Ecological Functions and Socio-economic Benefits of Aquatic Ecosystems in the Albertine Rift: State of Knowledge
The Albertine Rift, located in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), constitutes a significant ecosystem, characterised by an exceptional diversity of aquatic environments, including lakes, rivers, wetlands, and peat lands. These ecosystems play a fundamental role in the socio-economic livelihoods of riparian communities. This study adopts a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on the concepts of ecosystem services, socio-ecological systems, and political ecology. It highlights the multiple functions of these aquatic environments, namely fisheries, irrigated agriculture, domestic water supply, artisanal activities, ecotourism, spirituality, and cultural cohesion. Aquatic ecosystems are central to food security, rural economic development, and the preservation of cultural identities. In addition, they provide essential regulating services, such as water resource management, water purification, and carbon sequestration. Collectively, these services enhance the resilience of local communities in the face of climatic variability and socio-political crises. Despite their importance, these ecosystems are increasingly threatened by pollution, uncontrolled urban expansion, overexploitation of resources, climate change, and institutional lacunas. Their degradation is driven by multiple interacting factors, including population pressure and conflicts over natural resource use. In response, this study advocates for an integrated and participatory governance framework that emphasises the valorisation of local knowledge. It calls for ecological restoration initiatives, the promotion of a sustainable local economy, capacity building within communities, and increased investment in environmental education. Under such strategic orientations, the aquatic ecosystems of the Albertine Rift could serve as key pillars for sustainable development, peacebuilding, and socio-ecological resilience in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This contribution investigates the influence of high frequencies as well as harmonics on refractive field grading material for medium voltage cable accessories. The dielectric losses of the refractive field grading material are first measured and evaluated to determine the influence of harmonics. Then, a model of a medium voltage cable joint incorporating the test sample as field grading material is computed using Finite Element Method (FEM). Using a Multiphysics approach, the electrothermal behaviour of the model is evaluated under the influence of high frequencies and harmonics. Preliminary results show that high frequencies do not significantly increase the electric field strength on the interface. Additionally, high frequencies up to 2 kHz also d o not result in any significant temperature increase in the field grading material. Similarly, under harmonics, the increase in the electric field strength remains negligible.
Read moreModerating Effect of Collaboration in the Relationship Between Training and Teachers Engagement in the Secondary Schools of Nepal
This study explores the critical role of teacher engagement in enhancing teaching performance and student academic achievement in secondary schools in Kathmandu, Nepal. Recognizing that engaged teachers are motivated and dedicated, this research examines the moderating effect of teamwork on teachers’ engagement following professional training. Data were collected from a sample of 320 teachers from both public and private schools and analyzed using descriptive statistics in SPSS and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in AMOS. Findings reveal a significant positive relationship between teacher training and professional development, confirming that training directly influences teacher engagement. However, teamwork as a moderating factor did not show a significant catalytic effect on enhancing engagement post-training. This study contributes to the literature by identifying potential gaps in the translation of training into engagement through teamwork, offering new insights into the challenges of fostering collaborative practices that support teacher development in the Nepalese educational context.

Abstract BACKGROUND CDKN2A/B (cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A/B) gene alterations are integral to the diagnosis and prognostication of IDH-mutant gliomas. CDKN2A/B status is commonly assessed by next generation sequencing (NGS) or inferred from loss of the surrogate marker MTAP (5’-methylthioadenosine phosphorylase) by immunohistochemistry, since the MTAP gene (located adjacent to the CDKN2A/B locus on chromosome 9p21) is often presumed deleted when CDKN2A/B is deleted. However, with MTAP deletion emerging as a therapeutic target in gliomas, directly characterising its incidence and implications is essential. METHODS The incidence of CDKN2A/B and MTAP deletions was evaluated by NGS multigene panels across glioma subtypes within the Australian national Molecular Screening and Therapeutics (MoST) and Cancer Screening Programs (CaSP). All patients with glioma (glioblastoma, astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma) enrolled between June 2017 and April 2025 were reviewed. Sequencing was performed using FoundationOne CDx, TruSight Oncology 500, TruSight Tumor 170, or AVENIO. For panels not directly assessing MTAP, a bioinformatic algorithm was used to predict deletion based on copy number variation in non-targeted regions. RESULTS Of 785 gliomas, 328 (41.8%) had CDKN2A deletion and 271 (34.5%) had CDKN2A/B codeletion. MTAP homozygous deletion, whether predicted or directly measured, was observed in 230 (70.1%) with CDKN2A deletion and in 200 (73.8%) with CDKN2A/B codeletion. MTAP deletion was not identified in the absence of CDKN2A deletion. An additional 19 patients harboured CDKN2A/B mutations without associated MTAP deletion. When stratified by IDH mutation status, CDKN2A deletion occurred in 40 of 200 IDH-mutant gliomas (20%), with co-occurring MTAP deletion in 31 cases (77.5%); and in 288 of 585 IDH-wildtype gliomas (49.2%), with co-occurring MTAP deletion in 199 (69.1%). CONCLUSIONS MTAP deletions can no longer be inferred from CDKN2A/B status alone. Beyond NGS, evaluating other methods of determining MTAP deletion status such as immunohistochemistry would be worthwhile as a cost-effective method for screening and/or validation.
