This study aimed to use self-determination theory to examine the motivations of a sample of diverse undergraduate students attending a Hispanic-Serving Institution and the benefits they experienced on a field trip to southeastern New Mexico, USA, in the winter of 2023. We used a qualitative, single case study. The case comprised a field trip for undergraduate students—geology majors and non-majors. The field trip was a low-stakes opportunity for students interested in STEM and geoscience to experience fieldwork and explore new terrain at little to no cost to students. We recruited 17 undergraduate students attending the trip to participate in the study. We collected data via one-on-one online interviews prior to and after the field trip, and daily journaling during the trip. We used iterative cycles of coding to analyze the data as a team. We found that students had a mix of motivations to attend the field trip, including enjoyment, prior experiences, a desire to make new and deepen existing relationships, and an interest in learning more about geoscience and camping. We also found that their experiences mirrored their motivations—they benefited from the new knowledge about camping and geoscience, the new relationships they forged, and the enjoyment they derived from being outdoors with friends, looking at and for rocks. Our findings suggest that programs capitalize on students’ curiosity to motivate them to attend field trips, universities offer K-12 programming, and field trip organizers prepare students for the conditions they will encounter on field trips.

Canard wings have gradually become more and more popular since the advent of the supersonic jet era, and research on the subject has become more detailed in order to be able to manoeuvre this pair of small wings more perfectly and effectively. This paper mainly studies the aerodynamic principle of the canard wings and the impact of its aerodynamic advantages on the efficacy and stealth performance of the aircraft under different aerodynamic stability and makes a comparative analysis with the horizontal tail. Through literature analysis and review as well as a small number of comparative analyses, this paper concludes that although canard wings can provide many aerodynamic advantages, they also have their limitations. Canards can only be effectively coupled when they are close to the main wing and longitudinally higher than or equal to the height of the main wings. The radar cross-section (RCS) characteristic of the canard wings will increase with the angle of its deflection.

US policy increasingly ties payments for providers to performance on quality measures, though little empirical evidence guides the design of such incentives. I deploy administrative data to study a large federal program that penalizes hospitals with high readmissions rates. Using policy-driven variation in the penalty incentive across hospitals for identication, I nd that hospital responses to the penalty account for two-thirds of the observed decrease in readmissions over this period, as well as a decrease in heart at-tack mortality. Quality improvement accounts for about half of the decrease in readmissions; the remainder is explained by selective admission of returning patients.

The primary purpose of this study was to compare age-adjusted mortality rates before and after linkage with Indian Health Service records, adjusting for racial misclassification. We focused on differences in racial misclassification by gender, age, geographic differences, substate planning districts, and cause of death. Our secondary purpose was to evaluate time trends in misclassification from 1991 to 2015. Retrospective, descriptive study. Oklahoma. Persons contained in the Oklahoma State Health Department Vital Records. To evaluate the age-adjusted mortality ratio pre- and post-Indian Health Service record linkage (misclassification rate ratio) and to evaluate the overall trend of racial misclassification on mortality records measured through annual percent change (APC) and average annual percent change (AAPC). We identified 2 stable trends of racial misclassification upon death for American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) from 1991 to 2001 (APC: -0.2%; 95% confidence interval: -1.4% to 1.0%) and from 2001 to 2005 (APC: -6.9%; 95% confidence interval: -13.7% to 0.4%). However, the trend identified from 2005 to 2015 decreased significantly (APC: -1.4%; 95% confidence interval: -2.5% to -0.2%). For the last 5 years available (2011-2015), the racial misclassification adjustment resulted in higher mortality rates for AI/ANs reflecting an increase from 1008 per 100 000 to 1305 per 100 000 with the linkage process. There were an estimated 3939 AI/ANs in Oklahoma who were misclassified as another race upon death in those 5 years, resulting in an underestimation of actual AI/AN deaths by nearly 29%. An important result of this study is that misclassification is improving; however, this effort needs to be maintained and further improved. Continued linkage efforts and public access to linked data are essential throughout the United States to better understand the burden of disease in the AI/AN population.

A vast and seemingly endless stream of research on the Texas Rangers continues on well now into yet another century, the legend and lore, even the facts, corroborating the illustrious fame of generations of law enforcement in Texas. From their earliest days as a security patrol guarding Stephen F. Austin’s colonial borders from roving Comanches, through the halcyon days of reckless adventures by undaunted frontiersmen, to the nascent organization of the Republic and then early statehood years, the fabled Rangers continue to enthrall ensuing generations of eager readers. Bookshelves of published works defy belief in their breadth, while new perspectives await the next author’s pen. Into this remarkably resilient library comes Darren Ivey’s excellent contribution of short biopics of the earliest names associated with the Ranger Story, but only the first volume in a series. Ivey’s research is superlative, his clear and concise writing style even better. The first offering he has made here, of the earliest Rangers later inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame, makes for a who’s who list of the very best of their day, or maybe any day – John Coffee “Jack” Hays, maybe the prototype himself, Ben McCulloch, Big Foot Wallace, Samuel Walker of Colt revolver fame, and finally John S. “Rip” Ford walking the budding legend into the Civil War era. This reader especially appreciates the lead-off chapter on Col. Austin, the originator of the Ranger force but all too often overlooked for his signal contribution that began it all. Each chapter tells a fascinating tale of these men, both as fearless individuals and as consummate leaders of men.

Abstract— In this paper the analysis of the criteria in the determination of outstanding teachers .Analysis techniques in determining the priority weight alternative uses models Analytical Hierarchy Process, which was developed by Dr. Thomas L. Saaty of the Wharton School of Business. Criteria used is discipline, responsibility, loyalty, and devices that affect the teaching of alternative priority on a global scale. Once the data is collected and the data can be processed using Expert Choice software assistance in 2000 . From the processing of data by using models Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the 2000 Expert Choice main obtained results, the highest priority in determining the strategic alternatives outstanding teachers are teacher D with value 0,274. Priority ranking second alternative is teacher E value 0,212, the third alternative priority rating is teacher F value 0,168 . Priority ranking fourth alternative is teacher B value 0,134 Then ranked five priority is teacher C value 0,107. While the lowest priority ranking is teacher A values 0,106.Intisari— Pada penelitian ini dilakukan analisa mengenai kriteria dalam penentuan guru berprestasi. Berikutnya peringkat prioritas terendah adalah guru A (nilai bobot 0,106).Kata kunci : Model Analitycal Hierarchy Process (AHP), Penentuan Guru Berprestasi

An influential result in modern optimal tax theory, the Atkinson and Stiglitz (1976) theorem, holds that for a broad class of utility functions, all redistribution should be carried out through labor income taxation, rather than differential taxes on commodities or capital. An important requirement for that result is that commodity taxes are known and fully salient when consumers make income-determining choices. This paper allows for the possibility consumers may be inattentive to (or unaware of) some commodity taxes when making choices about income. We show that commodity taxes are useful for redistribution in this setting. In fact, the optimal commodity taxes essentially follow the classic “many person Ramsey rule” (Diamond 1975), scaled by the degree of inattention. As a result, to the extent that commodity taxes are not (fully) salient, goods should be taxed when they are less elastically consumed, and when they are consumed primarily by richer consumers. We extend this result to the setting of corrective taxes, and show how non-salient corrective taxes should be adjusted for distributional reasons.

We use novel monthly survey data from 1993 to 2012 on small business managerial perceptions of financial constraints and other conditions, matched with information on banks in their local markets. The data suggest that small banks have comparative advantages in alleviating these constraints. These advantages tend to be greater during adverse economic conditions and do not appear to decrease or increase secularly. Small banks also appear to have comparative advantages in providing liquidity insurance to small business customers of large banks experiencing liquidity shocks during financial crises. Our findings suggest a source of social costs from ongoing consolidation of the banking industry. Received December 28, 2015; editorial decision January 13, 2017 by Editor Philip Strahan.

Q: Why does healthcare cost so much in America while ranking so low in international rankings?A: It costs so much because it's the best in the world. After all, people who are really sick with really bad diseases and maladies often choose to come to the United States for care if they can.Adequate emphasis should be given to facilities that are particularly useful for prevention of diseases-mental as well as physical.
