From Corrosion to Resilience: Innovative Pipe Rehabilitation Solution Boosts Reliability for Silicon Valley Clean Water
Silicon Valley Clean Water (SVCW) provides wastewater treatment for over 220,000 users in the San Francisco mid-peninsula area. The treatment plant, established in the 1970s, faced significant challenges due to an aging piping system. Particularly, the plant’s sludge under their digester and secondary clarifier started showing signs of corrosion, exacerbated by their location near the saline San Francisco Bay. To address this issue, SVCW explored several rehabilitation options, ultimately identifying spray-in-place pipe (SIPP) lining and cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) as the most practical and cost-effective solutions. Despite severe corrosion, varying pipe diameters, difficult access, and tight schedules, the project team successfully implemented SIPP rehabilitation. This accomplishment highlights the importance of innovative thinking, skilled craftsmanship, and teamwork in resolving complex infrastructure challenges.

The Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test with Children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
The primary purpose of this study was to test two hypotheses proposed by Bracken and McCallum (1998), authors of the Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test (UNIT), as to how children diagnosed with ADHD would perform on the UNIT. Twenty-nine students between the ages of 5 and 17 years were administered the extended battery of the UNIT twice, with an average of 31 days between testing sessions. Paired sample t tests evaluated mean scores on various sections of the UNIT, and test-retest stability coefficients were compared with those reported in the test manual. As one hypothesis predicted, the students' scores were significantly lower on the Memory Quotient than on the Reasoning Quotient. However, an alternative hypothesis predicting lower scores on successive-processing and planning tasks than on simultaneous tasks was not supported. Additional findings were reported on the stability of the UNIT with students with ADHD.
Read moreAre the rhythm tests of the Halstead-Reitan and Luria-Nebraska batteries differentially sensitive to right temporal lobe lesions?
Contemporary manuals on neuropsychological assessment advocate the interpretation of deficits in rhythm test performance as related to right temporal lobe dysfunction. There have been very few empirical tests of this interpretation. Despite the fact that there are theoretical reasons to suspect that the right temporal lobe is involved in the processing of nonverbal auditory information, there are absolutely no concurrent validity data that support this hypothesized relationship for either of the rhythm tests of the Halstead-Reitan or Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Batteries. Therefore, clinicians are cautioned with regard to this popular interpretation of rhythm test performance deficits.
