sets, by applying a building block approach to the design and certification of airborne pod structures. A simple way of improving aircraft capabilities is by adding external pod structures, which has been performed for many applications over many years. However, this paper describes a truly modular approach, in which a typical airborne pod structure may be reconfigured to many various roles, with only limited re-certification requirements. Using existing or general aerodynamic shapes, the basic outer shape for the external store is defined, which is then combined with a modular substructure which can accommodate a large variety of electronic and/or optical sensors. This also allows the airborne pod structure to perform several intelligence collecting operations during the same sortie, thereby limiting the time spent near the danger area. The re-use of existing substructure modules reduces the cost and leadtime of the design phase allowing for a rapid entry into service. The modular design, relying on proven interface systems between the building blocks, significantly reduces risk involved in new programs. The certification process is also discussed in order to optimize the use of the pod structure modularity and certification requirements in order to simplify the certification task, by drawing similarity to existing designs. Finally the paper covers how modularity is implemented in new composite pod designs with stealth capabilities.

Object-oriented analysis and design have been more concerned with system functionality, neglecting non-functional aspects; the result is code which is tangled and dicult to maintain, contradicting main principles of object orientation. Aspect Oriented Software Development (AOSD) proposes the early specification of non-functional requirements. However, a standard and homogenous vision of the AOSD terminology is still missing. The goal of this work is to integrate AOSD concepts, classic requirements engineering notions, and the new standard ISO/IEC 25030 on software quality requirements. The main result of this study is the REASQ (REquirements, Aspects and Software Quality) conceptual model, expressed in UML. All the modelling concepts are formalized into three related ontologies, representing the ambits of aspect-orientation, software quality and requirements engineering. The ontologies can be used as an umbrella to specify quality requirements in aspect-oriented engineering processes.
