Water pollution and protection of water resources have become an urgent task for humanity today and are also important components of environmental risk assessment. In response to the problems of high risk level and low risk credibility in the current environmental health risk assessment of urban water sources, this article aims to use fuzzy set theory to comprehensively evaluate the environmental quality and quickly monitor the safety of urban water sources. Therefore, this article analyzed the health factors of the urban water source environment and then studied the content and uncertainty analysis of health risk assessment. Finally, it constructed a health risk assessment system and proposed corresponding water environment protection strategies. In the experimental section, the risk level and risk credibility of the water environment were analyzed. Through comparison, it was found that the risk level in the new water environment health risk assessment was 0.16 lower than that in the traditional water environment health risk assessment, and the risk credibility was 0.11 higher than that in the traditional water environment health risk assessment. The water quality monitoring effect in the new water environment health risk assessment was 7.3% higher than that in the traditional water environment health risk assessment, The health hazard effect is 8.2% lower than traditional water environment health risk assessment. In summary, water environment health risk assessment plays an important role in protecting the water source environment. Health risk assessment of the water environment helps to reduce water pollution, improve water quality, and ultimately improve human health. Moreover, using fuzzy set theory makes it easier to comprehensively and efficiently evaluate the water environment. The innovation of this article lies in paying attention to the importance of fuzzy set theory in water pollution risk assessment and applying fuzzy technology to water pollution control strategies, to better improve water quality and optimize water source environmental health risk assessment methods.

Environmental quality is fundamental for the well being of human life. Environmental risk assessment and analysis have a crucial role for guaranteeing the safety of the population, especially in intensive urbanized and industrialized areas, such as the Campania region (Italy). In Italy, after the Legislative Decree 152/2006, the environmental risk assessment has become mandatory for contaminated lands such as brownfields and dismantled industrial activities. Despite the importance and fragility of the soil, it is rarely taken into account as a resource to be preserved. Moreover, due to the heterogeneity of many variables involved in the process, the environmental and human health risk assessments are used at the scale of a site, while the regional evaluation is very difficult, and keeps the administration sceptical in taking it into account for land planning and decision-making processes. During the last years, some international methodologies for ecological and human health risk assessment have been developed by national environmental agencies in many industrialized countries. An idea recently took place regarding the protection of soils: the monitoring of soil should be limited only to risk areas, as opposed to monitoring systems covering the entire territory. Focusing monitoring in selected areas would help to define priorities, increase efficiency of monitoring activities and reduce the monitoring costs. This is the reason why many methodologies for preliminary and simplified risk assessment of (potentially) contaminated sites, for the prioritization and planning of soil remediation and protection programmes, were developed. The only lack that these methodologies have is the absence of the spatial analysis. The aim of this research was to implement the human health risk assessment. For the purposes of the study we used 3535 topsoil samples, collected across the whole regional territory. The concentrations of 53 elements have been determined at Bureau Veritas Analytical Lab. Ltd (Vancouver, Canada), by means of an Aqua Regia extraction followed by a combination of ICP-MS and ICP-AES methods. After the statistical and cartographic elaboration of these regional dataset, we integrated one of the model of relative risk assessment for single contaminated sites with spatial analysis procedures. In order to support the spatial assessment of contaminated sites at the regional scale, the most suitable tool is the Geographic Information System (GIS). A new approach was applied, in order to assess/rank environmental risk by using geospatial analysis in a GIS platform to adapt a European-wide accepted methodology for the preliminary assessment of human health risks at single contaminated sites to a regional scale. The developed regional risk assessment methodology can be used by the regional administrations to select at regional level the or priority areas. The identification of the problem areas is necessary for developing an efficient monitoring system and to produce a ranking of the risky areas to be used as a reference in determining the development of intervention plans, for better addressing the resources dedicated to the environmental remediation of widely contaminated regions. The methodology chosen as a reference for the risk assessment procedures is the PRA.MS (Preliminary risk assessment model for the identification of problem areas for soil contamination in Europe, 2005). Following the PRA.MS guidelines, a conceptual model for the human health risk assessment for the Campania region has been based on four different exposure routes: 1) dispersion of contaminants in groundwater, 2) dispersion in surface water, 3) dispersion in air, 4) direct contact with the contaminated media (soils). The source, the pathway and the receptor for each of the exposure route are scored on the base of a quantitative or qualitative analysis of some featuring characteristics (parameters). A total of 14 representative parameters were chosen, basing on the available regional data for Campania. Starting from these parameters values, the information is aggregated to higher levels in several steps, adopting a mixed additive and multiplicative algorithm, up to the overall risk score. The final risk map is classified according four classes of risk. This map was useful to identify the problem areas, characterized by a higher risk, where more detailed analysis had to be carried out. The identified area was located in a wide territory in the center of Campania region, between Avellino and Salerno municipalities, an high populated zone, where intensive agricultural and industrial activities are well developed. A high density survey has been carried out in this priority area; the concentrations of 53 elements have been measured on 102 new topsoil samples, followed by statistic and cartographic elaboration of the 15 potentially toxic elements (Sb, As, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, Sn, Tl, V, Zn) for which the Italian legislation (D.Lgs. 152/06) established the trigger and action limits, by defining the contamination threshold values (CSC) for the amount of metals in topsoils or waters. The new methodology of GIS-based human health risk assessment has been again applied, in order to select sites of particular significance in terms of danger for the resident population. Some small areas characterized by high risk have been identified. New in situ measurements and classic follow up risk assessment should be here carried out to confirm if remediation actions are needed to guaranteeing the safety of the population. Other works has been contemporaneously elaborated during the PhD. Six months have been spent at the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), where a work on a humus samples dataset have been carried out, under the supervision of Dr. Timo Tarvainen. Moreover a new Geochemical Atlas will be completed based on inorganic elements and organic compounds concentrations in marine sediments samples, collected in the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno.

Introduction. Environmental safety assessment for selecting the optimal technology of building materials manufacture is quite relevant. The necessity of environmental assessment (environmental safety assessment) of each life cycle stage of any building material (from the purchase of raw materials or the manufacture of products out of natural resources to the disposal of products) has been distinguished as a scientific problem for the present research, alongside, the authors have supplemented the schematic diagram of a building material life cycle with the transportation stage (of raw materials, finished products). The object of the study is a notional building material, and the purpose of the study is assessment of the stress imposed on the environment components by each life cycle stage of a notional building material. This work should foster implementation of more environmentally safe technology of building materials manufacture.Materials and Methods. The authors examined the interrelation between the properties of materials and the quality of the environment using the methods of comparative and system analysis, the graph method and the qualimetric method. Results. As a result of the conducted research, the potential impacts of a notional building material on the environment at all life cycle stages have been analysed — from purchase of raw materials, manufacture and use of products till their processing at the end of service life, recycling and final disposal (the cycle “from cradle to grave”). The authors proposed to take into account the stages of transportation of raw materials and finished products within the building materials life cycle to make a more accurate assessment of their impact on the environment. This approach allows taking into account the entire life cycle and applying the data to solving the environmental problems, such as reducing the amount of emissions, discharges and wastes, thus, fostering saving the resources.Discussion and Conclusions. The environmental assessment of a building material life cycle, should, first of all, take into account the share of its negative impact in the aggravation of the global environmental problems, including global warming, ozone destruction in the stratospheric layer of the atmosphere, formation of ozone in the tropospheric layer, oxidation of water resources and soils, eutrophication of water bodies, depletion of non-renewable energy sources (oil, gas, coal). The carried out analysis allows the authors to conclude that significant differences in the degree of negative impact of the notional building materials on the environment components are observed at the stage of their manufacture.

An integrated environmental risk assessment and management framework for enhancing the sustainability of marine protected areas: The Cape d'Aguilar Marine Reserve case study in Hong Kong

The present agrochemical safety evaluation paradigm is long‐standing and anchored in well‐established testing and evaluation procedures. However, it does not meet the present‐day challenges of rapidly growing populations, food insecurity, and pressures from climate change. To transform the current framework and apply modern evaluation strategies that better support sustainable agriculture, the Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI) assembled a technical committee to reframe the safety evaluation of crop‐protection products. The committee is composed of international experts from regulatory agencies, academia, industry and nongovernmental organizations. Their mission is to establish a framework that supports the development of fit‐for‐purpose agrochemical safety evaluation that is applicable to changing global, as well as local needs and regulatory decisions, and incorporates relevant evolving science. This will be accomplished through the integration of state‐of‐the‐art scientific methods, technologies and data sources, to inform safety and risk decisions, and adapt them to evolving local and global needs. The project team will use a systems‐thinking approach to develop the tools that will implement a problem formulation and exposure driven approach to create sustainable, safe and effective crop protection products, and reduce, replace and refine animal studies with fit‐for‐purpose assays. A new approach necessarily will integrate the most modern tools and latest advances in chemical testing methods to guarantee the robust human and environmental safety and risk assessment of agrochemicals. This article summarizes the challenges associated with the modernization of agrochemical safety evaluation, proposes a potential roadmap, and seeks input and engagement from the broader community to advance this effort. © 2022 Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI). As a civil nuclear facility combining the organic innovation of marine engineering and nuclear engineering, the Floating Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) is significantly different from the existing land-based fixed Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) because of the particularity of its shipborne platform and marine operating environment, although it has the general nuclear characteristics of the Small Modular Reactor (SMR). The existing national nuclear safety regulations and regulatory requirements are mainly based on onshore NPPs, so the applicability for the environmental safety assessment of the FNPP is limited. In this paper, through the study of the FNPP on the applicability of environmental safety supervision regulations and assessment requirements, the marine environmental characteristics and site suitability, the feasibility of radioactive waste treatment and discharge, the rationality of environmental monitoring scheme and implementation, the accident consequences and risk controllability, and the key technical issues of the marine environmental safety assessment of the FNPP are proposed, which can provide references for the environmental safety research and supervision of the FNPP.

This review describes the current status and future challenges of risk assessment and regulation of plants modified by modern biotechniques, namely genetic engineering and genome editing. It provides a general overview of the biosafety and regulation of genetically modified plants and details different regulatory frameworks with a focus on the European situation. The environmental risk and safety assessment of genetically modified plants is explained, and aspects of toxicological assessments are discussed, especially the controversial debate in Europe on the added scientific value of untargeted animal feeding studies. Because RNA interference (RNAi) is increasingly explored for commercial applications, the risk and safety assessment of RNAi-based genetically modified plants is also elucidated. The production, detection, and identification of genome-edited plants are described. Recent applications of modern biotechniques, namely synthetic biology and gene drives, are discussed, and a short outlook on the future follows.

Chemical industry parks in China are considered high-risk areas because they present numerous risks that can damage the environment, such as pollution incidents. In order to identify the environmental risks and the principal risk factors in these areas, we have developed a simple physical model of a regional environmental risk field (ERF) using existing dispersal patterns and migration models. The regional ERF zoning was also conducted and a reference value for diagnostic methods was developed to determine risk-acceptable, risk-warning, and risk-mitigation zones, which can provide a risk source layout for chemical industry parks. In accordance with the environmental risk control requirements, this study focused on the three stages of control and management of environmental risk and established an environmental risk management system including risk source identification and assessment, environmental safety planning, early risk warning, emergency management, assessment of environmental effects, and environmental remediation of pollution accidents. By using this model, the environmental risks in Tianjin Binhai New Area, the largest chemical industry park in China, were assessed and the environmental risk zoning map was drawn, which suggested the existence of many unacceptable environmental risks in this area. Thus, relevant suggestions have been proposed from the perspective of the adjustment of risk source layout, intensified management of environmental risk control and so on.

To abate the environmental impact on the mineral exploitation, one of the most important means is to assess the environmental impact of mineral resources planning. The ultimate objective of plan environmental impact assessment is to ensure that assessing conclusions and environmental consequences are combined into strategic decision-making process. Planning environmental impact assessment is the only type of strategic environmental assessment that is required to be conducted in plans by Chinese Environmental Impact Assessment Act. Mineral resources planning have just issued in China, and are still on the exploratory stage. Those studies are mainly focused on improving the evaluation system, exploring the evaluation methods and so on. Quantitative analysis of environmental effects and processing of spatial information are the most difficult procedures which have no generalized evaluation approaches at present. The commonly applicable methods falls into several catalogues in previous studies of environmental impact assessment on mineral resources planning. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP), multi-objective analysis and expert judgment method are often used to select assessment indicators. Those methods can be applied to identify, forecast, and analyze potential environment impact when mineral resource planning is brought into effect. However, it is difficult to evaluate the impact of the changes of mineral development structure for their deficiencies in processing of the regional spatial information and synthetic analysis of multiple attribute information. The deficient methodologies have become a restriction to the actual impacts evaluation of mineral resources planning.According to the current situation of environment impact assessment for mineral resources planning, this paper proposes the quantitative assessment method for environmental impact of mineral resources planning based on GIS. The present situation of environmental evaluation process in the study area is established firstly, mainly includes: the division of evaluation unit, the establishment of evaluation index and evaluation classification, and the selection of evaluation model. Using the above indicators and models, large scale of quantitative evaluation for the present situation of environment in the study area is presented. Based on the results of the study area mineral resources planning large-scale comprehensive quantitative assessment, the identification and selection of environmental impact factors are introduced, the model and system for environmental assessment is set up in this research. In this paper, taking the environmental assessment of mineral resources planning in Shanxi Province as example, the approach is introduced in detail. Through spatial analysis methods provided by the GIS technology, the environmental impact of mineral resources planning to ecological environment, water environment, geological environment and atmospheric environment are given quantitatively. Based on the results of the environmental assessment of mineral resources planning in Shanxi Province, some valuable suggestions are proposed in this research. The example shows that the GIS are a very efficient and practical method for environmental assessment of mineral resources planning. Chapter 1 - Sustainability and environmental impacts of the nuclear industry

Environmental Risk Assessment familiarizes readers with risk assessment for the main environmental systems that are surveyed: soil, water, and air. The text aims to enable learners to develop knowledge and awareness about environmental risk management and take action to transform society into a sustainable one. The eight edited chapters start with an introduction to the subject and an outline of good practices in risk assessment. The latter half presents a risk-based approach to the environment and provides a deep dive into risk management implementation for contaminated sites, monitoring air quality, evaluating drinking water for safety, and risk analysis in waste management. Concepts are explained in a simple manner with references included for further reading. This book is an essential guideline for students who require knowledge in the environmental engineering programs or related course modules.
