Can oxybenzone cause Hirschsprung’s disease?
Interaction of slip‐ and flame‐spray coated carbon‐bonded alumina filters with steel melts
Abstract Ceramic foam filters play an essential role in the quest for cleanliness of cast steel parts as they facilitate turbulence reduction during mold filling as well as removal of nonmetallic inclusions. A coating on these filters is able to increase their strength and filtration efficiency by improving the adhesion of inclusions to the filter strands. In this study, Al 2 O 3 ‐C filters were coated with an alumina slip via slip and flame spraying. The phase composition and the microstructure of the coatings were investigated before and after immersion into molten steel contained in a metal casting simulator. After contact with molten steel, Al 2 O 3 ‐C reference filter shows intense decarburization which often influence the quality of cast steel parts due to formation of gas bubbles. Slip‐sprayed alumina coatings on such a filter promote the deposition of inclusions due to formation of a vitreous alumina layer but will also cause gas bubble formation as they exhibit a high porosity. Flame‐spray coatings have low porosity and hence, prevent formation of gas bubbles. Furthermore, they showed the highest reactivity toward the steel melt and hence, are recommended for filtration of cast products with a high demand on cleanliness.

Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3) is an emerging human and environmental contaminant used in sunscreens and personal care products to help minimize the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation. The Center for Disease Control fourth national report on human exposure to environmental chemicals demonstrated that approximately 97% of the people tested have oxybenzone present in their urine, and independent scientists have reported various concentrations in waterways and fish worldwide. Oxybenzone can also react with chlorine, producing hazardous by-products that can concentrate in swimming pools and wastewater treatment plants. Moreover, adverse reactions could very well be increased by the closed loop of ingesting fish contaminated with oxybenzone and/or washing the ingredient off our bodies and having it return in drinking water as treatment plants do not effectively remove the chemical as part of their processing protocols. In humans, oxybenzone has been reported to produce contact and photocontact allergy reactions, implemented as a possible endocrine disruptor and has been linked to Hirschsprung's disease. Environmentally, oxybenzone has been shown to produce a variety of toxic reactions in coral and fish ranging from reef bleaching to mortality. Lastly, with the rise in skin cancer rates and the availability of more effective sunscreen actives such as micronized zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, serious doubts about the relative prevention benefit of personal care products containing oxybenzone must be raised and compared with the potential negative health and environmental effects caused by the accumulation of this and other chemicals in the ecosystem.

Mercury intrusion and nitrogen sorption porosimetry were employed to investigate the pore structure of calcium sulfoaluminate ( Coverline{S} A ) and portland cement pastes with cement-to-water ratio (w/c) of 0.40, 0.50, and 0.60. A unimodal distribution of pore size was drawn for Coverline{S} A cement pastes, whereas a bimodal distribution was established for the portland cement pastes through analysis of mercury intrusion porosimetry. For the experimental results generated by nitrogen sorption porosimetry, the Coverline{S} A cement pastes have a smaller and coarser pore volume than cement paste samples under the same w/c condition. The relative dynamic modulus and percentage weight loss were used for investigation of the concrete durability in freeze–thaw condition. When coarse aggregate with good freeze–thaw durability was mixed, air entrained portland cement concrete has the same durability in terms of relative dynamic modulus as Coverline{S} A cement concrete in a freeze–thaw environment. The Coverline{S} A cement concrete with poor performance of durability in a freeze–thaw environment demonstrates the improved durability by 300 % over portland cement concrete. The Coverline{S} A concrete with good performance aggregate also exhibits less surface scaling in a freeze–thaw environment, losing 11 % less mass after 297 cycles.
