Food industry and engineering—Quo vadis?
The study of university entrants’ motivation in choosing a specialty does not lose relevance, because social changes at the state and global levels have the greatest impact on young people, on the formation of their attitude to themselves and their future professional activities. The purpose of the article is to determine the motivational factors for choosing a specialty by freshmen of technical specialties at Lutsk National Technical University. For the study, the following research methods were used: theoretical - analysis of psychological-pedagogical and scientific-methodical literature - to identify the state of the researched problem; empirical methods - surveys, mathematical processing of results. A sociological survey was conducted for the first-year students majoring in 181 - Food Technology, 192 - Construction and Civil Engineering, and 208 - Agricultural Engineering at Lutsk National Technical University; the results were processed statistically. The analysis of value determinants showed that among the motives for choosing the specialty are both internal, personal reasons, caused by the desire for professional self-affirmation, and external reasons, related to financial factors or the desire to avoid military service. The most significant factors that motivated to obtain higher technical education in the chosen specialty, according to the surveyed students, are interest in the profession and its prestige, as well as the prepositions to profession. Factors such as the desire to engage in scientific activities and the desire to change the place of residence had the least motivating effect. We can state that first-year students do not see prospects in the development of their scientific career in the future. Most factors do not differ significantly in gender. However, for female students, the desire to change their place of residence is more important than for male; for later the personal factor is more important due to the possibility of receiving a delay for a military service. Based on the study, the purposeful pedagogical influence on the future professionals was implemented, focusing on the motivational component of professional competence. Recommendations for improving career guidance work have been developed.

Rupture force was found to be negatively correlated with moisture content and loading rate. Conclusion: The effect of moisture content on all dependent parameters was found to be significant (α=0.05) under Tukey pair wise test but these were non-significant for the varieties of cotton seeds considered under the study. These engineering properties can be considered while designing of planters and other sowing machinery, harvesters, ginning, and oil extraction machines of cotton seed.
Read moreEffect of rice straw ash on soil properties and yield of cucumber

Many farmers in Nigeria are paying close attention to using Rice Straw Ash (RSA) as a soil fertility enhancement additive. The short and long-term effects of applying this ash to the soil quality were not adequately investigated, however. This research was conducted at the Departmental Farm of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, Bayero University, Kano to access the impact of RSA on the soil’s physiochemical properties and on cucumber yield. Twelve (12) experimental plots were treated with different amounts of RSA (0 Kg, 1 Kg, 2 Kg and 3 Kg) to assess the intensity effect of the treatment on both soil physiochemicals and crop yield. For each experimental plot, soil properties (moisture content, porosity, bulk density, electrical conductivity, organic matter, pH and sodium concentration, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium) were measured and analyzed before and after the experiment. The results showed that the application of ash increased moisture content, bulk density, porosity, electrical conductivity, organic matter and sodium concentration while reducing the pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium levels. The mean yield in 0 Kg RSA (21,84tons / ha) was found to be the highest. There was a drop in the yield (13.08-14.14tons / ha) of crop in the plots treated with RSA. The research concluded that continued use of RSA could lead to a reduction in crop yield as the EC level was found to be rising. It is on this basis that farmers are advised to avoid the use of RSA as an additive for soil fertility enhancement and other means should therefore be used.

The article presents the results of preliminary research connected with the students’ experience of high education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this paper is to introduce the meaning of this experience for the students’ future professional activities with early years education pupils. The quantitative online survey was conducted with 110 participants: pedagogy master degree students. The original online questionnaire was sent individually to each participant. The survey was based on a sample of university students who were fairly homogeneous in socio-demographic determinants, e.g. sex and age, thus, the advanced statistical analyzes could not be done. According to the data collected from closed questions, the results were presented in a form of tables. The data from the open-ended questions were subjected to a comprehensive qualitative analysis, as a result, the specific categories of answers were identified. The conclusions show clearly that the participants divide their study experience during the COVID-19 pandemic into positive and negative. There is a slight predominance of the negative experience. What is crucial, the participants consider these experiences as significant for their future profession and the process of working with a child and its family. The conducted research shows that further analysis of this experience, both by students and academic staff is essential for the study of the teachers’ socio-emotional competences. There can be no doubt about the value of such competences in supporting a child in its development.
Read moreA Review of Terminology Pertaining to Darcy's Law and Flow through Porous Media
Flow through porous media is usually governed by Darcy's Law. This law is typically taught as part of programs in civil, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, and agricultural engineering. Soil scientists also use Darcy's Law extensively. Unfortunately, this well-known law is not taught with much consistency, even within a single program such as an undergraduate degree in civil engineering. After presenting examples that illustrate the high degree of variability that now exists with respect to the manner of presentation, it is argued that the nomenclature and terminology associated with Darcy's Law could be greatly reduced and simplified.
Read moreModeling the process of adaptation of first-year students to the study of chemistry
Aim. The purpose of the study is to develop a model of the system of adaptation of students to study at a university (using the example of the discipline “Chemistry”), based on the results of a sociological survey of students of Omsk State Technical University using the methodology of functionally oriented modeling.Methodology and methods. In the course of the research, theoretical methods were used – analysis of sources on the subject of the project, elements of mathematical and statistical processing of experimental data, as well as empirical methods – conducting a sociological survey and expert assessment. To develop a model of the system of adaptation of students to study at a university (using the example of the discipline “Chemistry”), the methodology of functionally oriented modeling was used.Results. The problems associated with the development of a university chemistry course by students and their connection with the peculiarities of preparing for the Unified State Exam are revealed based on the analysis of the results of a sociological survey in which 172 respondents took part. Taking into account the data of empirical research and the opinion of experts, a thematic plan for an introductory chemistry course for university students has been developed. A model of the system of adaptation of students to study at a university (using the example of the discipline "Chemistry") by means of functional modeling is constructed.Theoretical and/or practical significance. The theoretical significance of the research consists in the development of a system of adaptation of students to study at a university (on the example of the discipline “Chemistry”) based on the results of a sociological survey and expert assessment. The research problem is caused by the objective need to resolve the contradiction between the requirements of the university chemistry course and the low level of training of the majority of OmSTU students studying this discipline. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the application of the methodology of functionally oriented modeling in the development of a model for students' adaptation to higher education in the discipline of Chemistry. The practical significance of the study is determined by the possibility of replicating the developed model, which includes an introductory university chemistry course to eliminate knowledge gaps among students with unsatisfactory results, which are revealed during the initial diagnosis, taking into account the thematic planning proposed by the authors in the training of highly qualified personnel.Conclusions. The experience of implementing the proposed model for two years at OmSTU allows us to conclude about its effectiveness and can be used to solve similar problems in other universities of the Russian Federation not only in teaching chemistry, but also in other disciplines such as, for example, physics or computer science.
