Objective:To determine the effectiveness of individualized voice therapy in persistent pediatric voice disorders. Methods:Thirty-eight children who were admitted to the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology Shenzhen Hospital, Southern Medical University due to persistent voice disorder from November 2021 to October 2022 were included. All children were evaluated by dynamic laryngoscopy before voice therapy. Two voice doctors performed GRBAS score and acoustic analysis on the children's voice samples to obtain the relevant parameters including F0, Jitter, Shimmer, and MPT; All children were given personalized voice therapy for 8 weeks. Results:Among 38 children with voice disorders, 75.8%（29 cases） were diagnosed with vocal nodules, 20.6%（8 cases） were vocal polyps, and 3.4%（1 case） were vocal cysts. And in all children. And 51.7%（20 cases） had the sign of supraglottic extrusion under dynamic laryngoscopy. GRBAS scores decreased from 1.93 ± 0.62, 1.82 ± 0.55, 0.98 ± 0.54, 0.65 ± 0.48, 1.05 ± 0.52 to 0.62 ± 0.60, 0.58 ± 0.53, 0.32 ± 0.40, 0.22 ± 0.36, 0.37 ± 0.36. F0, Jitter, Shimmer decreased from（243.11±39.73） Hz, （0.85±0.99）%, （9.96±3.78）% to（225.43±43.20） Hz, （0.33±0.57）%, （7.72±4.32）%, respectively MPT was prolonged from（5.82±2.30） s to（7.87±3.21） s after treatment. All parameters changes had statistical significance. Conclusion:Voice therapy can solve children's voice problems, improve their voice quality and effectively treat children's voice disorders.

Speaker's Comfort in Teaching Environments: Voice Problems in Swedish Teaching Staff

Voice disorder is a multifactorial impairment. Several studies have shown that there is a direct relationship between voice problems and voice-related jobs. Therefore, professional voice users, including teachers, are at high risk of voice disorders, which threatens the employment positions. Also, the investigation of voice impairments among faculty members seems essential. The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of voice disorders in faculty members, its impact on the physical, emotional, and functional status of this job group, with and without voice disorders, and the correlation of voice disorders with some risk factors. Methods The participants of this study were 114 university teaching faculty members of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, with a mean age of 43.95±0.98 years. The current cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study used a demographic questionnaire and Voice Handicap Index (VHI) as the data collection instruments. In the present study, based on VHI test results, participants with a total VHI score greater than 14.5 are considered to have voice disorders. Results The prevalence of voice disorders among university teaching faculty members was 27.19%. There was a significant correlation between allergy and voice disorders (P= 0.04). Significant differences were also found between the two study groups in terms of the total score of the VHI and its subscales (P <0.001). Conclusions Considering the 27.19% prevalence of voice disorders among university teaching faculty members and its effect on the total VHI score, our results confirm that education, prevention, and treatment programs are critical to lessen the frequency of voice disorders related to teaching. However, it has been found that this job group with voice disorders is four times more likely to have allergies than those without voice disorder, which indicates the importance of controlling this problem.

Validation of the Japanese Version of the Singing Voice Handicap Index

Objectives:When a person speaks, voice problems usually include pain or discomfort and/or difficulties in terms of the pitch, the loudness and the quality of the voice. When patients with voice problems induced by stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and systemic diseases involving the voice are examined, generally, of the Four Diagnoses (四診), a Diagnosis of Hearing can be used in current Korean medicine. The effects of acupuncture and herb medicine on voice problems have been reported for over 20 years. However, when it comes to improvements, objective and subjective evaluation methods need to be explained.Methods:Subjective methods for evaluating voice were studied through a literature search of old medicinal books containing Korean medicine diagnostics, and an objective evaluation method using Praat software is presented.Results:Korean medicine doctors analyze the patient’s voice in clinical settings unconsciously on a daily basis. However, most voice diagnoses depend on the doctor’s subjective evaluation. Voice qualities can be evaluated by using the Eight Principles (八綱), including Yin-Yang; the Five Elements (Phases); the Grade, Roughness, Breathy, Asthenic, Strained (GRBAS) score, and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) as subjective methods, and an acoustic analysis using the Praat program can be used as an objective method.Conclusion:A more complete voice examination can be achieved by using subjective and objective methods at the same time. For an objective explanation and management of patient’s voice problems or systemic disorders, an objective method should be used in Korean medicine, which already has many subjective diagnostic methods. More research needs to be conducted, and more clinical evidence needs to be collected in the future.

Voice problems as side effects of inhaled corticosteroids in asthma patients—a prevalence study

Overview: Working music theater singers (MTS) typically have a heavy vocal load and little is known about their perception of vocal function. The Evaluation of the Ability to Sing Easily (EASE) was used to assess professional MTS' perceptions of current singing voice status and to compare scores across demographic and performance characteristics and to evaluate the construct validity of the EASE and its subscales (VF = Vocal Fatigue, PRI = Pathologic-Risk Indicators). Methods: Professional MTS (n = 284) completed an online survey including the EASE and two additional Vocal Concern (VC) items. Scores were compared across age, gender, whether currently working, role, perceived vocal load over the past 24 h and self-reported voice problem. Results: For the whole cohort, statistically significant differences were found on all subscales according to whether or not singers perceived themselves to have a voice problem (p < 0.001). Currently performing singers were significantly different from those not performing in a show on the EASE Total (p = 0.014) and VF (p = 0.002), but not for PRI and VC. In the currently performing singer group, significant differences were found for gender, role and perceived voice problem on the EASE Total and all subscales (p < 0.01). Significantly higher VF scores were recorded for singers with heavy vocal load (p = 0.01), but there were no differences on the EASE Total (p = 0.57), PRI (p = 0.19) or VC subscales (p = 0.53). Among these performing singers, no significant age differences were found for any EASE subscales. Conclusions: These findings provide further validation of the EASE as a useful tool for measuring singers' perceptions of vocal function and suggest that the subscales should be scored separately. Future evaluation of the EASE against objective clinical assessments (e.g., videostroboscopy) is recommended. © 2014 S. Karger AG, Basel

Subjective and perceptual analysis of voice quality and relationship with neurological disfunction in multiple sclerosis patients

Background: An actor is a profession that requires both good vocal range and a quality voice simultaneously. In their workplace, they utilize their voices, which poses a risk of vocal issues such as overuse, potentially leading to voice problems. Persistent voice problems can endanger their professional career. Objectives: Discovering whether there is a correlation between the duration of voice usage and vocal issues among theater actors at the Theater Studio in the Surakarta City Area. Methods: Based on the type of data, this research is a quantitative study and is cross-sectional type. The sampling technique used in this research is purposive sampling with a sample size of 50 respondents. The statistical test employed is the Spearman’s Rank test. Results: The results of the correlation analysis using Spearman's Rank test indicate that the p-value is 0.188 or &gt;0.05. It can be interpreted as accepting H₀ and rejecting Ha, indicating no relationship between the duration of voice use and voice problems in theater actors at the Theater Workshop in the Surakarta City area. Furthermore, the correlation strength (-0.189) is weak with a negative correlation direction, suggesting that the longer the duration of voice use, the smaller the value of voice problems. Conclusion: There is no correlation between the duration of voice usage and voice problems among theater actors at the Theater Studio in the Surakarta City Area. Long-Term Efficacy of Voice Therapy in Patients With Voice Problems After Treatment of Early Glottic Cancer

IntroductionThe purpose was to determine the incidence of voice disorders in a group of professional actors and singers, to compare the two groups, and to investigate the potential causes of their voice problems.Methods65 actors and 63 singers from professional theatres and choirs were included. The data concerning voice problems, their possible causes, and factors adversely affecting voice quality were obtained through a questionnaire. The results were compared between the groups of professional singers and actors, and between the subgroups of singers and actors both with and without frequent voice problems.ResultsThe incidence of frequent voice problems over the entire career in singers and actors was lower than reported in the literature. Professional actors displayed more inappropriate life and vocal habits than the singers. Significant risk factors for voice disorders in singers turned out to be loud speech (p=0.029) and the presence of allergies or asthma (p=0.048). No such significant risk factors were found in actors.ConslusionThe study confirmed the importance of preventive examination of the vocal tract function before enrolling in studies for an elite voice user. Professional singers and especially actors demonstrated insufficient knowledge of proper voice care. The results suggest that elite voice users require additional information on voice hygiene and occasional professional help from college to the end of career. Speech and language therapists can play a crucial role in such voice care in order to effectively prevent voice problems in elite voice users.

To translate and adapt the original Singing Voice Handicap Index (SVHI) for the Polish population and to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Polish SVHI version, such as internal consistency, reliability and construct validity in different groups of dysphonic singers. Prospective case-control study. Patients treated at a single institute. Sixty singers with voice disorders and 57 healthy singers completed the SVHI and the Voice Handicap Index (VHI). Thirty singers completed the SVHI twice within a 2- to 4-week interval. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, discriminant validity, criterion-related validity RESULTS: A strong Cronbach's alpha coefficient (0.96) indicates that the SVHI items are measuring the same construct. Evaluating the test-retest reliability, the r-Spearman correlation coefficient was r = 0.797 for the total score of SVHI, which shows a good level of reproducibility. There were significant differences between the control group (CG) and patients with benign vocal fold lesions (P < 0.001), CG and singers with muscle tension dysphonia (P < 0.001), CG and coexistence of muscle tension dysphonia and chronic laryngitis (P < 0.001). There was a positive statistically significant correlation between SVHI and VHI (r = 0.753, P = 0.000*). The Polish version of SVHI serves as a valid health status instrument, as well as discriminating between singers with voice disorders and singers without voice problems. The SVHI is easy to perform in clinical practice.
