Similarities and singularities of the data protection laws of the south American countries
This study explores the main convergences and singularities of data protection and privacy laws in South America. It begins with a historical overview of privacy rights, tracing their evolution from the foundational concept of the “right to be left alone” to the contemporary legal emphasis on consent, personal data lifecycle management, and information security. The research employs a qualitative methodology combining content analysis and the study of foreign law and using the ATLAS.ti software, the authors coded and analyzed privacy and data protection legislation from eight South American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. The findings reveal a significant degree of alignment among these laws, not only in common terminology such as data subject, controller, and data processing, but also in a shared normative core of principles and data subject rights. Despite these similarities, the study highlights key national distinctions. Brazil’s legislation uniquely defines the use of personal data in scientific research. Ecuadorian law stands out for recognizing the rights of deceased individuals and establishing certifying entities to oversee data protection compliance. In contrast, Paraguay's law is explicitly focused on personal credit data, reflecting a more limited scope. By comparing these regional legal frameworks, the article contributes to a deeper understanding of how global privacy standards are adapted within diverse national contexts in South America.

Building local infrastructures of care: social enterprises and the recomposition of social value
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how social enterprises build local infrastructures of care and (re)compose social value in contexts marked by institutional voids in Brazil’s Northeast. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a qualitative, multiple case study of five ventures operating in health, education, environment and agriculture. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, field visits and documentary evidence and analyzed via within- and cross-case coding to surface convergent and divergent patterns. Findings Across cases, ventures articulate clear social missions and deliver tailored services (e.g. disease awareness, arts-based education, recycling logistics and family-farming commercialization). They compensate for weak formal institutions through bricolage, partnerships, voluntarism and frugal infrastructure. Despite scarce funding, regulatory hurdles and limited facilities, organizations report tangible social value – improved access to services, dignified work, women’s leadership and community well-being – while identifying infrastructure and stable public support as critical bottlenecks. Research limitations/implications The findings of this study stem from a small, regional sample; future research should expand cases, triangulate with beneficiary outcomes and examine longitudinal effects. Practical implications Managers and funders can amplify impact by investing in basic infrastructure and multi-year funding. The findings also provide a roadmap for policymakers to design more effective support mechanisms for social ventures. Social implications Strengthening CSO–state collaboration can institutionalize care practices and scale inclusive development, offering a pathway to address systemic social problems. Originality/value This study advances a care-centric view of social value creation by showing how grassroots organizing functions as infrastructure where the state and markets underperform. This study integrates institutional-voids and social-entrepreneurship lenses to propose mechanisms – mission clarity, local embedding and networked resource mobilization – through which ventures recombine resources into durable care arrangements.
Read moreSARA: Leveraging LLM Agents and Jurisprudential Ontologies for Automated Legal Reasoning
Delivering judicial decisions requires interpreting complex legal texts, analyzing evidence, and reasoning over jurisprudence and legal principles. Recent advances in Generative Artificial Intelligence, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), have shown potential to automate parts of this process; however, practical and measurable benefits in real-world judicial settings remain limited. This paper introduces SARA, an LLM-powered legal reasoning platform deployed in a regional Brazilian court, which demonstrates significant efficiency and quality gains through the integration of LLM agents with a Jurisprudential Knowledge Graph (Jur-KG). SARA automatically extracts and structures key elements from legal documents, including claims, requests, and evidence, and generates legal reasoning grounded in retrieved jurisprudential precedents. The Jur-KG is modeled through an ontology encompassing core legal concepts such as parties, facts, and legal claims, enabling semantic matching and retrieval of relevant case law. By representing cases according to the Legal Case Ontology for the Brazilian Judicial System, SARA supports traceable reasoning and addresses competence questions to assess the coverage, coherence, and justification of AI-generated outputs. Deployment results indicate measurable improvements in processing time, consistency, and explainability, while ensuring compliance with ethical and legal guidelines established by Brazil’s National Council of Justice. This work demonstrates that combining LLM-based agents with domain-specific knowledge graphs can deliver both innovative capabilities and proven impact in judicial decision-making.

Neurocognitive performance in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is a demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system. Although motor and visual outcomes are established, cognitive effects remain unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed standardized neuropsychological tests to define the cognitive profile of MOGAD. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science up to August 15, 2025, identified 11 observational studies including 507 patients (68 pediatric, 439 adults). Extracted data included patient characteristics, treatments, and outcomes from validated cognitive instruments such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT-2 and PASAT-3), Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Fifth Edition (WISC-V). Adults with MOGAD showed mild global cognitive impairment, with pooled MoCA scores of 24.69 (95 % CI: 23.31-26.07). Processing speed and working memory were consistently affected, with pooled PASAT-3 means of 39.14 (95 % CI: 35.68-42.61), PASAT-2 of 30.91 (95 % CI: 28.08-33.75), and SDMT of 44.47 (95 % CI: 41.73-47.20). In pediatric cohorts, WISC-V scores suggested relative preservation of most domains (VCI: 95.57, VSI: 98.31, FRI: 106.14, WMI: 97.44, PSI: 96.66, FSIQ: 98.93). This meta-analysis shows that cognitive impairment is a heterogeneous but relevant feature of MOGAD, most evident in processing speed and working memory. Standardized cognitive testing should be integrated into care, and longitudinal studies are needed to clarify long-term outcomes.
