Physics Concepts in Traditional Bakpia Production: Exploring Local Culinary Processes as Contextual Learning Resources
Traditional culinary practices often involve physics processes that can be interpreted through scientific principles, yet these phenomena are rarely explored as contextual learning resources in physics education. This study aims to identify and analyze physics concepts embedded in the traditional production of bakpia, a well-known local pastry from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach through direct observation and documentation of the dough mixing and roasting stages in a local bakpia production setting. The observed processes were then analyzed using fundamental physics concepts, particularly in the domains of mechanics and heat transfer. The results indicate that the dough mixing stage reflects principles of rotational motion, pulley transmission, angular velocity, frictional interaction, and mechanical power, while the roasting stage demonstrates multiple heat transfer mechanisms, including conduction, convection, and radiation. These findings reveal that traditional bakpia production inherently embodies scientific principles that can be explained through physics concepts. The study highlights the potential of local culinary practices as meaningful contextual resources for physics learning, contributing to the development of culturally relevant and context-based science education.

Read moreParticipatory Action Research to Strengthen Community Early-Warning Facilitators in Nonformal Education: An Indonesian Case
Background - Facilitator capacity is critical for the effectiveness of community-based early warning systems (CBEWS) in disaster risk reduction. Facilitators serve as intermediaries translating complex hazard data into actionable insights that enable communities to respond effectively to disasters. In Indonesia, where disaster risk is high, facilitators play an essential role in protecting lives and livelihoods at the grassroots level. Urgency of Research - Despite their importance, capacity-building approaches for CBEWS facilitators often employ top-down training methods that fail to engage facilitators as active agents in their own learning. Current programs lack participatory approaches that leverage facilitators' contextual knowledge and experience, undermining the sustainability and relevance of capacity-building initiatives. There is an urgent need for innovative, participatory approaches that position facilitators as co-creators of knowledge. Research Objectives - This study aimed to describe the process and outcomes of implementing participatory action research (PAR) to enhance the capacity of CBEWS program facilitators in nonformal education settings, investigating how PAR supports facilitator understanding of CBEWS concepts, develops contextual and adaptive facilitation skills, cultivates reflective capacity, and identifies enabling and inhibiting factors. Research Method - This qualitative descriptive study was conducted between 2021 and 2024 across seven disaster-prone Indonesian provinces: Central Java, East Java, West Java, Banten, South Kalimantan, Gorontalo, and Bali. Forty-five CBEWS facilitators participated in PAR cycles involving planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through 60+ hours of participatory observation, 20 in-depth interviews, 8 focus group discussions, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns and themes. Research Findings - Three dimensions of capacity development emerged: enhanced understanding of CBEWS concepts applicable to specific disaster contexts; improved contextual and adaptive facilitation skills enabling tailoring of approaches to community needs and creation of inclusive learning environments; and cultivated reflective capacity for systematic practice improvement. Enabling factors included institutional support, facilitator openness to learning, and collaborative researcher-facilitator relationships. Inhibiting factors included limited time for reflection, dual roles as implementers and learners, and organizational barriers. Research Conclusion & Novelty - Participatory action research effectively develops facilitator capacity when supported by institutional commitment and multi-year engagement. This approach provides a viable model for community-based disaster risk reduction programs, contributing to both adult learning theory in nonformal education settings and practical disaster risk reduction implementation.
Read moreInvestigating Teachers' Attitudes towards Multicompetence in English Language Teaching
Purpose – This study investigates English tutors’ attitudes toward multicompetence in an English course in Yogyakarta. Multicompetence views language learners as users of multiple linguistic systems rather than imperfect native speakers. Despite its growing relevance in language education, limited research explores how tutors in private language courses perceive this concept. Therefore, this study aims to examine tutors’ perspectives on multicompetence and its relevance to English language learning. Methodology – This study employed a qualitative descriptive research design. Six English tutors from an English course institution in Yogyakarta were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews to explore tutors’ perceptions of multicompetence. The analysis followed three stages: familiarization with the data, coding, and interpretation. The interview transcripts were analyzed thematically to identify patterns related to teaching perspectives and the use of learners’ first language. Findings – Tutors generally hold positive attitudes toward multicompetence. They emphasize effective communication rather than native-like fluency and consider students’ first language as a valuable learning resource. Tutors also view multilingual ability as an advantage in language learning. The study suggests that integrating multicompetence into teaching can support communicative competence and more inclusive learning environments. Novelty – This study provides insights into tutors’ perceptions of multicompetence within the context of private English language courses. Significance – The findings may benefit English teachers, teacher trainers, language course providers, and researchers by helping develop more inclusive language-teaching practices.
