Abandono y asilvestramiento en una montaña marginal / Demographic emptying and recent landscape changes in the Ancares Leoneses. Abandonment and feralisation in a marginal mountain area
Read moreHealth and safety at work: achievements, shortcomings, and policy options
This working paper presents a comparative study on the health and safety conditions workers face in two sectors (construction and PHS/domestic work) and concerning the extent to which workers in these sectors can effectively exercise their social rights concerning OSH. Also, it examines how the main EU acquis on occupational health and safety at work has been transposed and applied and what its impact has been in terms of available power resources for workers in the two sectors. It explains the way the respective Directives foster effective social rights for workers through legislation and collective agreements. The study includes seven EU member states, namely, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Poland, and Ireland. We combine legal analysis with document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and descriptive statistics from national sources. According to our research, in general terms, the national transposing legislation of the OSH is in conformity with the studied EU OSH Directives. Our research also shows that, in many of the country cases, compliance with the OSH Directives minimum requirements is better in large establishments than in SMEs. However, there are some cases where the national legislation goes beyond the requirements of the EU framework directive. For example, in certain EU Member States domestic workers are included in the definition of ‘worker’ when transposing the Framework Directive, setting a broader personal scope of application than the Directive. But still, the workers in the two sectors face many health and safety problems and lack sufficient power resources to deal with them. Based on our analysis we present a series of policy recommendations that can help to improve this situation and strengthen the power resources of workers in the two sectors.
Read more0008 The endogenous circadian system provides for enhanced coronary microvascular function in the morning
Abstract Introduction Major adverse cardiovascular events occur most commonly in the morning compared to other times of the day or night. Evaluation of coronary microvascular reserve perfusion can be used to reflect the anatomic and functional status of the coronary vascular system, both of which contribute to major adverse cardiovascular events. Prior work suggests that coronary microvascular function is attenuated in the morning, but whether the circadian system contributes to this attenuation is unknown. Methods To determine if the circadian system drives the morning attenuation in coronary microvascular function, we studied 13 healthy participants (8 females, 5 males; 42+/-13 years [mean+/-SD]) in a 5-day forced desynchrony protocol in dim light, where all behaviors and measurements were distributed across the 24-hour cycle. Coronary microvascular function was evaluated by vasodilator myocardial contrast echocardiography, sequentially 16 hours apart, corresponding to each participant’s morning, evening and night. We analyzed time-intensity data to calculate microvascular flux rate (beta) at rest and during hyperemia for each measurement. Circadian phases were calculated based on individual dim-light melatonin onsets. We grouped data into three ~8-hour circadian bins corresponding to each participant’s morning, evening and night. Mixed model analyses were used to determine if there were significant differences between data collected in the circadian morning compared to the other times while controlling for the measurement schedule and between-subject variability. Results There were no significant time-dependent differences in echocardiographic indices of ventricular function, including stroke volume, cardiac output, or myocardial work. Contrary to our hypothesis, hyperemic perfusion was lowest in the evening rather than the morning (2.49 /s vs. 2.82 /s, p=0.042) but not different between morning and night (also 2.82 /s, p=0.96). Conclusion In healthy people, there is no circadian-system-driven morning attenuation in coronary microvascular function: indeed, the circadian system facilitates coronary vascular flow in the morning, possibly to accommodate the anticipated behaviorally driven increases in myocardial demand after awakening.

We describe research towards leveraging deep learning on graph representations of the injector beamline at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) in order to create a tool for improving the efficiency of beam tuning tasks. Specifically, we use graphs to represent the injector beamline at any arbitrary date and time and invoke a graph neural network to extract a low-dimensional, informative representation that can be visualized in two-dimensions. By analyzing years of operational data from the CEBAF archiver, good and bad regions of parameter space can be identified. The goal is to exercise this framework as a real-time tool to aid beam tuning, which represents the dominant source of machine downtime.

The participation of the victim in the execution phase of the criminal process in our legal order is a novel fact that, beyond civil reparation, starts from the Statute of the victim in 2015, and introduces Restorative Justice at that procedural moment. This instrument may become an important alternative or complement to traditional Justice in order to achieve a better satisfaction of the interests of the victim. A Program dealing with conditional parole inmates, convicts classified in third degree and sentenced to comunity services has been developed in the CIS “Máximo Carrera” of Valladolid since 2019, with the aim of drawing up an action protocol that may be extended to other prisons.
