Passive protection of vehicles is the subject of numerous research and development works carried out both by independent centers and research centers within the structures of automotive concerns. While the passive protection of passenger cars has been developed basically since the beginnings of mature motorization, there are still many unregulated issues related to the safety of vehicles used in closed areas - including especially light transport vehicles with electric drives. These vehicles are built in small series and so far have not been equipped with additional structures to ensure their safety. Therefore, Łukasiewicz-WIT has undertaken a series of works related to the development of protective structures dedicated to this group of means of transport. This article presents the results of research in this field.

ABSTRACTThis quantitative study examined the predictive impact of a series of factors on female community college students’ intention to transfer in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The STEM Student Success Literacy survey (SSSL) was utilized to collect data from a large, diverse community college located in Florida. After the data cleaning and preparation, the authors first constructed a model that measures potentially predictive factors such as social capital, student engagement, and chilly climate. Then, a regression model including these factors and demographic characteristics was tested using a multinomial regression analysis. Findings generated implications for future research, policy, and practice to better serve and assist female students in their pursuit of a STEM degree.

Abstract When finds are limited, it is good planning to centralize student instructional support areas whose missions overlap. At Western Iowa Tech Community College several areas including the library, computer lab and the Student Success Center were combined into a single unit, the Learning Achievement Center.

Butt welding is practically difficult for sheet metals as thin as 50–100 μm. A new concept called marginal lap welding is developed in this study to produce continuous and distortion-free welds for such thin sheets. The energy loss due to heat conduction into the clamps becomes significant under this situation, and therefore, the input laser power to produce an effective weld increases. This article investigates the effects of heat loss during marginal lap welding of ultrathin stainless-steel (SS316L) sheets experimentally and theoretically. A mathematical model is developed to calculate the amount of conduction heat loss and the weld geometry. The results show that a smaller clamp gap causes more heat loss into the clamps and generates a narrow heat-affected zone, which is found to be beneficial to the corrosion resistance of the weldment.
