Techniques of Monitoring Student Clinical Experience

Physician assistant (PA) programs were surveyed to determine how they were monitoring the clinical experience of their students. Results indicate that 26.7% of the 86 responding programs are using an electronic method of reporting student clinical experiences. Fifty-three percent plan to do so in the future. Only 10 programs (11.6%) found commercially available software that was suitable for monitoring clinical experiences. There is general agreement that data elements required for adequate monitoring include diagnoses, procedures, and level of student involvement. A need remains for software that will fully meet the needs of PA educators in monitoring student clinical experiences.
