This paper proposes a discrete-time sliding mode control (DTSMC) approach for controlling a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). To ensure precise speed tracking, a cascade control strategy is introduced. The stability of the proposed control scheme is analyzed, and a formal proof of the ultimate boundedness of the speed tracking error is provided. The developed control methodology yields superior control performance and robustness characteristics relative to the industry-standard PI cascaded control employed by Whirlpool in domestic appliances. Experimental testing of the control scheme was also conducted using a commercial PMSM drive.

This paper proposes a speed control approach for a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) based on the finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) strategy. It utilizes a cascaded control scheme comprising an inner FCS-MPC current control loop and an outer Sliding Mode Control (SMC) loop. PMSMs are extensively used in industry, and FCS-MPC has been developed for current control due to its fast dynamic response, capability to enforce constraints, and potential elimination of a modulator. Additionally, SMC has gained recognition as an effective approach for controlling PMSMs, thanks to its robustness against model uncertainties and disturbances. The proposed approach, when compared with the conventional PI cascaded control usually implemented by Whirlpool on domestic machines, has demonstrated a noticeable improvement in terms of control performances and robustness.

The multi-agent systems technology is a proper approach to implement distributed manufacturing systems exhibiting adaptation and flexibility. This paper proposes a multi-agent based solution for the adaptation of the functional test plan in a production line producing washing machines, aiming to increase the process productivity and product quality. The global adaptation mechanism is embedded on the multiagent system infrastructure, allowing the optimized selection of tests based on the correlation of the quality data gathered along the production line. The proposed approach was developed and installed on a real production line producing washing machines under the European Seventh Framework Programme GRACE project.

The present paper deals with the question how product quality can be influenced within the engineering of factory automation systems. It focuses on discrete manufacturing processes and presents a methodology to gather and analyze relevant influences on product quality within a so called MPFQ-model. The model is based on four main elements: Materials, Processes, Functions and Quality. The paper brings together functional design/thinking in plant design with product and manufacturing design. It will show the basic architecture behind the MPFQ model and how quality influences can be methodically detected. Afterwards the application of the MPFQ-model will be shown and benefits will be evaluated.

Emulsion technology has proven to offer improvements to the performance of rigid polyurethane foam both in terms of general physical properties as well as for insulation performance. The presence of insoluble liquid materials generates a very fine celled structure leading to the above mentioned advantages. Earlier technological developments made in this direction made use of fully or highly fluorinated materials, an approach which became jeopardised because of the unfavourable environmental properties (especially the very high GWP) of this type of materials. A new approach has now been identified which via a similar process, results in polyurethane foam showing improved physical properties, but which doesn't offer negative environmental properties. The improved physical properties include a 10% reduction in minimum stable density in comparison to actual systems available in the market. This paper describes all aspects of this new approach, both in terms of its physical and environmental properties, as well as the final physical properties of the PU foam produced. The overall environmental impact of the different options identified using this approach also will be discussed. Several aspects of the effect of the emulsion technology on the general processing of the foam system will be highlighted. Sourcing, availability and cost impact of the new technology options will also be discussed.

A high-quality rectifier for supplying resistive loads is presented. It features high power factor, low input current distortion and high efficiency. It is a step-down power converter and its device stresses are the same as for a buck power converter, while input current is continuous. The power converter, suitable for heating and lighting applications, is analyzed and experimentally tested on a 1 kW prototype.
