This study examines the effects of supply chain agility (SCAG) and supply chain resilience (SCRES) on performance under the moderating effect of organizational culture. We have used the dynamic capability view (DCV) to conceptualize our theoretical models for different phases of humanitarian supply chain (HSC) (pre and post-disaster phases). We used partial least squares (PLS) to examine the proposed research hypotheses using 335 responses gathered from organizations in India using questionnaires designed for a single respondent. The results suggest that SCAG and SCRES are two important dynamic capabilities of supply chain, have significant effects on pre-disaster performance (PRE-DP). The control orientation does not have significant effect on the path joining SCAG and PRE-DP. However, the control orientation has a significant interaction effect on the path joining SCRES and PRE-DP. Similarly, SCRES has significant effect on post-disaster performance (POST-DP) but SCAG has no significant effect on POST-DP. In contrast, the flexible orientation has significant moderation effects on the paths SCAG/SCRES and POST-DP. These findings contribute to our understanding of the differential effect of SCAG/SCRES on supply chain performance in different contexts. The results provide further understanding to develop appropriate strategies for different phases. Finally, limitations of our study and future research are presented.

Pig sector in China is faced with high risks, such as price fluctuation and food safety, and environmental regulation uncertainty. The recent African swine fever has caused public panic and drop down of pork consumption in a short term. The “wu-shui-gong-zhi” policy is a newly recognized environmental policy risk, and its key content is to shut down directly the pig farms close to water resources. Lots of small- and medium-sized farms have been affected, especially in coastal provinces. Supply chain integration received wide attention in supply chain management. Literature has shown that a well-coordinated food supply chain will bring positive outcomes for chain stakeholders. However, the relationship between food supply chain integration and resilience is not empirically captured. This research aims to explore the relationship between supply chain integration and supply chain resilience, and the mechanism of how supply chain integration works on supply chain resilience. To achieve the research purpose, an in-depth ethnographical case study is performed. Four cases in China’s pig sector were selected, with different types of supply chain integration between cooperative and companies. They differ in supply chain resilience levels. We found that supply chain integration has a positive effect on supply chain resilience through agility and robustness. Supply chain agility also has positive relationship with supply chain robustness. It implies that supply chain stakeholders should efficiently exchange information, enhance circulation rate, and jointly make plans to be more resilient to risks. The government needs to make policies to encourage and facilitate supply chain integration among supply chain members to enhance supply chain resilience.

This study examines how Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies enhance supply chain resilience (SCR) in manufacturing firms by testing the mediating roles of supply chain agility (SCAG), supply chain adaptability (SCAD) and the moderating effect of customer integration (CI). Grounded in the Resource-Based View (RBV) and Dynamic Capabilities View (DCV), the research conceptualizes digital technologies—such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI)—as both strategic resources and enablers of dynamic capabilities in turbulent environments. Survey data were collected from 273 manufacturing firms in Turkey, a context shaped by geopolitical and economic disruptions, and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results indicate that I4.0 technologies positively affect SCR directly and indirectly through SCAG and SCAD. However, while agility consistently strengthens resilience, adaptability shows a negative mediating effect, suggesting context-specific constraints. CI significantly amplifies the positive impact of I4.0 on SCR, underscoring the importance of external relational capabilities. Theoretically, this research advances supply chain literature by integrating RBV and DCV to explain how digital transformation drives resilience through distinct dynamic capabilities. Practically, it offers guidance for managers to combine digital infrastructure with collaborative customer relationships to mitigate disruptions and secure long-term performance. Overall, the study provides an integrated framework for building resilient supply chains in the digital era.

PurposeThis study analyzes the role of supply chain ambidexterity (SC-Ambidexterity) in developing supply chain resilience (SC-Resilience). We describe SC-Ambidexterity as a simultaneous application of supply chain adaptability (SC-Adaptability) and supply chain alignment (SC-Alignment) capabilities. We also consider the role of supply chain agility (SC-Agility) in the relationship between SC-Ambidexterity and SC-Resilience. We further suggest that the relationship between SC-Ambidexterity and SC-Resilience may be stronger in case of higher market uncertainty.Design/methodology/approachBased on the dynamic capabilities view (DCV) of the firm, we develop a set of hypotheses that are tested through a survey of manufacturing firms in Pakistan. The hypothesized model is tested through structural equation modeling (SEM).FindingsThe results of this study show a positive effect of SC-Ambidexterity on SC-Resilience. SC-Agility positively mediates the relationship between SC-Ambidexterity and SC-Resilience. However, our results show that this relationship does not vary at different levels of environmental uncertainty.Originality/valueThis study provides the seminal operationalization of SC-Ambidexterity in the supply chain context. It further shows the importance of SC-Ambidexterity and SC-Agility in contributing toward SC-Resilience.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how blockchain technology can improve supply chain adaptability, alignment and agility which collectively enhance competitive advantage which in turn influences firm performance. Design/methodology/approach The conceptual framework of the present study is developed by conducting an extensive literature review on blockchain technology, supply chain adaptability, alignment, agility and competitive advantage. The sample data were collected from 397 supply chain practitioners in India to validate the conceptual model. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to ascertain the validity of the measures used and a structural model was analyzed for testing the proposed conceptual framework. Findings The results of the present study show that blockchain technology can improve supply chain adaptability, alignment, agility which lead to competitive advantage, which leads to better firm performance. Besides, trust generated through blockchain use also increases firm performance. Research limitations/implications Currently, the respondents do not have practical experience of using blockchain technology. They have responded based on their knowledge about supply chain and blockchain which they acquired from published sources. Different supply chains require different strategic choices and different information needs. But the present study assumes that all supply chain needs are identical. The present study assumes that government regulations regarding blockchain technology are favorable; however, currently, there is no legal framework to address blockchain technology. The findings of the current study indicate that companies not only should create more awareness regarding blockchain but also should actively work with IT companies that are engaged in developing blockchain-based supply chain solution. Managers, as well as IT companies and academicians, should join hands to study and develop a framework for regulating blockchain technology and suggest these to the policy actors. Practical implications The present study shows that supply chain practitioners are confident that blockchain technology will help improve supply chain parameters. These findings can help IT companies and their marketers for developing and promoting blockchain-based IT applications. In addition, the important implication for supply chain practitioners is that blockchain helps in creating a competitive advantage and increases firm performance. Originality/value The effect of IT on important supply chain variables has been studied in the past; however, there is not a single study which sheds light on how disruptive technologies such as blockchain will affect supply chain adaptability, alignment, agility and firm performance.

PurposeThis study aims to examine the impact of supply chain digitalization (SCD) on supply chain performance (SCP) with the integration of supply chain agility (SCA) and supply chain resilience (SCR) in manufacturing firms. Additionally, it investigates the moderating role of environmental dynamism (ED) in these relationships in the context of manufacturing firms.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative research design was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire to collect data. The sample consisted of 374 valid responses from various managerial levels within manufacturing firms in Jordan. A purposive sampling technique was used to ensure that participants had relevant expertise in supply chain management. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) through Smart PLS software to test the proposed hypotheses.FindingsThe study found that SCD positively impacts SCP by enhancing both SCA and SCR. Digital technologies were shown to improve supply chain visibility, speed of decision-making and resource efficiency, which are essential for maintaining performance under uncertain conditions. Furthermore, ED significantly moderates the relationship between digitalization and SCP, indicating that the benefits of digitalization on SCA and SCR are more pronounced in highly dynamic environments.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature by offering an investigation on the role of SCD in influencing SCA, SCR and ultimately SCP in manufacturing firms. It also sheds light on the moderating effect of ED, providing a deeper understanding of the conditions under which digital transformation in supply chains is most beneficial. The study was based on three theoretical foundations: the resource-based view (RBV), the dynamic capabilities theory (DCT) and the contingency theory (CT).

Optimal supply chain design depends on the business context the chain caters for. In this dissertation, we are concerned with attaining and maintaining this alignment between a firm's supply chain portfolio and its business context. Following an introduction in Chapter 1, in Chapter 2 of this dissertation, we analyze the influence of a firm's product types on optimal supply chain design: Academics and practitioners agree that functional products are best delivered via physically efficient supply chains, while innovative products are best delivered via market responsive chains. However, to date, only a few firms have systematically adjusted their supply chain strategies according to this argument. Instead of carrying only one product type, firms deliver a number of both functional and innovative products in parallel complicating the alignment of supply chain portfolios with product portfolios. We address this issue and analyze in detail a firm's optimal supply chain portfolio as a function of its product portfolio. We target the tactical level of decision-making and develop a generic mathematical model to analyze how product portfolios affect the optimal setup of supply chain portfolios. We identify generic problem properties and perform extensive sensitivity analysis to illustrate our findings with numerical examples. Our results indicate that effective supply chain and product portfolio alignment holds the potential for significant cost savings. Because of the large number of factors influencing the optimal set-up, however, profound quantitative analysis is required to exploit the full potential of aligning the supply chain with the product portfolio and to guide implementation. In Chapter 3, we extend our modeling framework and take into account the fact that a firm's products and global business parameters, such as labor rates and transportation costs, evolve over time. Hence, firms need to adapt their supply chain portfolios frequently to stay aligned in the long term. Adapting a well-established supply chain portfolio, however, may involve high costs and expose a firm to unforeseeable risks. We address this issue, differentiating business dynamics into product portfolio dynamics and global business dynamics, and classifying supply chain adaptation into high, medium and low. Building on these classifications, we extend our mathematical model to analyze how much supply chain adaptation a firm actually requires to respond to the business dynamics it faces. Our results indicate that supply chain adaptation may indeed be crucial for a firm to retain its competitiveness. The need for adaptation, however, varies widely across firms: For example, a firm faced with product portfolio commoditization may be required to adapt its entire manufacturing footprint, while a firm with a high product turnover rate may not need to adapt its supply chain portfolio at all. Furthermore, the need for supply chain adaptation is not only determined by the business context in which a firm operates, but can also be manipulated by the firm's product portfolio decisions. Finally, a firm should carefully align its supply chain portfolio with the employed supply chain adaptation strategy to exhaust attainable benefits. In Chapter 4, we widen our scope and develop a step-by-step process to guide sustained alignment between a firm's business context and its supply chain portfolio in practice. Drawing on academic literature, insights from our quantitative models, and extensive interviews with executives from leading firms, we propose and detail four process steps. In the first step we suggest challenging the performance of a firm's current supply chain setup and identifying pressure points to evaluate how acute supply chain realignment is. As a second step we propose and detail a business context analysis to identify what a supply chain lacks and potential areas for realignment. To complement the previous analysis, in a third step, we frame and discuss generic options for long-term supply chain strategy. As a fourth step, we lay out opportunities and pitfalls during the project implementation. We conclude with recommendations on how to stay aligned in the long term. We end the dissertation with a conclusion in Chapter 5.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of triple-A supply chain and marketing strategy alignment on the performance by collecting and analyzing data from the textile industry in Egypt. Design/methodology/approach – A research model is proposed which describes the impact marketing strategy alignment, triple-A supply chain on supply chain performance and organizational performance. The proposed research model and hypotheses were tested using correlation analysis and structural equation modeling based on data collected from 153 companies working in the Egyptian textile industry. Findings – The results of the study support that organizational performance is positively associated supply chain performance. Also supply chain performance is directly affected by triple-A supply chain and marketing strategy alignment. Research limitations/implications – The data used in this study were collected from 153 companies working in the Egyptian textile industry. The generalization of the study results may be limited by the size of the sample. Originality/value – This study provides a useful working model in the textile industry. The results suggest successful implementation of triple-A supply chain and marketing strategy alignment will help in improving the supply chain performance, which in turn improves organizational performance.

Role of flexibility, agility and responsiveness for sustainable supply chain resilience during COVID-19

This research aims to identify factors affecting supply chain agility (SCA) through the lens of financial ratios and evaluate their effect on a company's financial performance. This research involves companies which were listed in the healthcare sector on Bursa Saham Malaysia (BURSA) with at least thirteen years of historical financial reports. The findings reveal that from the four key SCA attributes included in this research, Supply Chain Resilience (SCR) and Planning and Demand Forecast Accuracy (PDFA) are the two attributes that have a significant impact on financial performance, while Supply Chain Flexibility (SCF) and Supplier Collaboration do not have a significant impact. The findings of this research also demonstrate that Supply Chain Agility attributes are numerous, and if the attributes are included to complement one another, they will have a stronger and more significant impact on improving financial performance. However, if companies implement supply chain strategies that only focus on one SCA attribute at a time, the impact may not be as significant as compared to more comprehensive strategies, which complement one another. The healthcare sector can utilize the findings from this research to improve its financial performance. The result does not encourage the sector to be too flexible, as this will increase complexities and hurt its operating costs, instead, it provides a framework for the healthcare sector to develop strategies to be more supply chain resilient and improve its planning and demand forecasting accuracy and balance focus on the supplier’s collaboration.

This study investigated the effect of supply chain resilience on organizational performance, particularly emphasizing supply chain agility, supply chain collaboration, and supply chain robustness. A survey research design was adopted to collect primary data from employees. The target population of this study consisted of 435 employees. Using the Krejcie and Morgan sample size determination table, the sample size obtained for the study was 205 respondents. Data were collected by means of a structured questionnaire, and a total of 200 usable responses were retrieved and used for analysis. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis, and the hypotheses were tested at 5% level of significance. The results revealed that supply chain agility has a positive and statistically significant effect on organizational performance, indicating that the firm's ability to respond quickly and flexibly to changes enhances effectiveness. The findings further showed that supply chain collaboration has a significant influence on the performance of an organization, emphasizing information sharing, coordination, and strategic partnership in a supply chain. Moreover, supply chain robustness was also found to positively impact organizational performance, meaning the ability of the supply chain to absorb and resist disruption would lead to long-term performance. This study concludes that supply chain resilience is one major driver of manufacturing sector firms' performance. In this regard, the study recommends that manufacturing firms should work on strengthening agile practices, developing collaborative supply chain relationships, and investing in robust supply chain structures to attain better performance and improved long-term sustainability.

Purpose This study aims to investigate how social media usage affects operational resilience in supply chains facing disruptions. Specifically, this study explores the role of supply chain agility as a mediator in this relationship. By clarifying how social media enhances agility, which subsequently improves operational resilience, this research provides valuable insights for businesses navigating challenging supply chain environments. Design/methodology/approach Using 281 samples collected from Chinese firms, the regression analysis and the PROCESS macro model are applied to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings The results of this study indicate that firms’ use of social media directly enhances their operational resilience and also indirectly does so by fostering agility. What is particularly noteworthy is that the indirect effect of social media usage on operational performance through agility is more pronounced in disruptive supply chain environments. Originality/value This study contributes to the resilience literature in operations and supply chain management by using clear and robust methodologies, specifically mediation and moderated mediation analyses using the PROCESS macro. This approach reveals how social media usage enhances supply chain agility, which subsequently improves operational resilience during disruptions. By providing empirical evidence for these relationships, this research offers practical insights for firms on how to effectively use social media to navigate supply chain challenges.

This paper provides a review of the literature while contributing to academic understanding of the concepts of agility and flexibility within the supply chain. The research identified 83 peer‐reviewed articles through a structured review technique, which is based on a three‐stage refinement process. Data reduction procedures using codification, sentence strings and a review of keywords, title, abstract and conclusion were used in the search. The papers identified focused on organizational and supply chain agility and flexibility. The acknowledged gaps in understanding and development of agility and flexibility in supply chains were identified and categorized in terms of conceptual, contextual and methodological gaps. Subsequent to the gap analysis, this paper argues that effective relationship integration with key partners is a fundamental mechanism for mitigating the problem of control dissipation, which has hindered academic understanding with respect to development and application of agile and flexible capabilities in supply chains. The findings in this paper will help academics to gain a better understanding and to develop the concepts of supply chain agility and flexibility. In addition, the findings indicate that supply chain stakeholders need to address the issue of relationship integration when undertaking, or participating in agility and flexibility development programmes, so as to maximize supply chain performance. The paper concludes by highlighting implications for managers and researchers, and proposes a number of areas for future investigation.

Purpose This study aims to explore the interplay between supply chain collaboration and disruption and their joint impact on supply chain resilience. It also aims to identify the configurational conditions under which supply chain resilience is achieved, providing a holistic framework for enhancing supply chain management practices amidst disruptions. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to investigate the complex causal mechanisms linking supply chain collaboration and disruption with supply chain resilience. The research integrates three dimensions of collaboration with three dimensions of disruption, offering a comprehensive understanding of supply chain resilience factors. Findings This study reveals that supply chain resilience is not solely dependent on individual elements but is shaped by unique configurations of collaboration and disruption factors. Information sharing emerges as a core factor in high resilience, while the absence of supply and facility disruptions significantly influences resilience outcomes. The research highlights the importance of multiple paths leading to supply chain resilience and the asymmetrical impact of collaboration and disruption. Research limitations/implications The study acknowledges limitations due to data sourced exclusively from China and the use of static data, suggesting the need for cross-temporal and international samples to enhance broader applicability. Future research should consider dynamic temporal changes and diverse theoretical perspectives to comprehensively examine the factors influencing supply chain resilience. Practical implications The research underscores the critical role of information sharing in bolstering supply chain resilience and advises firms to prioritize it in their strategies. It also highlights the importance of mitigating supply and facility disruptions through supplier diversification and robust contingency planning, offering actionable insights for enhancing operational efficiency and risk management in supply chain management. Social implications This research has significant social implications, particularly in the context of global supply chain disruptions. By identifying key factors that enhance supply chain resilience, it can help businesses better prepare for and respond to crises, thereby reducing economic instability and social disruption. Improved resilience can lead to more stable employment, maintain the flow of essential goods and services and contribute to overall societal well-being during times of supply chain stress. Originality/value This study offers original insights by applying fsQCA to explore the multifaceted relationship between supply chain collaboration, disruption and resilience. Its value lies in revealing the complex causal configurations that lead to high or low levels of supply chain resilience, challenging traditional linear perspectives and providing a nuanced understanding that can guide both academic research and practical supply chain management strategies.

PurposeIncreasingly, studies are reporting supply chain analytical capabilities as a key enabler of supply chain agility (SCAG) and supply chain performance (SCP). This study investigates the impact of environmental dynamism and competitive pressures in a supply chain analytics setting, and how intangible supply chain analytical capabilities (ISCAC) moderate the relationship between big data characteristics (BDC's) and SCAG in support of enhanced SCP.Design/methodology/approachThe study draws on the literature on big data, supply chain analytical capabilities, and dynamic capability theory to empirically develop and test a supply chain analytical capabilities model in support of SCAG and SCP. ISCAC was the moderated construct and was tested using two sub-dimensions, supply chain organisational learning and supply chain data driven culture.FindingsThe results show that whilst environmental dynamism has a significant relationship on the three key BDC's, only the volume and velocity dimensions are significant in relation to competitive pressures. Furthermore, only the velocity element of BDC's has a significant positive impact on SCAG. In terms of moderation, the supply chain organisational learning dimension of ISCAC was shown to only moderate the velocity aspect of BDC's on SCAG, whereas for the supply chain data driven culture dimension of ISCAC, only the variety aspect was shown to moderate of BDC on SCAG. SCAG had a significant impact on SCP.Originality/valueThis study adds to the existing knowledge in the supply chain analytical capabilities domain by presenting a nuanced moderation model that includes external factors (environmental dynamism and competitive pressures), their relationships with BDC's and how ISCAC (namely, supply chain organisational learning and supply chain data driven culture) moderates and strengthens aspects of BDC's in support of SCAG and enhanced SCP.
