The Salvation Army

ABSTRACT This paper outlines the need for theological reflection on reconciliation within faith communities as returning Christians rejoin their churches following pandemic closures. Where there has been a suspension of gathered worship, there is an interruption of shared experience within the church congregation. Van der Borght (2008. “The Church as the Community of the Shared Story.” Journal of Reformed Theology 2 (1): 5–16.) has described church as ‘the community of the shared story’, and the warp and weft of these shared stories have been interrupted by lockdowns in the Church across the world. The move to electronic worship left some worshippers feeling doubly excluded. Those returning to worship are at new and differing points in their journey of faith as their local, gathered church resumes after one or more periods of lockdown. Given the prevalence of church closures during the COVID-19 pandemic, this interruption of shared experience is likely to have widespread pastoral consequences. This paper suggests that reconciliation is the appropriate, theological response.

Mfundisi-Holloway provides a political and historical analysis of President Frederick Chiluba’s tenure and Pentecostal involvement in matters of national interest. She demonstrates that Chiluba’s tenure coincided with the growth of Pentecostal churches within the country and their influence on Zambia’s religious culture. She argues that it was not the correlation between Chiluba’s political agenda and his personal beliefs that had an impact on the explosion of Pentecostal churches in Zambia and proposes that without Chiluba Pentecostal churches would have still grown due to the explosion of Pentecostal churches across the globe at that time. She highlights the growing visibility of Pentecostals in politics as well as on television as televangelists but not as much on matters of health care and social justice.

In this chapter, Mfundisi-Holloway provides an overview of Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity in Zambia and civic engagement. She maps Zambia’s religious landscape dating back to the late nineteenth century when Dr. David Livingstone a missionary and explorer came to Zambia. She demonstrates that the arrival of Pentecostalism in the mid-twentieth century helped to restore a spiritual connection that was downtrodden by missionaries and that its growth benefited from Zambia’s religious plurality.

The purpose of this article is to describe a collaborative community project designed to enhance the mental health and development of children experiencing family homelessness. In spite of the many risk factors faced by children without homes, there has been limited attention to understanding and addressing their needs. Community Action Targeting Children who are Homeless (CATCH) was developed by a group of community leaders in family homelessness and experts in young children's mental health; the goal of CATCH is to promote the social–emotional adjustment and developmental status of children who are homeless. In this article we provide a rationale for the project, discuss the goals and strategies implemented to meet those goals, and describe the lessons learned.

The 1998 Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) was developed between states and tobacco manufacturers to settle the states' lawsuits against tobacco manufacturers and recover tobacco health-related costs. States won billions of dollars and concessions regarding how tobacco products could be advertised. The purpose of the MSA was to prevent cigarette smoking and compensate for health expenses incurred in the treatment of tobacco smoking-related illnesses. Twelve years after the settlement, it is clear that MSA monies have been gravely diverted from tobacco prevention and cessation programs to balance budgets. The authors' review indicates that increases in funding for state tobacco prevention and cessation programs reduce tobacco use across all populations. Implications for social policy and social work practice are offered.
