How does newspaper-based event data compare to a government data source? While scholars have long recognized the importance of and biases present in newspaper-based event data, few studies have compared newspaper reports with official government data to better understand the severity and impact of such biases. We develop this comparison in the context of riots, a form of violent collective action that represents an important middle ground between peaceful protests and protracted civil conflict. Using newly collected police precinct-level government data from India, we compare these data to a high-quality newspaper source. Though similar at the aggregate level, newspaper riot reports correlate poorly with government data at the local level. We model the frequency of newspaper and government riot reports based on literacy, location, and other demographic characteristics to better understand the discrepancies between these two sources. We conclude that newspaper riot data does partially reflect aggregate riot trends, but the newspaper editorial process also plays an important role. Government data is better for within country comparisons and for analyzing event trends over time. Our findings suggest that using collective action event data from both sources may help ensure that results are not driven by biases in either data source.

As proposed by Linda B. Nilson in Specifications Grading: Restoring Rigor, Motivating Students, and Saving Faculty Time, Specifications Grading is an assessment paradigm that relies on pass/fail grading of assignments and assessments, the structuring of course content into modules linked to learning outcomes, and the bundling of assignments and assessments within those modules. One intention of this type of course grading construct is to align assessment more closely with student attainment of intended learning outcomes. Many of the features of Specifications Grading make it more equitable. While there has been very visible work in incorporating Specifications Grading in some academic areas (e.g., in mathematics), examples of the use of Specifications Grading in computer science courses are less common. The goal of this workshop is to introduce the concepts of Specifications Grading and explain how to apply these concepts to a wide range of computing courses and class sizes. Each participant should leave the workshop with the ability to revise their course syllabus and assignments to incorporate Specifications Grading. Access to many examples and resources will be provided.

The purpose of this study is the assessment of the moderating effects of consumers' likelihood to use instore technologies on the relationship between retailtainment value and satisfaction with retailtainment in physical grocery stores. A questionnaire designed to test our model was administered to 332 undergraduate students. The data were analyzed using AMOS-SEM. The results show that perceived benefit, enjoyment, and unique values of retailtainment were significant in explicating satisfaction with retailtainment. Regarding the interaction effects of likelihood to use instore technology, the results reveal the positive relationship between human interactivity-instore, benefits, and unique values, and the dependent variable satisfaction with retailtaiment are stronger for individuals with low likelihood to use instore technologies. Results confirmed that retailtainment, which provides enjoyment and perceived informative benefits in terms of experience with the consumption of products, is likely to increase satisfaction and improve loyalty as well as propensity to return to the store.

Recently, the Mexican government implemented a simple labeling system that would apply to 85% of the food products. The aim of the system is to report high amounts of calories, sugars, sodium, fats and trans fats. Labels are displayed on the front of the package individually or in groups. No studies have been conducted to analyze public attitudes toward the labeling system. In order to fill this gap, the purpose of the study is to conduct an exploratory analysis of the Mexican attitudes toward the new labeling system on Twitter. The Twitter API was used to collect tweets published between January 01, 2020 to June 30, 2021. QSR NVivo 12 software was used to conduct thematic content analysis. The emerged themes were related to consumer education, impact on the industry and businesses, and support or rejection to the labeling system. A category emerged as reflection of the unique cultural traditions.

Abstract Expanding on current research, this study finds that firms with better financial report readability demonstrate a stronger relationship between institutional blockholder monitoring and information asymmetry. This result supports our hypothesis that enhanced readability improves firm information and aids the institutional investor monitoring of firms, reducing information asymmetry. By demonstrating that readability amplifies the marginal effect of institutional blockholder monitoring, we highlight the significance and policy implications of better corporate disclosure readability.

As climate change continues to affect global temperatures, organisms will need to not only adapt but evolve to survive the changing climate conditions. Temperature selection experiments were performed on Pseudomonas fluorescens to select for growth at lower temperatures. The P. fluorescens temperature selection experiment selected for cells that can grow at a new minimum temperature which is over 20˚C lower than the optimal growth temperature (25-30˚C). Previous experiments established the low end of P. fluorescens’s growth temperature as 4˚C. The genomes of the newly selected and reference strains of P. fluorescens were sent for sequencing, and the results showed differences in protein sequence between the two strains. This experiment is a model for evolution as a result of gradual temperature change (similar to climate change) over generations, and the resulting genomic changes recorded show which protein families could evolve as an organism adapts to a gradually changing temperature.

Project management is critical component of the problem-solving process, and each project type from value perspective, needs a different style of project management in order to be successful. The value of a project, which is one of the major metrics determining the severity of the problem, should be clearly articulated by a project sponsors and/or stakeholders in the charter document, and Data Quality Objective document, which is more commonly used in the fundamental problem solving process. The project sponsor is the person who owns and provides funding, resources, and support for the project, whereas a stakeholder is an individual with an interest in the project and is affected by activity and outcome of the project. Project management techniques used in a time-control problem are slightly different from a crisis type problem. Projects initiated to work on money control problems are usually dealing with chronic plant issues.

ABSTRACT Using the Plain Writing Act (PWA) of October 2010 as a source of exogenous variation in 10-K readability, we examine whether improvements in 10-K reports enhance institutional investors’ monitoring of firm risk management. The results indicate that the negative association between monitoring institutional ownership and systematic risk is stronger when firms provide more readable 10-K reports. The impact of readability improvement on the relation between institutional monitoring and risk is more pronounced after the PWA. This finding confirms our hypothesis that improved readability provides institutional investors with more complete firm information with which to conduct their monitoring efforts, thus inducing more effective risk management.
