Due to the heavy weight, large volume, and environmental concerns associated with traditional power frequency transformers at medium voltage and higher levels, solid-state transformers (SSTs) have become a significant research focus. Although SSTs remain relatively costly, they are well suited for applications in medium voltage power grids and DC loads, such as renewable energy integration, data center power supply, and electric vehicle charging. This paper proposes a power electronic structure based on a single-stage SST, designed for electric vehicle fast charging stations (EV-FCS). Compared to traditional SSTs, the proposed structure eliminates the need for additional isolated DC/DC converters by implementing a balancing circuit, which can significantly reduce the cost and improve the efficiency. The simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed topology. Furthermore, a cost analysis indicates that the total cost of the charging station is reduced compared to conventional SSTbased solutions. Finally, a down-scale experimental prototype was built to verify the basic principle.
