Objective To explore the therapeutic effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) combined with Huatan Quyu decoction (HTQYD) on acute cerebral infarction.Methods In accordance with different treatment methods,126 patients with acute cerebral infarction were divided into 3 groups.The control group (40 cases) received routine treatment,the Chinese herbal medicine group (42 cases) received routine treatment plus HTQYD.The comprehensive HBO and combined treatment group (44 cases) was given HBO therapy plus HTQYD,for a succession of 10 days.Neurofunctional deficiency scores (NDS),traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome scores of the patients in all the groups were determined before and after treatment.At the same time,levels of tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA),plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) and homocysteine (HCY) in the plasma were detected before and after treatment.Results TCM syndrome scores both in the Chinese herbal medicine grouo and the comprehensive HBO and conhined treatment group all improved significantly,when compared with those before treatment (P ＜ 0.01).No statistical significance could be noted in the FENG syndromes,when comparisons were made between the data obtained before and after treatment(P ＞0.05).However,statistical significance could be seen in the TAN and YU syndromes(P ＜ 0.01 、P ＜ 0.05).Significant improvement in the neurofunctional deficiency scores could be observed in all the 3 groups following treatment,(P ＜ 0.01).The comprehensive HBO and combined treatment group was obviously superior to the control group (P ＜ 0.05),nevertheless,no statistical significance could be seen,when comparisons were made between the groups (P ＞ 0.05).For the patients in the Chinese herbal medicine group and the comprehensive HBO and combined treatment group,plasma t-PA [(3.03 ±2.15)mg/L,(13.86±1.37)mg/L],PAI [(23.64 ±9.07)mg/L,(23.02 ±5.25)mg/L] and HCY [(10.13 ± 1.15) umol/L,(10.01 ± 1.15) μmol/L] all improved significantly after treatment (P ＜ 0.05或 ＜ 0.01),with the data of PAI and HCY being obviously superior to those of the control group(P ＜ 0.05).For the patients in the comprehensive HBO and combined treatment group,PAI data decreased more significantly with statistical significance,when compared with those of the Chinese herbal medicine group(P ＜0.05).Linear regression analysis in the data of 126 patients indicated that the TAN changes obtained both before treatment and after treatment were positively correlated with the changes of plasma PAI both before treatment and after treatment (r =0.781,P =0.01).Conclusions HBO combined with Huatan Quyu decoction could elevate the level of t-PA,decreaselevels of PAI and HCY and significantly improve neurofunctional deficiency of the patients with acute cerebral infarction.Improvement of the TAN syndromes was of great importance to the decreased level of plasma PAI. Introduction According to the Swiss Health Survey 2007, 1.7% of the adult population use traditional Chinese medicine (including Chinese herbal medicine, but excluding acupuncture). In contrast to conventional drugs, that contain single chemically defined substances, prescriptions of Chinese herbs are mixtures of up to 40 ingredients (parts of plants, fungi, animal substances and minerals). Originally they were taken in the form of decoctions, but nowadays granules are more popular. Medium daily dosages of granules range between 8 to 12g. In a recent work we identified the most commonly used Chinese herbs (all ingredients are referred to as herbs for reasons of simplicity) and classical formulas (mixtures). Here we present a short overview and the example of suan zao ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), which is used in the treatment of insomnia and anxiety and contains saponins that have been shown to increase sleep in animal studies. Material and Methods A random sample of 1,053 prescriptions was drawn from the database of Lian Chinaherb AG, Switzerland, and analysed according to the most frequently used individual herbs and classical formulas. Cluster analysis (Jaccard similarity coefficient, complete linkage method) was applied to identify common combinations of herbs. Results The most frequently used herbs were dang gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), fu ling (Poria), bai shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and gan cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma); the most frequently used classical formulas were gui pi tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) and xiao yao san (Rambling Powder). The average number of herbs per prescription was 12.0, and the average daily dosage of granules was 8.7g. 74.3% of the prescriptions were for female, 24.8% for male patients. Suan zao ren was present in 14.2% of all prescriptions. These prescriptions contained on average 13.7 herbs, and the daily dosage of granules was 8.9g. Suan zao ren was more frequently prescribed by practitioners of non-Asian than of Asian origin but equally often for female and male patients. Cluster analysis grouped suan zao ren with yuan zhi (Polygalae Radix), bai zi ren (Platycladi Semen), sheng di huang (Rehmanniae Radix) and dan shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Discussion Prescriptions including suan zao ren contained on average slightly more herbs than other prescriptions. This might be due to the fact that two of the three most popular classical formulas with suan zao ren are composed of 13 and 12 herbs with the possibility of adding more ingredients when necessary. Cluster analysis resulted in the clustering of suan zao ren with other herbs of the classical formula tian wang bu xin dan (Emperor of Heaven’s Special Pill to Tonify the Heart), indicating the use of suan zao ren for the treatment of insomnia and irritability. Unfortunately, the diagnoses of the patients were unavailable and thus correlations between use of suan zao ren and diseases could not be analysed.

This article discussed the origin and development of the traditional Chinese medicine Shiyan processing, processing history and overview of modern researches. The content of ancient Shiyan processing was summarized in order to provide standardization for further studies on the optimal processing method of Shiyan, and to ensure the quality of the pieces, and the clinical curative effect. Recently, herbal medicine including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has gained huge attention in the world. In 2015, the global trades of herbal medicine reached 93.15 billion US dollars. And, the latest statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of People's Republic of China showed that total sales of Chinese patent medicine and raw herbs reached 120 billion US dollars in 2014. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the situation of international marketing on herbal medicine and how much TCM shared in it. The PubMed database, search engines and government websites and research reports were searched for analyses. The results showed that total trades of TCM products in both domestic and foreign markets, were about 135 billion US dollars, including Chinese patent medicine, raw herbs, herbal extracts, herbal health care products, whose proportion of the global marketing was 80%. Stroke is a condition with high morbidity and mortality, and 75% of stroke survivors lose their ability to work. Stroke is a burden to the family and society. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese herbal patent medicines in the treatment of patients after the acute phase of a stroke. We searched the following databases through August 2016: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI), China Science Periodical Database (CSPD), and China Biology Medicine disc (CBMdisc) for studies that evaluated Chinese herbal patent medicines for post stroke recovery. A random-effect model was used to pool therapeutic effects of Chinese herbal patent medicines on stroke recovery. Network meta-analysis was used to rank the treatment for each Chinese herbal patent medicine. In our meta-analysis, we evaluated 28 trials that included 2780 patients. Chinese herbal patent medicines were effective in promoting recovery after stroke (OR, 3.03; 95% CI: 2.53-3.64; P < .001). Chinese herbal patent medicines significantly improved neurological function defect scores when compared with the controls (standard mean difference [SMD], -0.89; 95% CI, -1.44 to -0.35; P = .001). Chinese herbal patent medicines significantly improved the Barthel index (SMD, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.53-0.94; P < .001) and the Fugl-Meyer assessment scores (SMD, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.34-0.86; P < .001). In the network analysis, MLC601, Shuxuetong, and BuchangNaoxintong were most likely to improve stroke recovery in patients without acupuncture. Additionally, Mailuoning, Xuesaitong, BuchangNaoxintong were the patented Chinese herbal medicines most likely to improve stroke recovery when combined with acupuncture. Our research suggests that the Chinese herbal patent medicines were effective for stroke recovery. The most effective treatments for stroke recovery were MLC601, Shuxuetong, and BuchangNaoxintong. However, to clarify the specific effective ingredients of Chinese herbal medicines, a well-designed study is warranted.

Aim of the Study:The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Chinese herbal medicine is beneficial for survival improvement in patients with multiple myeloma.Materials and Methods:We performed a 1:1 propensity score–matched cohort study to analyze patients with multiple myeloma diagnosed between January 1, 2002, and December 31, 2012, through the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients who received Chinese herbal medicine therapy from the initial date of diagnosis of multiple myeloma to December 31, 2012, were included in the Chinese herbal medicine group. Patients who were not treated with Chinese herbal medicine during the same interval were categorized in the non-Chinese herbal medicine group. A Cox regression model was used to adjust for sex, age, comorbidities, and drug use. Hazard ratios were also compared between the 2 groups.Results:A total of 312 patients were identified after 1:1 propensity score matching. The patients had similar basic characteristics. A better survival status was found in the Chinese herbal medicine cohort (log-rank test, P < .0001). Finally, 49 patients in the Chinese herbal medicine cohort and 96 patients in the non-Chinese herbal medicine cohort died (adjusted hazard ratio = 0.35, 95% confidence interval = 0.24-0.51). The effect of survival improvement from Chinese herbal medicine in patients with multiple myeloma could be observed when prescriptions had the duration of ≥30 days.Conclusions:Our results showed that patients with multiple myeloma could benefit from Chinese herbal medicine treatment, which could improve the survival rate in Taiwan. The findings offer important ideas for further study.

This study summarized and analyzed the current acne-relieving Chinese medicinal health products and Chinese patent medicines,aiming at providing references for the formulation and development of acne-relieving health products. The information on acne-relieving health products published by the Department of Special Food Safety Supervision and Management,the State Administration for Market Regulation( SAMR) was retrieved,and the Chinese patent medicines on DRUGDATAEXPY were searched. Microsoft Excel and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance Support System V2. 5( TCMISS) were employed to statistically analyze the characteristics of formulations. Forty-three acne-relieving health products were obtained,including 40 ones containing Chinese herbal medicines. Six Chinese herbal medicines showed a usage frequency ≥8,with 61 times in use totally,including Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma( 13),Lonicerae Japonicae Flos( 12),Taraxaci Herba( 11),ALOE( 9),Carthami Flos( 8),and Rhei Radix et Rhizoma( 8). A total of 29 Chinese patent medicines with similar efficacy were collected in DRUGDATAEXPY. Nine Chinese herbal medicines showed a usage frequency ≥6,with 63 times in use,including Rhei Radix et Rhizoma( 10),Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma( 8),Scutellariae Radix( 8),Lonicerae Japonicae Flos( 7),Angelicae Sinensis Radix( 6),Paeoniae Radix Rubra( 6),Astragali Radix( 6),Paeoniae Radix Alba( 6),and Gardeniae Fructus( 6). Through unsupervised hierarchical entropy-based clustering of the above-mentioned Chinese medicinal health products and Chinese patent medicines,five and three new formulas were obtained,respectively. The selection of Chinese herbal medicines was consistent with the principles of traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) theories in relieving acne,i. e.,dispelling exterior wind,ventilating lungs,clearing heat,dissipating mass,promoting diuresis,relaxing bowels,removing toxin,activating blood,resolving stasis,eliminating phlegm,and regulating Qi. According to the &quot; lung governing skin and body hair&quot; and &quot; interior-exterior relationship between lung and large intestine&quot; in TCM theories,the idea that acne could be treated by relieving constipation was proposed,which provided new methods and references for the research and development of Chinese medicinal health products.

Objective To observe the clinical effect of Chinese medicine acupoint sticking at Shenque and Yongquan in adjuvant treatment of pregnancy resistance. Methods From January 2015 to January 2018, 210 patients with preeclampsia were selected in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Pinghu. According to the random number table method, the patients were divided into control group(n=105) and observation group (n=105). The control group was treated with routine infusions. In the observation group, Shenque Yongquan two-acupoint traditional Chinese medicine was applied as an adjuvant therapy on the basis of the control group. The treatment effects of the two groups after 5 days and 10 days treatment were observed, and the disappearance rate of the main symptoms and the recurrence rate within 2 weeks after treatment were observed. Results The total effective rates of the observation group after treatment for 5 days and treatment for 10 days were 68.57%(72/105) and 98.10%(103/105), respectively, which were significantly higher than those of the control group [51.43%(54/105) and 71.43%(75/105)], the differences were statistically significant(χ2=6.429, 28.905, all P<0.05). The disappearance rates of vomiting, dizziness and burnout in the observation group were 50.48%, 44.57% and 34.12%, respectively, which were significantly lower than those in the control group (70.48%, 71.28% and 80.90%)(χ2=8.786, 13.624, 39.071, all P<0.05). The recurrence rate of the observation group (2.86%) with in 2 weeks was significantly lower than 22.86% of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(χ2=18.743, P<0.05). Conclusion Shenque Yongquan two-acupoint Chinese traditional medicine sticking combined with conventional infusion therapy has significant clinical effect in the treatment of pregnancy resistance. Objective To evaluate the effect of Chinese herbal medicine immunomodulator on T lymphocyte immune function in peripheral blood and intestinal mucosa of immature rats with obstructive jaundice. Methods Three-weeks Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups. (n= 12, in each): normal control group, sham operation group, obstructive jaundice (OJ) group, OJ + Chinese herbal medicine immunomodulator (OJ+ZY) group. Except for the normal control group, the others' bile duct stones were ligatured to establish rat models with obstructive jaundice. The percentage of CD4+ and CD8+ tlymphocytes and the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ in peripheral blood and intestinal mucosa of immature rats was detected by flow cytometry. Results The percentage of CD4+ cell [(36.2 ±4.2)%, (28.8±1.8)% respectively] and the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ [(1.14±0.39), (1.37±0.34)respectively] in OJ group were lower than those in normal control group [peripheral blood: CD4+(41.5±5.3)%,CD4+/CD8+(1.37±0.19); intestinal mucosa: CD4+(32.3± 2.4)%, CD4+/CD8+ (1.84+0.28) and sham operation group (peripheral blood: CD4+ (41.2±5.5)%, CD4+/CD8+ (1.45±0.27); intestinal mucosa: CD4+(31.5 ± 2.7)%, CD4+/CD8+ (1.63±0.58)] . The difference was statistical significant(P<0.05). The percentage of CD4+ cell [(42.7±6.3)%, (33.6±2.4)% respectively] and the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ [(1.56±0.46), (1.84±0.56)respectively] in OJ+ZY group, were higher than those in OJ group(P<0.05). The difference was statistical significant(P<0.05). Conclusion Chinese herbal medicine immunomodulator can increase T lymphocyte immune function in immature rats with obstructive jaundice, but has no significance in normal control group as well as sham operation group. Chinese herbal medicine is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). With developing of traditional Chinese medicine, the usage of Chinese herbal medicine is growing rapidly. It is essential to identify Chinese herbal medicine correctly since Chinese herbal medicine is used to treat disease. However, identifying Chinese herbal medicine is a hard task because lots of Chinese herbal medicine with different properties displays similar appearance, such as Radix StephaniaeTetrandrae and Radix Paeoniae Alba. Traditional methods of classifying Chinese herbal medicine are low-efficiency and rely on professional medical knowledge. Machine learning methods can reduce the need for professional knowledge in some fields due to its self-learning ability. In this study, a framework, called CNN & BLS, combining the convolutional neural network (CNN) with broad learning system (BLS) for identifying the Chinese herbal medicine, is proposed. Experimental results show the CNN & BLS displays the promising performance for identifying Chinese herbal medicine.
