BackgroundDespite the high burden of depression in Vietnam, little is known about the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and practices among Vietnamese people with depression in contemporary society. The study aims to explore in depth knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to depression among those with depressive symptoms of depression in contemporary Vietnamese society.MethodsThis is a qualitative study with 40 adults, 18–64 years old, with symptoms of depression. In-depth interviews were conducted to explore knowledge (symptoms, causes, treatment), attitudes, and practices to seek support or care for depression.ResultsParticipants demonstrated relatively adequate literacy regarding depression symptoms and treatment. Most people with depression know about psychotherapy and pharmacological treatment. Stigma related to depression seems lesser compared to that in the past. People with depression receive support from family and friends. A significant knowledge-practice gap was found, concealment of illness is common, access to care is limited, medicines are frequently discontinued, and praying and offering to altars to treat mental illness still exist. Based on analysis guided by the ‘glocalization theory’ we offer an explanatory account of the current state off knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward depression amongst people living with depression in Vietnam. This analysis recognizes the co-existence of global and local influences. People are creating and adapting their “glocal” views, attitudes, and norms around depression as well as mental illness. This explanatory model recognizes the co-existence of global and local influences, the influence of “glocal” dynamics to rationales the knowledge, attitudes and practices of people related to depression, therefore, it helps better explain and sharpen the responses to depression in Vietnam.ConclusionsSocietal changes have influenced the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors towards depression in Vietnam in positive ways; however, historical, cultural challenges continue, while new challenges are emerging. Our findings point to the need for renewed, continued efforts to improve mental health related awareness, while simultaneously improving the availability, accessibility, and responsiveness of mental health services. These efforts should take into account both global and local influences on how people in Vietnam think and act regarding mental health issues.Trial registrationClinicaltrials.gov, NCT06456775. Read moreEffective biosorptive removal of Pb2+ ions from wastewater using modified lettuce leaves: A novel sustainable and eco-friendly biosorbent
• Lettuce leaves (LC) served as a biosorbent for the uptake of Pb 2+ ions. • The decoration of alginate and DTPA led to a remarkable improve in uptake capacity. • The LC/ALG-DTPA biosorbent has a high adsorption capacity of 168.35 mg/g. • Adsorption mechanism is primarily driven by the formation of a Pb 2+ -DTPA complex. • The biosorbent can remove up to 73.42 % of Pb 2+ ions from urban wastewater. The design and synthesis of green material for the efficient treatment of heavy metal is of great environmental and economic significance. In the current report, lettuce leaves (LC) an inexpensive agricultural waste were modified employing alginate (ALG) and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) to generate a novel biosorbent for the sequestration of Pb 2+ ions. The biosorbents were characterized utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Under optimal conditions, the Pb 2+ biosorption efficiency and adsorption capacity onto LC/ALG-DTPA were 89.02 % and 71.22 mg.g -1 , respectively. The chemical adsorption was controlled by second-order kinetics and Langmuir's isothermal, revealing the highest biosorption capacity of 168.35 mg.g -1 . The biosorption system demonstrated a significantly higher affinity for Pb 2+ compared to Ni 2+ , with removal efficiencies of 86.54 and 30.13 %, respectively. Our findings indicated that the LC/ALG-DTPA exhibited moderate stability during regeneration, revealing a 15.43 % decrease in Pb 2+ biosorption efficiency after five cycles of immersion in harsh conditions. Notably, LC/ALG-DTPA removed up to 73.42 % of Pb 2+ species in urban wastewater and the cost of biomaterial preparation was calculated in detail. These results highlight LC/ALG-DTPA as a high-efficiency, eco-friendly biosorbent for eliminating Pb²⁺ from water, supporting its potential in wastewater treatment.
Read moreWhen the wild things are: Defining mammalian diel activity and plasticity.
Circadian rhythms are a mechanism by which species adapt to environmental variability and fundamental to understanding species behavior. However, we lack data and a standardized framework to accurately assess and compare temporal activity for species during rapid ecological change. Through a global network representing 38 countries, we leveraged 8.9 million mammalian observations to create a library of 14,587 standardized diel activity estimates for 445 species. We found that less than half the species' estimates were in agreement with diel classifications from the reference literature and that species commonly used more than one diel classification. Species diel activity was highly plastic when exposed to anthropogenic change. Furthermore, body size and distributional extent were strongly associated with whether a species is diurnal or nocturnal. Our findings provide essential knowledge of species behavior in an era of rapid global change and suggest the need for a new, quantitative framework that defines diel activity logically and consistently while capturing species plasticity.
Read moreSystematic camera trapping survey for terrestrial vertebrates in Xuan Lien Nature Reserve, Vietnam
BackgroundXuan Lien Nature Reserve was established in 1999 to protect important habitats and wildlife in the northern part of the Annamites in Vietnam. While Xuan Lien is home to many threatened species, it has experienced a high level of human disturbance over the last decades. To document and provide baseline data on the status and distribution of the terrestrial vertebrate fauna community in the region, we conducted a systematic camera trapping survey in Xuan Lien Nature Reserve in 2023. The data collected during the survey will help design proper conservation measures to better conserve the remaining species.New informationOur study investigates and updates the species richness of mid- to large-sized terrestrial vertebrates, thus providing essential information for developing conservation strategies in Xuan Lien Nature Reserve, Vietnam. As camera traps were set up in a grid-based design, our survey also generated the first-ever systematic data for terrestrial vertebrate fauna in the area. The study covers approximately 21,000 hectares (about 77% of the area), using 35 camera trap stations; each station consists of two cameras. In total, the final dataset consists of 6,276 trap nights, recording at least 46 species in 39 genera. The results suggest that Xuan Lien is a key stronghold for small carnivores, based on the diversity of such species groups in the Reserve. We failed to detect the previously documented Roosevelt’s muntjac (Muntiacusrooseveltorum Osgood, 1932) and we only documented a single record of the northern red muntjac (Muntiacusvaginalis Boddaert, 1785). Our survey confirms the severity of overhunting and other anthropogenic threats to the mammal fauna, especially ungulates, in the Reserve.
Read moreRelational Empowerment and Ethnic Minority Women in Vietnam: How Do Household and Community Relations Matter?
ABSTRACT Empowerment projects and research have focused on marginalised women, but often with less attention to the intersectional and relational conditions affecting their marginalisation. Ethnic minority women in Vietnam have multiple marginalising conditions, and they are targeted by government programmes to increase their participation in labour markets, their income, and their empowerment. Yet what the empowerment process looks like and achieves for these women is an important area for further study. This paper draws on a mixed-methods longitudinal study of an economic empowerment and livelihoods project that involved Hmong and Dao households in Vietnam. The quantitative data showed differences in women’s and men’s empowerment as measured on the A-WEAI, and among the different ethnic groups. Given these differences, we explored how power relations in the household and in the community affected Hmong and Dao women’s empowerment differently. We used a relational capabilitiarian approach to analyse the relations between men and women as well as the community structures that affected empowerment and wellbeing. The analysis shows that women’s and men's sharing of information, resources and workload are critical for improving women’s livelihoods and wellbeing, but these processes look different for Hmong and Dao women, and they are affected by different social structures.
Read moreDigital transformation in Vietnam: A case study of Hanoi SMEs
This research involved surveying 456 Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Hanoi, Vietnam, to understand the factors that affect their digital transformation. After gathering the data, it was analyzed using advanced statistical methods, specifically Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), with the help of software tools like SPSS and AMOS. The findings revealed six key factors that play a significant role in the digital transformation of SMEs. These factors mostly impact the process indirectly by shaping the companies' intentions toward digital transformation, with a less direct influence on the transformation process itself.
